Description

Home of Gen. Charles Lee- The village of Leetown, West Virginia, is thirteen miles from Martinsburg, nine from Shepherdstown, and six from Charles Town. Here Lee built "Prota Rio", the right half of the house above, and used chalklines for partitions. He was an eccentric bachelor, and was an English-born soldier of fortune. He was second in command during the early stages of the Revolutionary War, but was dismissed from the American Army for insubordination at Monmouth. His will, on record in Martinsburg, is unique in its biting sarcasm. It request that his body not be buried near a Presbyterian or Anabaptist church.
