Documents collected by Museum historian Doug Perks from his personal life and from sales of local materials. The Skyline Terrace menu comes from Perks's time working there as a young man.

Thoroughbred flat racing got underway at Charles Town in December 1933. The Shenandoah Jockey Club built the first thoroughbred racetrack on the old Charles Town Horse Show grounds.The Skyline Terrace offered upscale dining overlooking the finish line in the track’s Club House.

Citizens Fire Insurance Co. blotter
The Citizens Fire Insurance Company, organized in 1906, was located in the Citizens Building, 108 East Washington Street present-day location of the Bank of Charles Town’s Trust Department. The company was one of several enterprises directed by Roger Preston Chew.
1948 Moore Insurance & Realty Co. calendar:
Organized in 1896 by Thomas Rutherford Moore, the Moore Insurance Agency started in
Hunter’s Law Building, now the location of Charles Town’s City Hall. They moved next door to the Citizens Building in 1907 where they remained until 1948 when they moved to the first floor of the St. Margaret’s Building on North George Street. The “We’re Moving” postcard is an announcement of this move.
D.S. Hughes cigar receipt c. 1898:
Daniel Sommers Hughes was a prominent Charles Town merchant. His cigar shop was located at present-day 306 West Washington Street.
WM Kahn clothing receipt for c. 1890:
Clothier William Kahn had his shop in the Sadler Building (present-day 103-113 West
Washington Street) in the 1890s. The invoice to John Porterfield is Kahn’s 3rd installment
payment for shares in the Charlestown Mining, Manufacturing, & Improvement Company. John Porterfield was the company’s Treasurer.
Letter concerning stock in Charles Town Mining & Manufacturing Co., c. 1893:
Written by Margaret Ellen “Maggie” Warwick Lockridge, Driscol (AKA Minnehaha
Springs), Pocahontas County, WV to S. Lee Phillips on September 5, 1893. Phillips was the Secretary of the Charlestown Mining, Manufacturing & Improvement Company. The company experienced financial difficulty during the Panic of 1893 and sold its office building and hotel but continued to sell real estate in present-day Ranson. In the letter Lockridge is questioning the sale of her stock in the company as well as her purchase of town lots.Acquisition
