Stribling House (417 E. Washington Street). Dr. Taliaferro Stribling commissioned the construction of this house in 1839. When Thomas Rutherford purchased it in 1858, he paid only $800 for the two-story brick house and the adjacent lots which comprise the block between church and Seminary streets. During the Civil War, Union General Grant took the house for his headquarters. It was here that Generals Grant and Sheridan met to plan the Valley Campaign.
