He gave me a gold ring and a pearl necklace. In the Palace there was a really big giant. His breath smelled of rotten egg, fruit and vegetables. My necklace made me invisible and my ring made me hide. Piya Sengupta As you know a giant's day hardly ever ends and as it happens it was one of those days when that kind of thing happens. Murray Hartley I have had my surprise dinner party and my name is Matilda and I am in my bed and I am going to go to sleep now and I am going to dream that the B.F.G. takes me to Giantland and I nearly got eaten up by a very, very, very, very , very , very, very, very enormous and gigantic G-giant. Melanie Guy I was lying in my bed one night when I felt something tighting round me. I opened my mouth ,to scream but I couldn't make a sound. I started to tingle all over. My body felt as if it was made of water. It was a vampire bat. He picked me up, Teddy and all. Soon I knew we were flying. The vampire was not at all nice to look at. He was black against the sky. This evening we have three very distinguished guests: Professor Barty, who specializes in the skeleton, Professor Neal who specializes in movement and Professor Bootwala who specializes in teeth. Later in the show we will have some lighter entertainment with a cartoon, "The Bojabi Tree." Now here's Professor Barty". Then I showed the two Professors on. After the play I could breathe again. Ian Wojtowicz Yesterday it was our play and I was a Professor with Adam and Hozefa and I felt very excited and ordinary all the time. I had to talk about movement, Adam had to talk about bones that protect other things like the lungs and nerves and Hozefa had to talk about teeth. I had to plug in Sarah who was a skeleton and I had to say "Stop .... " then I had to unplug her to make her stop and all the people laughed. I would like to introduce three pro fessors who are our guests for today. Professor Barty, Pro fessor Neal and Professor Bootwala. They will tell you their latest experiments on the skeleton, movement and teeth. And later on we will have some cartoon fun with the "Bojabi Tree". So let's welcome Professor Barty. Barty: Thankyou ladies and gentle men and good evening. Lets begin with the two facts that your skeleton holds your body up and protects the inner parts of you which need to be protected. For example, the skull at the top of the human skeleton pro tects the brain which is inside the skull (but it's not there now) and the spine at the back which is made up of very little bits of bone and that protects your main ner vous system and the pelvis round the hip protects the bladder, bowels and in testinal tubes. I was Professor Barty. I enjoyed it a lot but the audience laughed and I felt offended. Adam Barty On Wednesday it was our assembly and I was very nervous and I felt very shaky and now I am writing about it I feel very shaky. I was the skelton I had to do very jerky movements. When we were getting ready Miss Waugh stuck the bones on the skeleton. So at last it was time to go into the hall, we had no time to do the whole rehearsal but we did the beginning. Then the bell rang. I felt blank and then I felt like lightening had struck me and then I felt like not wanting to do the play but now I want to do it again. Sarah Rolfe - • • First in the classroom, we got changed and everyone went into the hall and then we started. The Announcer announced Professor Barty, Professor Neal, and Professor Bootwala. Then he said "Well thankyou Professor Neal, and lastly Professor Bootwala" , and Professor Bootwala said, "Hello ladies and gentlemen, I'm here to tell you about teeth. We'll start from the back. The back are called grinders and they are good for chewing with because they have a double flat surface. Here in front of the grinders are the 4 fangs. They are good for tearing meat with. Only meat eaters or carnivores have these sharp fangs. Lastly, the cutters at the front are for cutting food. Well, thank you ladies and gentlemen. I hope you've under stood what I've said." Hozefa Bootwala ,,....__ On Wednesday it was our play and I was Robin Rat. I was very nervous and shy. My mummy came to watch me but my daddy did not come. Kate was the narrator who told the story of the Bojabi tree. I had to go to King Leo and ask what the fruit was called. He asked me to go in and have something to eat and I said " Yes". I went in and he told me the name of the fruit , Bojabi. I got back in my boat and sailed back home. When they all asked me what it was called I had forgotten. They all smacked me very hard . Do you know something? It hurt a lot. I was unhappy and very sad, then they all sent Pinky Pig, he got into his boat and sailed and sailed till he got to King Leo but he did not ask him to go in and have something to eat , but he told him, and Pinky Pig went home and he had forgotten too. He got a smack. Do you know something? I really do feel sorry for Pinky Pig. Well I will tell you my best part. It was when Tommy Tortoise sang his song. Michelle Stoppa Once upon a time there were some animals. They were very, very hungry . And they were Tabby Tiger, Bruno Bear, Katie Crocodile, Pinky Pig, Giddy Goat, Tommy Tortoise and Mother Tortoise, Robin Rat, Micky Monkey and Colin Kangaroo. Then Giddy Goat said "I 'm so hungry" , "So am I" said Colin Kangaroo . "There's no fruit anymore in the forest now" . "What shall we do?" "I don ' t know, but let's keep on looking" . " Hey, Bruno Bear, come over here. " " Hey, Giddy Goat, come over here," and that's how the play began. When I did my play I felt very, very, very shy because my dad and mum came and I was Tommy Tortoise. I went to the castle to ask King Leo what the fruit was. I was the one who could remember the name of the fruit , " Bojabi". They said if I could remember the name of 1the fruit I would be King of the jungle, and I was. Jaime Norris oo c::, 0 In our play I was Leo-Lion. The first animal that came to me, he came in for something to eat . " What do you want?" "I