Includes biographical information on Herbert and a transcription of a letter he sent December 27, 1850, to his aunt and foster mother, Mrs. Jane Washington at Blakeley in Jefferson County. In 1849 Herbert joined the Charlestown Mining Company to go to the California gold fields. The letter concerned some of his experiences there.
Both the author and Noblet Herbert were descendants of John Augustine Washington, George Washington's brother.
