Famous Jefferson County Court House, Charles Town, W. Va. Sign for Miler's Meat Market at Charles Washington Hall. It was in this court house on December 2, 1869 that John Brown was sentenced to be hanged for his treasonous raid on the Engine House at Harper's Ferry 8 miles distant. Jefferson County was named for Thomas Jefferson and was formed for Berkeley County in 1801. In early colonial times, Jefferson County was part of a vast territory, which spread North & East from the Williamsburg seat of government in Virginia.
