This collection provides a unique perspective on the history of the island of Kaho'olawe. The history of the early inhabitants is represented through artifacts and soil samples, extensive site data and field notes, photographs and slides, and reports about on-site scientific observations and sample analysis. The history
of Kaho' olawe in the latter half of the 20th century is illustrated by written federal agency justifications of use of the island for military bombing and bombardment, federal environmental impact statements and condition reports, and testimony and reports by scientists, researchers, and activists. Most of the
documents and artifacts were collected or generated by the subcontractors engaged by the federal and/or state government and the U.S. Navy, and the activities and perspectives of these government agencies are those most clearly articulated in this collection, as is the archaeological and scientific evidence uncovered during surveys and studies.Collection