want to know what this fruit is called and whether we can eat it?" , " You can eat it and it is called Bojabi" , and I didn 't forget and in the end I had to be very angry and I stamped my feet. Mark Allison On Wednesday it was our play and I was the man who has to hold up the 'clap ' sign. When we were getting changed I was very excited and when I was actually doing the play I felt like a wild animal. I thought that I was very good because I had to introduce the programme and I had to say "Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, wel come to our W arid of Animals programme and thank you for being our studio audience, only clap when the sign goes up, please." I liked it. Christopher A y res Yesterday we did our assembly. When we were getting ready I felt nervous and shy but excited when I thought hard about it. I was very relieved when I saw mummy when the show was about to begin. In the show I was Tabby Tiger. When the first bit about bones was finished I held my breath because you see I was first on. I felt happy when we were doing it . I felt sort of like a pineapple but I don ' t know how. Anyway the star of the show was Jaime. She was Tommy Tortoise. When it was finally finished I felt sad but then was so happy that I could do work again. Helen Yates 93 94 On Wednesday we made a T .V. programme called World of Animals. First we sang a song called "Dern bones." Then Professor Barty and Professor Neal and Professor Bootwala showed us about the body. I was Pinky Pig in the part about the Bojabi tree. The animals were Robin Rat, Pinky Pig who was me, Giddy Goat, Tommy Tortoise and his mother , Leo Lion, Colin Kangaroo, Tabby Tiger and Micky Monkey. We were so angry, but then Pinky Pig saw a tree with fruit. Robin Rat went to King Leo and came home but he had not remembered its name. Then me, I didn 't remember either but Tommy did , so we made him king. Bobby Engzell C, In the play I was Micky Monkey and I had to pick the Bojabi fruit and give the fruit to Colin Kangaroo and Colin Kangaroo said "It smells like a B anana-p 1 um-pear-orange-ap pie." Mother Tortoise said , "Let's send Robin Rat," and Robin Rat forgot and then we sent Pinky Pig and Pinky Pig forgot , and then we sent Giddy Goat and then Giddy Goat forgot then we sent Tommy Tortoise and he did not forget. We made Tommy the Tortoise our king. James Fox In my play I was Colin the Kangaroo and Micky Monkey went up the tree and he gave the kangaroo the Bojabi fruit. I said "It smells of banana-plum orange-apple". The other best bit was at the end when we sang "For he's a jolly good fellow".· Christopher Pearson In our assembly I was Giddy Goat. Before the play I felt very excited and nervous. When I went down the river, that was when I was most nervous because that was when I had to say most out of all my part and I thought I would forget my part. When I went down the river saying "Bojabi, attchoo, bojabi attchoo attchoo," until I got to the animals, I said "Bo bo attchoo, I forgot", and I ran away because the animals were very angry. Manuel Pascua I was Bruno Bear and felt normal all the time and wore brown clothes and a brown headress. I came on second and found some ants to eat but it wasn't enough until Pinky Pig found some fruit and it was called the Bojabi tree. Rory Howard I was very excited when the bell rang because I thought that I would get it all wrong because I was very shy · because I was Katy Crocodile. When the pro fessors were on stage I kept hanging onto Sophie's arm and making a squealy noise and when it finished I was excited , more than last time, and I said to Miss Waugh I didn ' t want to say anything because I was shy, but I did and I remembered lines. I gave the Bojabi to Jamie and Sophie poured the cream on the Bojabi and we sang, " For he 's a jolly good fellow! " Emma Probert ~ ~4: -r One day there was a bojabi tree and all the animals stood around it and one by one they asked Leo the Lion what it was. First Robin Rat then Pinky Pig then Giddy Goat then Tommy Tortoise. Only Tommy Tortoise re membered the name of the bojabi tree. If I was in the play I would be Robin Rat because he is very small. Rebecca Holdaway On Wednesday it was our Assembly. I was the narrator. I was very nervous when we started. I had butterflies in my tummy but in some ways I felt happy. All the people who were the animals looked nervous too. I felt as if I was black and blue all over and I felt as if I was in court for doing something wrong. I felt as if everybody was throwing sticks and stones and apples and nuts and rubbers and pencils and bits of paper, but they were not. After the play I felt a bit sad but in some ways I felt happy. I had to sit on a very high box. My mummy was there. I had to say, "In the land of all the beasts there was a great hunger, some of the animals who were so hungry were Tabby Tiger, Bruno Bear, Katy Crocodile, Pinky Pig, Giddy Goat, Tommy Tortoise, Micky Monkey and Colin the Kangaroo". Everytime an animal went up the river, I had to do my bit. I enjoyed it very much. Kate Poulsson On Wednesday it was our day. I was Katy Crocodile. I had to slide on my tummy . I was looking for food because there was no more food in the forest. I didn 't feel nervous. I liked it when we sang "Dern Bones" because it was hard. I was glad it was over too. It started off with Zalzabar coming to the stage. Then the apprentices came on and asked Zalzabar to teach them more tricks. On came the haughty sisters who were looking for Zalzabar. The circus came on, then the excellent angels. There were No-Ls and L-As who weren't all that happy because the No-Ls were picking on them. It all ended happily after the Nativity scene, when Zalzabar went home because he thought the everyday world was too magical. Petra B,eunderman SCENr -.:, s ... KELLETT SCHOOL SPECTACULAR by Theatre Critic Simon Clutterbuck I saw the most exciting play by Class 14 of Kellett School ! They were doing a project on Hong Kong transport so