Four record books from the county Poor Farm or Almshouse near Leetown, WV:
(1) 1872-1886: Green marbled cover. Account book, pages are numbered, printed in blue in upper corners; pages 1-11 have tabs with pre-printed alphabetical notations. Lists of produce and livestock raised at Poor Farm and use of each, lists of purchases, moneys paid out, receipts, sales, work done, and lists of bills presented to and passed by the Board of Commissioners. The last page was torn out.
(2) 1872-1930: Green marbled cover. Handwritten on first page: "Almshouse Record 1872". Names written on page are E. S. Avis, James M. Hiedwold. Notation handwritten on second page: "Names of persons remaining in the Almshouse on the 27th day of March 1872. At the time turned over by Chas. G. Littleton to John Avis and recipients after." After the name of each person listed is further information regarding age, particulars of admission, whether the person died and the date or whether the person left of his/her own accord and the date, etc. Also included is a Physician's Report; list of crops and notes on the gardens; list of births; 1930 lists of "men white", "men colored", "White women", and "Colored women" compiled by Daisy D. Fritts Matron Infirmary; lists of deaths; and lists of hogs bought and hogs killed. Some pages missing, either torn or cut out.
(3) 1881-1899 ("County Infirmary May 1881 Agent's Book" on cover): cloth-covered hard binding. Pages are numbered, printed in blue in upper corners. Pages 1-4, pages 23-26, and pages 147-160 are missing. Remaining pages are lists of persons admitted in the county infirmary with columns for the individual's age, sex, and race; lists of expenditures and receipts; lists of grains and other crops produced; lists of births and deaths (and where buried). Lists of people generally were segregated by sex and by race.
(4) 1886-1894: Leather bound with a gilt "A" on spine. Marbled flyleaves; Wm. F. Murphy's Sons Stationers label pasted inside front cover. Contents of this ledger listed by Doug Perks:
