"Rock Hall Christmas, 1900. Rock Hall burned in 1906 or 1907. Located near Summit Point. Was George Washington's Bullskin Plantation. It was sold out of his estate in 1819."
[copied from original in 1975]
NOTE: Rock Hall was built in 1837 by Thomas Hite Willis on the first farm land in Jefferson County purchased by George Washington. In 1750 Washington purchased the 550 acre tract from Robert Rutherford and surveyed it himself. Although Washington referred to the property as his Bullskin farm, it was known as Rock Hall when it was purchased in 1818 by Lawrence Lewis. Thomas Hite Willis acquired the property in 1830 from Matthew Ranson. Rock Hall was destroyed by fire in 1906.
