C&O Canal Harpers Ferry, West Virginia The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which parallels the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, MD., played an important role in the Civil War. It was used by the North to haul coal from the west to the east. Pictured is a section of the canal across the river from Harpers Ferry.
