Here atop Maryland Heights on April 18, 1861 one could have looked down on Harpers Ferry and witnessed the Arsenal set afire by retreating Federal Troops. The Shenandoah River on the left emptied into the Potomac below. Upper right is the famed old Hotel and Restaurant, Hilltop House.
