Back view of Charles Town Hospital (Knott Nursing Home) from alley.
On verso: "Recent view of the southeast corner of the Knott Nursing Home showing the back of the old house, with its porches, nestled under the 1911 addition of a third floor and the taller structure at the right. The huge operating room window now is shaded by the wide overhang of the roof. Mrs. Gilliam recalls that the top of this window originally slanted back into the roof, providing the surgeon with the light so needed before electric illumination. It must be assumed that a roll down cover was provided for the summer. The patch in the metal roof above the window confirms this memory."
