Scope and Content
A quartermaster's report of Capt. William Kearney's militia company (most likely completed after spring drills--two drills required annually); marked "A Return of Capt. William Kearney's Company of Malitia (sic) of the 1st Battalion 55 Regiment for the 21st of May 1796." The company was part of the Virginia Line - required militia service akin to the "Minute Man" concept or the National guard. Berkeley Co. (1796) was the 55th regiment. After formation of Jefferson County, Jefferson became the 55th regiment; return lists officers, other men, inventory of weapons, and fines assessed.
