Collection of papers related to Shannondale Springs:
Folder 1 (Advertising Materials):
(1) Bifold brochure on goldenrod paper. Has reproduction of engraving of river, trees and hills. At top "Shannondale Springs Water Has Health Building Properties CONSIDER YOUR HEALTH". Price was $1 for 5 gallons. (old # 752).
(2) Bifold pamphlet on buff colored paper titled "CAMP POETRY Composed at SHANNONDALE and read JULY 30th, 1888.". Poem printed inside titled A 'POME.' ". 2 pages. (old # 754; other cat. # 1780).
(3) Bifold pamphlet entitled "COLONIAL COUNTRY CLUB", Colonial Country Club at Shannondale Springs. (old # 36A).
(4) Bifold pamphlet entitled "Shannondale Springs. / Jefferson County, West Va.", contains testimonials from "prominent physicians of Charles Town": J.D. Starry, G.F. Mason, C.F. Fouke, Frank Byington, and C.T. Richardson. c1894
(5) Handbill entitled "Shannondale Springs". Rates were $2 per day, $8 per week, $30 per month. At bottom "I. S. CRAWFORD, / P. O. Charles Town, Jeff. Co., W.Va. Proprietor." (old # 778; other cat. # 1814; other # 41).
(6) 3 copies of a handbill entitled "Analysis of Shannondale Springs Water / (Made by the Celebrated Dr. De Butts of Baltimore, Md., in 1821, and Verified by West Virginia Experimental Sta- / tion in 1904.)"; "Write, phone, or wire to H. C. Getzendanner, / Charles Town, W. Va." (one copy has old cat. # 1810; and other # 40).
(7) Photocopy of 16 page pamphlet entitled "SHANNONDALE: The Quality and Character of its Waters, and Their Effects upon Various Diseases. Charlestown: 1838. Printed at the Free Press Office". (old # 21). Accompanied by 3-hole punch sheet of onionskin paper with typewritten notes. (old # JC-0-44).
Folder 2 (Printing Accounts):
(1) Sale bill, handwritten in brown ink on blue paper: "Shannondale Company To Virginia Free Press Office". Total of bill for printing was $70.89. Dated on reverse "3rd May 1852". Embossed in upper corner. (old # 773; other # 37).
(2) Sale bill, handwritten in ink: "Shannondale Springs Company / To Virginia Free Press". Oct. 1842 to July 16, 1846", total was $74.25". Embossed in upper corner. (old # 38).
(3) June 1853 to September 1856 handwritten account of H.S. Gallaher to G.W. Sappington (old # 1808 and #775).
Folder 3 (Correspondence, 1800s):
(1) Note handwritten in brown ink on lined blue paper to "Dear Miss Osburn". Signed "James Barbour Shannondale 25 July 1851". (old #767; other # 1794).
(2) Typewritten transcription (on reverse of United States Post Office letterhead): "The following invitation was loaned to me in the original by: Ms. W. E. Gordon, Gerrardstown, WVa. / SHANNONDALE / The pleasure of your company is respectfully invited to spend the day at Shannondale on Tuesday the 30th instant." and followed by a list of names and was addressed to Miss Sarah Morgan. (old # 22).
(3) Note handwritten in ink, addressed to Miss Osborne from Emma Southworth, dated May 31, 1859. (old cat. # 1801).
(4) Fragment of poem handwritten on pale pink paper; author unknown. (old cat. # 1798).
Folder 4 (Correspondence, 1900s): miscellaneous correspondence, mainly addressed to Thornton Perry; dated from 1938 to 1954. Includes (a.) a document in several languages. Front page in German "INTERNATIONALER BADERKONGRESS DEUTSCHLAND 1938". It is an invitation to and description of the International Spa Congress held in Berlin and Bad Nauheim in 1938 and (b) the envelope to the Spa Committee, from Berlin, April 8, 1938. (old # 776; other # 1811). Also includes empty envelope addressed to Mrs. M.S.R. Moler.
Folder 5 (Bushrod Washington note)
1843 IOU signed by Bushrod Washington, President of Shannondale Springs Company, for $130.00.
Folder 6 (Shannondale Sale Bill)
2 copies of handbill advertising the sale of Shannondale Springs Farms by H.C. Getzendanner. Pencilled on reverse of one copy: "Give to / Thornton Perry -". (same copy: old cat. # 774; other # 1808; other # 39).
Folder 7 (Shannondale Springs checks):
(1) Bound book of checks for Shannondale Springs from the bank of the Valley of Virginia. Several stubs have "B. C. Washington". This is Bushrod Corbin Washington who lived at Claymont Court. (old # 780; other # 1816; other # 35).
(2) Separate page of checks that was torn from the above book and folded into small envelope with # 44 pencilled in upper left corner.
Folder 8 (Miscellaneous):
(1) Farmers Advocate newspaper article (partial page) regarding sale of Shannondale pursuant to circuit court decree. Undated, c1930. (other # 42).
(2) Empty envelope, handwritten in ink along one edge: "Shannondale Springs, Virginia / Chinaware Designed by / Charles Burton - Pink"; handwritten along opposite edge: Copied By Fitzpatrick Studios Feb 19, 1946".
(3) Partial paper with pencilled and inked scribbles. Pencilled along top edge: "Mr. Perry, / Martinsburg Operator # 3." Some of the handwriting may be that of Thornton Perry.
(4) Small sheet of paper with handwritten notes in blue ink regarding an article about Shannondale Springs that appeared in The Hillbilly and the Farmers Repository. Note signed by "TTPerry".
(5) Small sheet of paper with typewritten note regarding President James K. Polk visiting Shannondale Springs.
Folder 9 (Research materials - copies):
(1) Copy of newspaper article titled "Shannondale Springs Bathhouse Restoration Completed; National Register 'Next Stop' ". Photo shows 7 adults and one child standing in front of bathhouse. (old # 1806; other # 772). Undated, probably taken from Spirit of Jefferson.
(2) Copy of newspaper article entitled "Items of Local Historic Value Obtained at Perry Auction". Cut from Nov. 4, 1999 edition of Spirit of Jefferson.
