[" The scene shows Roger Preston Chew leaving his home The Hermitage near Charlestown, VA, in early April 1861, as a volunteer for military services with the Confederate Army. He was a second lieutenant...eventually to rise to the rank of liet. Col., Horse Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia. This early 20th century romantic re-creation depicts his farewell to his family and his house servants. The artist, Gilbert Gaul (1855-1919) b. New Jersey, career New York. He was a pupil of J. G. Brown; a member of the National Academy, New York. He was famed for his military art, often recreating battle scenes and events, especially from the Civil War."Acquisition
