ARC1007Scope and Content
A leather-bound ledger found at the Reynolds family's home, Glen Allen, in Clarke County, Va., in 2020 or 2021. "M. E. Osburn" is written twice on the inside front cover. Most of the ledger consists of lined pages on which nothing is written.
The ledger was apparently used for at least three purposes:
1) 17 pages--to record entries dated between 1872 and 1875 concerning the monies received of Logan Osburn, Jr. (II), Deputy Sheriff of Jefferson County, related primarily to court executions
2) 117 pages--to record recipes, primarily for preparing foods, for household tasks, and for home remedies; the date "August 14th 1878" appears on a list of names of recipes written on two pages preceding page 1 of the copied recipes. Most of the recipes are written in the same hand. That handwriting is similar to the handwriting of the person who wrote "M. E. Osburn" on the inside front cover. It is probable that Mary Emily Castleman Osburn (wife of Logan Osburn, Jr.) wrote "M. E. Osburn" on the inside front cover and also wrote the recipes. On many of the recipes is the name of the person from whom the recipe was obtained.
3) Two pages--to record sales of eggs to people living in the Kabletown area*-March to September 1881; to record sales from creamery-no year dates
The book may have been used for other purposes as there are areas where remnants of pages with handwriting remain after most of the pages had been torn out.
*Logan (II) and Mary Emily Castleman Osburn and their children lived in the Kabletown area of Jefferson County at Avondale. Other members of the large Osburn family lived nearby.Acquisition
