Scope and Content

Black pocket size diary with pages written on in pencil. Diary chronicling the journey of Benjamin Hoffman and other members of the Charles Town Mining Company from Charles Town to California in 1849 during the Gold Rush. Diary includes events of the journey, tribes encountered, geographic features passed, supplies purchased and traded for with company funds, members of the company who made the journey, names of those who died on the way there, and more. Archive also includes a typed transcription of the journal.