they invented their own play and decided which character they wanted to play. It was about two girls who had a bad dream about transport in the past and future . Their costumes were very colourful. The Robots were really good when it was their turn and so were the people in the past. These clever children in class 14 even wrote their own songs . My favourite song was "The Peak Tram Rag". The producer was the hard-working Mrs Goldstein, movement was by the energetic Mrs Probert and music was by the musical Mrs Clark. r .. f- "--1' LI ~L tNC)IH? REUIEW!, HEWS A CONCERT REVIEW Yesterday the sweetest music floated through Kellett School. The choir sang "Gypsy Rover". The song was accom panied by glorious guitars and a fantastic flute , not to forget a pro fessional pianist (Mrs L. Evans). The song echoed in all the audience 's ears. The choir picked up the tune very quickly and are going to perform next at Bradbury Junior School. Morag Ashdown BREAKFAST TV REVIEW On Wednesday 30th January Kellett Breakfast TV performed for the first time in Hong Kong at Kellett School which was strange because they both begin with Kellett. The press tried to find out where Kellett Breakfast TV were going to perform next, but they did not have time to tell us. They started by singing a song called "We're on the air." This was follow ed by the news and weather report. In the second halfof the programme there was the pop group Wham! singing " Bad boys" and two famous people, Hope Dickson Smitt and Clariko Forsykosan. Then the programme finished off with the song "KTV reporter." Charles Bell BREAKFAST TV: A REVIEW On the 30th of January Kellett School class 13 performed a play on Breakfast TV. 22 children were involved. There was local news, sports news, world news, weather and a financial report . The producers were Mrs Croslegh and Mrs Keenan. After the first half there was a commercial, it was the South China Morning Post. It was very realistic. On the second half of the programme there was a pop group called "Wham!" and two people were interviewed - Hope Dickson Smitt and Clariko Forsykosan. I think that Hope and Clare could have spoken a bit more loudly. Apart from that I thought the play was terrific. Christopher Pawson FEATURES THE DARK, DARK TRIP On November 14th I went on a fantastic underground train with classes 13 and 14. We were going to visit the MTR Control Room at Kowloon Bay. When we went to get our tickets I got two tickets. I couldn 't understand it! We took them to the ticket inspector and he put one of them in a machine about 5 times. Then he gave it back to me. When I got to the ticket machine to get to the trains I put my ticket in and this time I got my ticket back. After that we went down an escalator and what did I see at the bottom but a tube and lots of people. We only had to wait 5 minutes and the train was there. There were so many people on it. We started to go . When we got inside the tunnel I couldn't see a thing it was so dark and there were so many people. Then we got off at the second to last station on the line and this was above ground. It was light at last! Peter Evans IT'S LIGHT AT LAST! 44 excited children got onto the bus. What was going to happen next? We reached the Eastern Corridor. We were surrounded by water! Were we going to fall into the water? No! We couldn't wait till we got to McDonalds at Taikoo Shing. We got nearer and nearer until we were there! We were more excited than ever! We were going all around City Plaza searching for McDonalds and we all went to McDonalds and we all ate hamburgers and french fries, and we drank Fanta. After that we went back ~o school through Tai Tam, Stanley and Repulse Bay. We had gone all around the Island. What a tiring day! Ricardo Pascua M.T.R. One Wednesday in November we went on an M.T.R. trip and to McDonalds. P 14 went with us. We went down stairs, got on the bus and went to Admiralty. We got off and went down the steps. The lady who was with us gave us money for the tickets, which we put through the machine. When we had all done it, we got on the M.T.R. train and went to Kowloon Bay. Then we went to the control room. A lady, who told us about computers, said that there are no drivers on the M.T.R ., because the control room drives all the trains. When she had finished talking, we went to McDonalds and had something to eat. Then we went down the Island Eastern Corridor. Edwina Guy LANTERN EXHIBITION Well it was a nice sunny day when class 13 from Kellett School went to a lantern exhibition in the City Hall. In the exhibition room there was an ET made from papier mache. There was a Sam Eagle and Spider. All of them were very good. Class 13 drew pictures of them. Most children liked Sam Eagle, but I thought ET was the best. Jamie Watson PIRATES INVADED DEEP WATER BAY (On December the 18th, 1984, 44 pirates invaded Deep Water Bay) Deep Water Bay invaded by pirates But they weren't there for riots. A party they were there for I bet they really wanted more: Boxes of sweets and pieces of gold - Though an invisible ship doesn't have a hold . Hot dogs and melting marshmallow they ate, Tney ate that food at quite a rate! Magnificent sandcastles everywhere All those castles were very rare , 44 pirates everywhere Now pirates are very rare. Nigel Wetten CHRISTMAS PARTY For Primary Fours' Christmas party they went to Deep Water Bay. The children dressed up as pirates. They had to find silver stones. For finding them they got some pieces of eight. Then they had their lunch, which was a barbecue. Later they had a sandcastle competition in which there were many winning entries. Hugh Styles 103 104 HOSPITAL REPORT Hello! I am a reporter from the South China Morning Post going to the Canossa Hospital to see a patient. He is called Edward Bayliss. On Saturday 2nd February he went for a blood transfusion. The hospital had to wait for the blood, because he has a rare blood group. At night Edward could not go to sleep because the bells were ringing in