Scope and Content

Two books, a silhouette of Elizabeth Stackhouse, and a family record: (1) Red-bound book embossed with the name of Susan B. Compton and containing many handwritten poems and extracts of writings. Her book contains many entries of place names in this area, e.g., Martinsburg, Frederick, Williamsport, Greencastle. Many of the entries are dated in the 1820s and 1830s. Inserted in this book is a separate paper with a handwritten list of names, a poem entitled "The Conquered Banner", and a strip of red velvet. (2) A silhouette of a woman with a scrap of black fabric. Handwritten on the back of the silhouette is "Elizabeth Stackhouse Elizabeth City, New Jersey 1819". According to "Distinguishing Real from Fake Peale's Museum Silhouettes" by Anne Verplanck, in Antiques and Fine Arts Magazine (see Media file), this may be an original Charles Willson Peale Museum silhouette. The silhouette originally was in Susan Compton's book. (3) Red-bound book embossed with the name of William T. Compton and containing many handwritten poems and extracts of writings. Inserted in this book is an envelope addressed to Gerard Moore, Charlestown, Jeff Co, W. Va, and a postcard from an Aglionby in England addressed to Mrs(?). M. M. Moore, Charles Town, Jefferson Co., West Virginia, United States. (4) Paper entitled "Family Record" and containing handwritten entries of the Compton family births, deaths, and marriages from 1762 through 1841.
