Harpers FerryContext
Daniel Cooke Hatcher (c. 1837–1912) of Middleburg, Virginia, was a member of Turner Ashby’s Mountain Rangers. In 1859, this photograph was taken of Hatcher– 21 years old at the time–when he and the Rangers were among the Virginia forces called to Charles Town to guard against possible disturbances during Brown’s trial. The Rangers were present at Brown’s execution on December 2. Hatcher later enlisted at Harpers Ferry in April 1861 as a private in Company A of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, the regiment into which the Mountain Rangers were incorporated. He rose through the ranks to become a major before the end of the Civil War and later represented Loudoun and Fauquier counties in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1895 to 1899.Acquisition
