Description

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. "The Crossroads of History." From Maryland Heights, high above the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tunnel is one of the most beautiful views in all America. Here in 1747, Robert Harper began a ferry that carried settlers moving into the Shenandoah Valley. In October 1859, the abolitionist John Brown raided the arsenal and was captured by Col. Robert E. Lee. In September 1862, 12,693 Union troops surrendered to Confederate forces. Today, the "lower town" is being restored by the U.S. National Park Service. Over 1 million tourists annually enjoy Harpers Ferry's quiet southern hospitality. Many hikers walk the C. & O. Canal towpath and the Appalachian Trail which cross here.
