VE11Description
The increase in the number of rural routes led to a decrease in the number of small post offices. In 1901, the Post Office Department operated the largest number of post offices in American history, 75,945. The next year, there were 1,000 fewer post offices, and the number continued to decline.
Between 1792 and 1918, the Post Office Department opened post offices in 27 towns and villages in Jefferson County. By 2020, only nine remained. The post office in a town often moved from one store or home to another over the years. The post offices pictured in this exhibit were located in a number of different buildings over the years and this exhibit only shows a selection of the buildings.
