Description

John Brown, after being tried and convicted of treason against the commonwealth of Virginia, was taken from Charles Town, Virginia Jail, December 2, 1859, in this wagon, seated upon his own coffin therein, to the place of his execution of South Samuel Street. The wagon was drawn by two white horses. It was preceded by Sheriff J. W. Campbell, Jailor John Avis and George W. Sadler, all on foot. It was flanked by three companies of infantry. After the execution the coffin, containing the body of John Brown, was taken in this wagon to the B&O Station in Charlestown, for shipment to the place of burial in North Elba, New York.