the nurse's room. In the morning he asked if he could move rooms. Later on Edward and his mother moved into another room. In there they put the drip up . After that he played some card games. The next day he received another pint of blood and we are glad to hear that he is back at school , enjoying his lessons. Edward Bayliss FEATURES A BREATHLESS DAY When classes 14 and 13 went on a trip to the Peak we had a good, hot, sunny and enjoyable day except for the long walk around the Peak which a lot of lazy children did not like. We saw lots of interesting creatures: a worm about 12cm long, a centipede, a moth and a stick insect. Then I spotted some red paint on a rail and do you know we were looking for red paint because we had a worksheet telling us to look for things and mark where we found them on our map. Sadly it was the wrong red paint mark but later we found the right one. All the children were panting and breath less by the time we stopped for lunch but we were more breathless when we were going backwards on the Peak tram later on! Sally Novak I COULD HA VE GOT LOST IN THE MUSIC Did you know that classes 14 and 15 went on an outing to Stanley Fort School? No, they didn't go there to see the school. Yes, they bet you are still guessing why they went. Shall I tell you? They went because they wanted to hear the music of the 22nd Cheshire Regiment for 1 hour of the Cheshire's great music. They played some loud and some sweet, soft music and one time a teacher and a little girl had to go to do something with the band. I'm glad it wasn't me. The money that he won through people sponsoring him was sent to Ethiopia to help the starving people. Also in 1984 my friend Peter and I thought of a football match for our class at games time. This would give an opportunity for the girls to play and for us all to play on the big pitch. We made up the teams. They were called Manchester United and White Tigers. On the morning of the match when I woke up, I suddenly realised we should have a prize. So I looked around my room and found a prize. The match had started. Peter thought Manchester United would win but we didn't, the White Tigers won. Gavin got the prize because he scored two goals and was the man of the match. Ben Tyrrell SPORTS At Saturday Sports first we practise then we play a proper game of football. We have to dribble and drive. Saturday sports is only every other Saturday. We have a break between the practice and the game. The girls play skipping and some play football. I like the match and especially winning. Jacob Hopkin Fisher SATURDAY SPORTS Every second Saturday lots of Kellett children and I go and play football. First we practise dribbling and driving with a football. At the end we have a match. The girls play rounders and skipping. I interviewed Amanda and she said she liked relay races. Emily liked obstacle races. I like soccer best of all. Dalan Nugent SPORTS In Kellett School there are lots of sports to do. Indoor sports, outdoor sports, rounders, netball , football and sometimes Mrs Probert (the P.E. Teacher) takes the fives and sixes to a playing field in Aberdeen. Mrs. Probert also runs a gym club on Mondays and Fridays. Clare Forsyth has lately joined the gym club. She explained to me what they do. When gym club starts they first of all warm up by doing lots of exercises. When she went to gym club the second time Mrs Probert had brought a new trampette and beam. Clare Forsyth is very interested in gym and likes it very much. I can tell by her expressions. Clare Forsyth CAMP'S FANTASTIC Classes 14 and 13 will be going on camp to Cheung Chau from March 6th to 8th. I like camp because you miss school. I am looking forward to camp because my sister went last year and told me all about it. I am . looking forward to playing in the sand, going in the pirate's cave and seeing wild dolphins, but I am not looking forward to sleeping in a dormitory with everyone else because they make a lot of noise and it will be difficult to get to sleep. It doesn't really matter if we're tired after camp because we go home on Friday and have two days to sleep before school on Monday. Jacqueline Landells OUTWARD BOUND CAMP IS GREAT!! I'm looking forward to camp this year. Last year the primary 3s went to Wu Kwai Sha which is in the New Territories. I enjoyed it a lot but it was only for one night. This year we are having two nights at Cheung Chau. Last year it was hot but rainy, this year I hope it will be sunny. Last year we had 4 different huts to stay in. This year we are all staying in one building with big rooms for the boys and big rooms for the girls. I prefer this because I like being with everyone. Last year the food was horrible! Wh y can't people think of Ethiopians before themselves , instead of spending their money on sweets and other things like that? I feel sorry for the Ethiopians. When my family and I had a New Year's party , also a games evening, we made people pay for the games they played and the guesses they had . We all chose a charity. My granny chose Ethiopia and I chose something else. Someone put their hand in a hat and pulled out a paper.... . It was Ethiopia. it was my granny's!! So we sent all the money to them . From Solene Arcus LETTERS PAGE Dear Dorothee, I miss you an awful lot! I could hardly bear to leave you! In Hong Kong the school is beautiful. It starts at 9 o'clock and finishes at 3.0 ' clock. We have a 'uniform and the colours are red, white and grey. I love my school uniform because the colours are so nice. Now I don't have to wonder what to wear each morning. We have a library and a cooking room. I am in class 14 and my teacher is very kind. I have recorder lessons that are funny , much shorter than in Germany. We have Sports just like you and games that you have not got, like soccer and rounders. Please tell our teacher that I miss her very much, and the rest of the class ! From Vanessa Williams FARAWAY FRIENDS Dear class 2D, (In England), My name is Emma