Scope and Content

Twenty envelopes, each stamped in black: "THE CIVIL WAR STATION / THE VETERANS MEMORIAL / 1861 - jUNE 29, 1995 - 1865 / HARPERS FERRY, WV 25424", and each envelope has one of the twenty 32 cent postal stamps issued. Subjects of the postal stamps include Shiloh, "Stonewall" Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Mary Chestnut, Gettysburg, Clara Barton, Frederick Douglass, and other Civil War subjects. Each envelope was signed by Stan Hadden. According to historian, Doug Perks, Stan Hadden was a self-taught artist in Harpers Ferry, who may have designed the cancellation stamp of the Veterans Memorial (that stands in front of Harpers Ferry Middle School).
