Certificate of Incorporation of the Southern Soldiers Memorial Association of Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, West Virginia, dated May 17, 1899, "for the purpose of collecting into a burial ground the bodies of CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS killed during the late CIVIL WAR and caring for their graves and perpetuating the memory of their heroic deeds. . .". Original incorporators were Joseph McMurran, James M. Hendricks, W. L. Arthur, J. Will Taylor, and J. W. B. Frazier. Embossed red seal of the Jefferson County Clerk is in lower left corner. Signed by W. F. Alexander, Clerk of the Jefferson County Court.
The Southern Soldiers Memorial Association was the precursor to the Sons of Confederate Veterans of Shepherdstown, WV.
