Description

Framed electrotype of Frederick William Mackey Holliday. He is seated with right sleeve in pocket and left hand in lap. Right leg is crossed over left. In elaborate gold colored frame. Governor Holliday was born in Winchester, Va. He received a law degree from the University of Virginia, was elected Commonwealth's Attorney for Winchester and Frederick counties, a position held until the start of the Civil War. He entered the war under the command of Gen. Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson rapidly, by promotion became colonel of the 33rd Virginia Regiment. He lost his arm at the battle of Cedar Run (Slaughgter's Mountain). In 1878 he became 35th governor of Virginia. He died in Winchester in 1899.
