Mordington or Happy Retreat. Framed.
Information taped to back of picture says: " 1839-1926, The late home of Charles Washington, brother of General George Washington and founder of Charles Town, VA, 1786. Now West Virginia, built by the owner about the Revolutionary War period and called by him Happy Retreat. This picture shows the north end of the West Wing of the house. It is probably better known today as Mordington. Notice the vine covered wall and the bronze tablet over the window; this room was occupied by Charles C. Conklyn, the last survivor of the company of Jefferson Guards, and of that Military Special Detail of six men selected to guard John Brown during his trial and execution in Charles Town, Virginia, 1859. "Happy Retreat, home of the late Charles Washington, Founder of Charles Town, Jeff. Co., W. Va - (Then 1786 - was Berkeley County, Virginia) Notice the bronze table on the N.E. Corner of the wall (the left hand side of the picture) in memorium of the builder, marking the room in which he died, now partly covered with vines. C. M and J. P. Conklyn bought "Happy Retreat" in August of 1920 from the Mitchel Estate and lived there 25 years to August 1945, then sold the place to Mr. R. J. Funkhouser in 1945."Acquisition