Manville. My age is eight. I come from Hong Kong. The thing I like best in school is P.E. The places where we do PE are in the playground and the hall. The play ground is very big and has lots of room. I find Hong Kong very hot especially when I am running. I am half Chinese and half English, but it is funny because I was born in Hong Kong. Sometimes we have a choir when people sing songs and we also have plays in the hall. Also we have indoor PE. At indoor PE we play races, jumping on apparatus and we do lots of other activities. I hope you will write soon. Gavin Rees A SCOOP - CLUBS lr-lEWS I I I I I • • - - . -- ~ DOWN WITH BADNESS Mrs Coultous is in charge of school rules. She makes sure that they are not broken. There are lots of rules in our school and I decided to ask Mrs Coultous about some of them. She said that the two most important rules were to remember to do your best in school work, and to always treat other people well. Mrs Coultous also mentioned other important rules , such as no running in the school building, no spitting and no silliness (including throwing stones) and she said that everyone should wear the right uni form. I think that our New Year's Resolution should be not to break school rules. Kate Carver KING OF THE CLUBS We wanted to know just how much trouble clubs caused and what you have to do to sort them out, write them down and see how many children go into them so Gina and I went to ask Mr Marshall some questions. I asked Mr. Marshall how long it takes to sort out the clubs on the list and which days the clubs are on and he answered not very long because the teachers choose their own clubs and the days to have them. Mr. Marshall said he would like to try several of the clubs but he's glad he doesn't have to choose. He also told me that he had the tiring job of sorting out the clubs all by himself but I'm glad he does it because I enjoy mine so much. Jaime Broadhurst I LOVE CLUBS I think clubs are a lot of fun and they make playtimes a lot more interesting. I have been in this school for less than a year and I think it is good having clubs because it teaches you lots of things you didn't know before. In my last school in England they didn ' t have clubs but I think it 's better here with them. It must be difficult clwosing who will be in what club so I made a chart of the most popular clubs in the primary fours. I was surprised that badminton was so popular, maybe it's because there aren't many places in Hong Kong where you can play. Gina Rich 108 TRANSPORT HEWS THE HISTORY OF CARS We are studying old fashioned cars for our class project and I am investigating the Rolls Royce Partnership. We had a raffle to see who would be finding out about the different parts of the history of cars . When we had the raffle my name ca me out with the Rolls Royce Partnership. which I wanted. The Rolls Royce has lots of different cars like the Silver Ghost . I wish I had an old fashioned car. There are quite a few Rolls Royces in Hong Kong. I think finding out about old fashioned cars is a good idea and it is quite fun. There are about 7.000 parts in an engine but I don't think I'll find out about all of them. There were a lot of people who . invented different types of cars like Henry Royce. Carl Benz, Gottlieb , Daimler, Joseph Cugnot and lots more. First you need all these things: paper, cardboard, sellotape. scissors and a pencil. 1. Trace the car that's on top of this piece of writing. 2. Cut out this drawing, 3. Put it on the cardboard and draw round it pointing to the right and pointing to the left. 4. Look at the diagram and draw it out on your cardboard. This is the middle part of the car. (back. roof, windscreen , bonnet and radiator) . 5. ·ow decorate your car pieces. 6. Cut out your car pieces. Sellotape the two car sides and the middle section together and then your car is finished. 7. To make it move you use bobbins. about 3½ centimetres in diameter . 8. The first person puts his car at the top of t he ramp and lets it go. 3. Get a sti cker wit h your name o n it and put it in front of the car when it stops and that shows how far your car has gone. 4. Now your friends have their turns. 5. Now look at the cars and see whose went the furthest. Are you surprised your cars went different distances? We were. Do you know why this is? It's because of the different amounts of friction between the axle, the axle hole and the bobbin wheel. If your car runs in a curved line it's because the axles aren't parallel. Robin Phillips COMPUTER WAYS This section is about the BBC com puter. The school uses the BBC and I also have a BBC. At first I couldn't use the computer so I thought hard until I found the manual. I only wish that the school computer and my computer were on a Central Processing Unit Main Frame so that I could get into the school system whenever I wanted. Well back to how a computer can work . You can use a cassette recorder and/ or disc. drive . I have a tape cassette record er but at school we have both. I like playing with a computer because you can choose from thou sands of games. I think it is useful having the same computer as at school. l ·would recommend the BBC if you are a beginner. James Lay field COMPUTER BIG TRAK ADVENTURE One sunny day I programmed Big Trak to take mum's and dad 's breakfast into their bedroom and back to the kitchen. l don ' t know why but Big Trak never came back. I looked all over the house but I could not find Big Trak. I went into the hall. The door was open. I went out into the garden but Big Trak was not there. Where could Big Trak be? Big Trak was halfway down the road when it saw a crook running. Big Trak fired his lazer at the crook who fell down. The police gave chase. Big Trak went zooming all the way down the road and turned a corner. Right on that very corner a gang was at a milk float. They ran away and then it blew up. What had been Big Trak 's lazer was now a fire extinguisher! Big Trak put the fire out in two minutes. I