Powhatan College/St. Hilda's Hall. The original building was constructed by the Charlestown Mining, Manufacturing, and Improvement Company as the Hotel Powhatan which opened in the summer of 1892. When the CTMMI Company went bankrupt the building was sold. In 1900 Powhatan Female College opened in the old hotel building under the direction of Dr. Stewart P. Hatton. Powhatan closed in 1914. In September 1915 St. Hilda's Hall began operation under the leadership of Principal Maria Pendleton DuVal, formerly principal of Stuart's Hall. St. Hilda's Hall closed in 1931. Hotel Powhatan/Powhatan College/St. Hilda's Hall was completely destroyed by fire in December 1937. In 1948 the Charles Town General Hospital was built on a portion of that site.
