Description

Book of sheet music compiled from many published sources. Each compilation from a publisher has a cover page. The first compilation begins on page 5, suggesting that the first few pages are missing from the book. Publication dates range from 1844 to 1859. The book of sheet music belonged to Frances L. "Fanny" Macoughtry, the daughter of Dr. William Orr and Elizabeth M. Macoughtry. The Macoughtry family lived in the vicinity of Smithfield. Six pages in from the front of the book is a poem typed on a 4" x 10" yellow piece of paper glued to the page. The poem is titled "Air--Dixie Land" and is about Virginia during the Civil War. William Willis Blackford, a 1st Lieutenant in the Confederate army, composed and dedicated the poem to the Washington Mounted Rifles. Blackford presented the poem to Fanny L. Macoughtry on July 11, 1861. Handwritten in pen is "Presented by the Author to Fanny L. Macoughtry July 11th 1861....... Wm Blackford was at Smithfield on 11th July 1861 acting as a Lieutenant of a "Picket Guard" of Horsemen= He & his men & company belong to Col. Steuarts [sic] cavalry, whose quarters were then at Bunker's Hill--since then with [?] Johnson's Army marched over the Ridge to "the Junction" and shared in the glorious victory on Bull's Run on 21st July 1861=Col. Steuarts [sic] cavalry among the number. August 6, 1861" More information is attached in Media. Physical Description: Hardback cover, 10 1/2" x 14" x 1 3/4". "Fannie L. Macoughtry" is engraved on front cover page. "Music" in engraved along spine. Pencil marks and writing are on a few pages.