went to look for Big Trak again and l found him zooming up the road . This is because when it is on a smooth surface it 's easier to slide. Hope Dickson Leach 109 110 HORSES One Thursday I went to Pokfulam. I saw some children riding ponies. I spoke to the riding teacher. The teacher said that a horse died because he was sick. We went up to the horses and ponies. A pony was called Snoopy and a horse was named Flash. In the lesson the teacher showed the children how to do jumping, cantering and trotting. Siobhan Way PETS SCHOOL RABBITS In Kellett School there are three rabbits . They eat lettuce, carrot heads, oats, bread in milk, apple, pak choy, crusts, sunflower seeds and they drink water. They have to be looked after by Mrs Tully . They have a very big hutch with lots of straw to sleep in. They go home with people at the weekends and at the end of term. Their big hutches get cleaned every morning when the rabbits have lots of fun running around . The bottoms of the hutches have to be lined with newspaper. ' They live together in a small brown house, their carpet is straw. Their cleaning lady comes to clean their home every morning at around eight o'clock. Patch 's favourite for breakfast is choy sum while Scrabble prefers carrot tops. For lunch they normally dine on lettuce, then of course all through the day they have oat snacks. Every weekend they go on holiday. For the Christmas holidays they spent a pleasant time at the Pearsons in Strawberry Hill. ' In fact the guinea-pigs really do enjoy their life at Kellett . Emily Harman TWEETY: PART 1 - A NOISY BIRD We used to have a canary. We got it from a girl called Anna who was in our class in Primary 3. Last summer she went to England. The canary was called Tweety . Tweety was very noisy so we had to put him out in the corridor quite a lot. We liked Tweety so we made up Tweety poems on the computer using the word processor. Tweety loved looking in the mirror and he loved singing, but he disturbed our work so Mrs Tyrrell and Mrs Goldstein thought of a plan ...... to be continue9 - please read E!iane 's article. TWEETY: PART 2 CAGE Sissy Strobl AN EMPTY A few days later Mrs Goldstein told us about Tweety l and this is what she said: " I have given Tweety I to Mrs Tyrrell because he is so noisy but now we have got another quiet Tweety ". " What shall we call her? " we all said, "Tweety 2? " and Mrs Goldstein said "That 's a good idea." That Friday Be~ took Tweety 2 home for the holidays. Before Tweety 2 came to our classroom she was in a cage with lots of other birds and she was the smallest bird and had to fight for food. When she came to our classroom she ate and ate and ate. Ben put Tweenty I and Tweety 2 together so that they wouhl mate but instead they fought. The next day Ben found Tweety 2 dead in the food bowl but we think she died happily. We had six groups. When we first had a go the computer asked "Which equipment do you want?" Our group took a First Aid kit, a knife, a magnifying glass, an axe and a 5 litre water container. The computer set us off at a beach at 79.14 on the north of the island. If you wanted to move you had to type south west or north east and so on. The aim of the programme was to explore the island and survive the hazards of the island. Henry Dean HOW GROUP 6 GOT TO AD VENTURE ISLAND I was going to go to Adventure Island with a group of friends. Their names were Rachel, Tanya and Henry. I wondered why it was very cheap because it was only five dollars a day. We all got in the aeroplane and set off. Henry was the only one who knew how to fly an aeroplane so he took the wheel. I wondered how long it would take to get to Adventure Island. I asked Rachel but she didn't know so I asked Tanya. "6 hours", she said. One hour had passed. There were five hours to go. Five hours later I looked out of the window. I saw an Island! "Land ahoy!" I cried. "It must be Adventure Island" . I felt we were going down. "There's an oil-leak", Henry shouted. "Help!" Tanya cried. There was a sudden splash and we landed in the sea. A few miles ahead there was the island. We all wondered what to do. Ten minutes later I came up with an idea. "I've got it!" "What", all the others said at once. I went to the back of the aeroplane and came back with rubber rings. "What a great idea", Tanya said. We all got changed and started swimming to shore, it was a few miles. At last we reached the island. We were all very tired. "Good grief", I said. Yuki Harris Adventure Island is a small tropical island approximately 27km by 20km. It has a rocky coastline with eleven beaches. Four rivers can be found on the island. There are three hills rising to about 400 metres. Around the coast the vegetation is dense, but as the land gets higher the vegetation thins out. There are tracks on Adventure Island and evidence of people having lived there once. There is an airfield, an abandoned World War II plane, a hut, a tower and an old carved tree. Gareth Fox EQUIPMENT When we went on the Island we got an EQUIPMENT list. There are ten things. But you can only pick 5 things from the list. We picked First Aid kit, mirror, axe, and a magnetic compass, and a knife. We needed these things. We needed a First Aid kit in case we get hurt and we needed a mirror because if a plane goes by we can flash the mirror in the sun light and it will land and rescue us. We can use an axe to fight away animals and we need a magnetic compass so we do not get lost. The knife would be useful for getting food and sharing it out. We didn't choose the water container which was silly of us as we had to keep on finding water each day. Timothy Daley FOOD There are many edible plants on Adventure Island. There is bread fruit which has to be cooked. The seeds can also be eaten. We found a lot of this fruit where the vegetation was moderate. The taro root is also edible. The plant has large heart-shaped leaves so it is easy to identify. The root has to be cooked before it can be eaten. Sweet