After a period of painting for a Los Angeles sign company and stage sets for theaters, in 1934 George Demont Otis moved to Kentfield, north of San Francisco. From this hub he traveled extensively around the state, painting landscapes. He particularly enjoyed painting trees silhouetted against the sky and creeks, as seen in this painting, which depicts an area west of Mount Tamalpais.
