Description

Zion Episcopal Church (Congress Street, between Mildred and Church Street). The present church was dedicated in 1851, a replica of one built and burned earlier. The steeple was added in 1891. The graveyard, a National Historic Landmark, is the burial place of many 18th century settlers, Revolutionary soldiers, and Washington family members; there are more Washingtons buried in this graveyard than in any other place in the country. During the Civil War, Union troops were quartered in Zion Church. The stone wall was built by John Yates Beall, a Confederate spy, who was hanged in New York and buried near the north entrance. Near the west entrance is an epitaph written by Francis Scott Key on the flat gravestone of his friend, Mrs. Mary Ann Morsell. Sketches made by Betty Davis. Information compiled by Wanda Perry.