potatoes, yummy, you can eat them raw or cooked. The plant is like a vine. There is a lot of bamboo on Adventure Island. It is good to eat raw or cooked. There are coconut trees, the milk of the coconut is good to drink, they are difficult to open! Sometimes we were able to eat fish if we were on a beach. These would have to be barbecued. Nobody died of starvation on Ad venture Island. Tanya Reid HOW I GOT TO ADVENTURE ISLAND My friends and I went on a pleasure cruise that was only for children. We got the tickets. When I got aboard I went straight to my room. When I finished unpacking I went outside. I waved goodbye to my family. About three hours or so later, the boat started to rock. It got me a bit scared. Suddenly there was a big bang. The engine stopped. The boat exploded. I can't remember anything and I don't know how I got here on this beach. Sally Shillinglaw THE WEATHER CONDITIONS The island's weather is generally HOT. However it can start to deteriorate. It is quite possible for the wind to reach wind force 12 on the Beaufort Scale. For three days we had beautiful sun but the fourth day we saw some storm clouds on the horizon. The fifth day we had storm clouds and rain. We had wind force 6. The rain came from the water. The water vapour rises. Higher up the air is colder. Then the water vapour cools and the water droplets are formed. A cloud is formed . The next day it got bad, it went to wind force I 0 (which is the typhoon signal 8). Then the weather went on to wind force 12 . Wind force 12 is like typhoon Ellen. Then it improved and the sun came back. But when it was wind force 12 , the wind was howling and the trees were swinging to and fro. But we managed to walk through the wind . We were trying to go to a hut but Russell's health went down. When we typed Finish for the day, Russell 's health came up to 67%. Edward 's health was 100% and my health was 100%. We had taken a path so we took a shorter time. SICKNESS Malaria Audrey Clerc-Renaud You get malaria from the bite of an infected mosquito. There are lots on Adventure Island. The tablets that you take are called quinine tablets. When you are bitten you get hot and cold and have a high fever . Edward got bitten but he recovered with quinine. Cuts Cuts must be cleaned with antiseptic or else they will get septic and bad. Tanya was cut badly on a thorn bush. Dysentery Dysentery is caused by drinking dirty water or eating dirty food. So all food must be cooked properly and all water must be boiled. Luckily no one got it. Laura Hobkinson HEALTH The health on "Adventure Island" is very important. As group leader l was responsible for my group and I had to keep a watch on their health at all times. If their fitness went down I had to decide what to do . You can see the chart on the daily log sheet which Rachel has drawn. Some of the health hazards were sunstroke , sunburn, heat exhaustion, malaria and dysentery. In our First Aid kit we had aspirin, plasters, bandages, a morphine syringe , antiseptic, dis infectant , mepacrine , charcoal tablets. sunburn ointment , insect repellent , water purification tablets , salt tablets , kaolin , quinine, paracetamol, hydro cortisone cream and quinine tablets. Russell Phillips THE USE OF A DAILY LOG We used a daily log because we couldn't remember the writing on the screen of the computer. We also wanted to be like famous travellers. They always keep track of where they have been and what they have done . Rachel Crawshaw • ?%a BEWARE OF THE SUN On Adventure Island it is very sunny. The sun can be very dangerous. If you stay out in it too long, you can get sunstroke , which makes you feverish and sick. Heat exhaustion can also make you feel ill , you get dizzy and sick . Salt tablets can help with heat exhaustion. Antonia Regan 113 114 BLACK BEARD'S TREASURE We found a tree at square 18.68. It had a message carved into it. But some of the letters had been worn away. They said SE-K FOR TREA-URE IF YO WIL- -ORTH -EA-T B-N-TH L-OKO-T HI-L CPT TEACH, which means SEEK FOR TREASURE IF YOU WILL NORTH-EAST BENEATH LOOKOUT HILL CAPTAIN TEACH, we found out that the treasure was hidden under the biggest hill, in a mine. The mine was in square 32.74. When we got there we recovered Black Beard's note book which indicated that his treasure was buried in the side of the wall of a tunnel 10 metres beneath the surface of the hill. The hill slopes up at 10 degrees and the tunnel slopes down at 13 degrees. When we worked out how many metres down the tunnel the treasure was, we explored down there and we found the treasure at 24 metres. After we had found the treasure we filled our pockets and we got out of the mine before it collapsed on us. Simon Mann THE SPIDER AT THE AIRFIELD We had been walking for several hours. We were looking for the abandoned airfield. Then suddenly we pushed the bushes aside. There was a clearing, and it was the abandoned airfield . We went from hut to hut looking for something that we could use but as we went in to Number 2 there was a scream "EEEEEEEEEK! ! !" and I was bitten by a spider. I felt a lot of pain in my arm and I felt sick. We sat down. I still felt very sick. I felt dizzy too. I was very weak so we stopped for the day. The next day we left the abandoned airfield. We set out to look for food and water. I was feeling much better. Yamini Narain DANGEROUS ANIMALS ~ This• spider is poisonous. It drops from trees. The pain cannot bring death. There is a grumpy tiger who roams around somewhere on Adventure Island. Beware there is no tiger behind you this very second. Nobody met this fierce tiger, we are not sure whether or not he really exists! There is a fierce old boar who can charge a healthy group and cause lots of injuries. Chantal and Craig were both charged and their health went down a lot. If you get bitten by an infected mosquito you get malaria. The cure is quinine. The hump nose viper is one metre long. It hides in dead leaves. Its bite is not fatal, but not pleasant. The