Scope and Content

Collection of legal, financial, and personal letters, envelopes, postcards, and other papers related to the McDonald/Beckwith family. Date approximately from the 1870s to the early 1900s. Names include Beckwith, MacKie, McDonald, Moore, and Tucker. Many of the papers relate to law practices of Judge James Francis "Frank" Beckwith in Charles Town, W. Va. and Major Angus William McDonald, Jr., in Berryville, Va. and Charles Town, W. Va. In the 1880s, Beckwith merged his Charles Town practice with McDonald's Berryville practice. Major Angus William McDonald, Jr. [1829-1914] married Elizabeth Morton Sherrard [1833-1892]. Their daughter, Annie Leacy McDonald [1858-1925], married Judge James Francis "Frank" Beckwith [1848-1937]. They had four children: Angus McDonald Beckwith [1887-1906], Eloise Lloyd Beckwith [1889-1985], Francis Jennings Beckwith [1892-1966], and Elizabeth Morton Beckwith [1895-1970]. Eloise Lloyd Beckwith married John Randolph Tucker [1884-1945]. Elizabeth Morton Beckwith married Paul Thruston MacKie [1893-1960]. (Papers need further processing.)