Russel Viper moves very slowly. It can jump and attack. The deadly King Cobra bit me and that's why I died on Adventure Island. It is very dangerous. Karen Spillane THE TREASURE There it was - the treasure! Right in front of me. I ran, it was lovely, the rubies and diamonds were pouring out . I filled my pockets full. I stuffed my shirt . I put rubies in my shorts and when I had filled every part of my clothing we had to get out, I was thinking what I could spend the treasure on when I got out of this mess. I would buy a big car, a kingdom of dogs, a diamond ring with rubies on. We went down lots of passages. It was cold and dark. About an hour went past and at last we got out. I will never forget that treasure cave! Elizabeth Watkins IF I HAD FOUND THE TREASURE If I had found the treasure I would have kept it and taken it to my boat and would not have let any strangers have it. And I would share it with my family and all my friends. I would give the rubies, diamonds, sapphires, neck laces, bracelets, earrings and rings to my mummy and my sister and I would keep the rest. With the coins I would buy my mummy a dog called an Airdale and buy my sister and me a poodle. And I would buy my sister a horse that would be her dream come true. And I would buy my cat, Sam, a big juicy rabbit. His dream come true! And I would buy my Dad a blue Rolls Royce, his dream come true! Giles Hampson-Taylor MY INJURY My first injury was falling into a pit. None of our group knew what to do . In our equipment we had a first aid kit , a magnifying glass, an axe, a 5 litre water container and a magnetic compass. We had nothing to rescue me with as unfortunately we had not chosen the rope . As we had an axe my group decided to cut down a vine and lower one end down the pit. Very slowly and carefully I climbed up the vine. It was difficult but I made it. Richard Durack THE NUCLEAR BOMB As we were walking I spotted a tower. It had ladders to get up. We went inside. I felt the excitement mounting inside me. We saw a tunnel. We went through. There , in the corner was an aluminium box, Liz said, "Let's look inside it." "Wait ," ·I said, "I will lift the lid" KAPOOF! "What's happening?" said Sally. The computer told us that it was a nuclear bomb which had been activated by raising the lid. To stop the countdown we had to find a number between 1000 and 9999 and we only had three minutes to do it. At first we guessed numbers, then we started to think. The computer told us if it was too high or low, so we typed in 5,000, then 2,500, then 1,000, that was too low and so on until we found the number. It was 1125. We had 32 seconds left. We all cheered "Hooray, hooray!" The computer told us that we would be rescued at the nearest beach in two days. Craig Rackham GROUP 3'S DEATH We set off on our adventure. Suddenly I got bitten by a mosquito. I had Malaria! Then we went on further. I got bitten by a hump-nosed viper! My feet dragged on the ground. I climbed up the tower very slowly. There was a wooden shed. In the shed there was a metal box. We opened it. Suddenly it started the count down. It was a bomb. We had to try to stop the countdown. We had a map so we travelled for eleven hours until we found a stream. We were so tired that we drank some water and slept. When we woke up, we looked at the map and walked for five hours until we found a hut. Inside it , we found a portable generator and some tins of food . We rested for the day. When I woke up I was feeling ill. Susan got up, staggered and fell down and was. lying still and limp. Timothy was sitting down, his face was ghostly white. I tried to get up but my legs would not move. I weakly crawled to my feet using the support of the trunk of a tree. I called to Susan and Timothy, "I'm going to find water." My tongue was dry and my throat was burning. On and on I went. With each step I felt my strength being taken from me. I heard the crunching of the others' footsteps on the dead grass behind me. I walked for nine hours and reached the stream. I fell over and shut my eyes. I felt cold and sick, I saw a blur of faces ... ... I was gone. Barbara Scott RESCUE ON ADVENTURE ISLAND One very hot day we went up to a place near a beach, still looking for some where to get rescued. We were loosing hope and stopped to rest. The next day we decided to go to the beach and found some turtle eggs. We went on the other side of the beach and saw a submarine. The submarine's crew spotted us and we were rescued after 5 exhausting days on Adventure Island. We quickly gave her salt pills and stopped for the day . The next day we started walking again, she said "Can we stop?" We said to her, "No". She fell down and died. Trusting is the most important feeling for being close to friends. When I lie or when I cry, I always hide my bad feelings. Inside I feel good when I am with my cat. When I am put in the B team I go angry inside. Sometimes when I cuddle close to mummy when I feel sad it makes my bad feelings good again. I like going out in the junk, my feelings feel jiggly as I sway from side to side. I feel really proud when I answer a question nobody knows. I feel happy when my Daddy comes back from China. I am happy when my brother laughs : I am sad when he cries. I feel frustrated when I get the wrong note in flute or when I get muddled up in piano. Lunch in a park makes me happy . Naughty people make me sad. I like art, during the week . We normally do maths work. It doesn ' t make me feel bad or good. I feel good when I remember the sunny days in Australia. I kicked the ball from the half-way mark and I got a goal once and I felt very proud of myself. Sometimes I feel sad when my brother hurts himself, or somebody dies , or I get shouted at. We children alr1ost never get a say in things. What about World War Two' Ii we had been ai lowed to vot e, we would have put someone capable on the Government to stop thero fighting. But what happened? Millions of children were left fatherless. Is that fair?
