This year I have been able to offer them a copy of the magazine which I'm sure gives them a very effective insight into the school. Teachers and children have again combined resources to pro duce another delightful edition and I'm sure they will enjoy look ing at the many reminders of this school year recorded in photos, paintings, drawings and writing within these pages. Today as I took visitors to the classrooms the excellent relation ships between staff and children, the busy enthusiastic approach displayed by the children and the keen involvement in various areas of the curriculum were very evident. The four year-olds, having recently been to ride on the tram, had created tram lines around the covered area and were buying tickets for the various stops, one group were recording their im~ pressions with detailed drawings of the tram, all careful to include the overhead cables, while another group were making a model guided by discussion on the merits of the various seats. One class of five year-olds having returned from the garden with specimen flowers, were involved in detailed drawings before going on to make a real red bottle brush tree, next to the 'fun brush' tree hanging with a paint brush, tooth brush,' hair brush and so on - which had produced much lively discussion. Some of the six year-olds were keen to show the visitors their food topic books, to explain which parts of the plant we eat when we have carrots, peas and leeks for lunch, and to recount their shopping trip to Wah Fu to buy a "balanced meal" for $10! As we moved on to the junior department we had difficulty leaving the Primary III classroom where the children were very excited about the puppies visiting from the RSPCA; they could identify male and females now and were looking forward to the arrival of a litter of rabbits expected any day. We stopped with a class of eight year-olds who were making the 'Flower of Crystal' with jewel-like blossoms made from pentagonal, square and triangular based pyramids - "It's very easy , you divide the circle into fifths, so you have to measure these angles and then cut and fold it like this . . . " "Yesterday we made wide-mouthed fish - this is mine - it's an acute-angled silver-lipped flapper and that one is an obtuse-angled greater spotted garoupa." Moving on to the Primary V we met some of the visitors staying in the "newest Hong Kong hotels" created by the class;, some with impressive passports recording round the world trips were studying brochures advertising the hotels' facilities before deciding where to stay - while the other class of ten year-olds were putting the final touches to their handbound 'Adventure Island ' log books. Some of the Primary VI children were giving a prepared lecture at the Hong Kong Explorers' Club meeting - explaining the finer points of exploration in the Arctic following their research, while the other group were sharing their thoughts on pollution through poetry. From The Principal As we passed the hall the choir were practising for the coming concert on conservation, "Safari Serenade" which includes poetry, prose and songs written by the children and will be backed by slides of the many beautiful paintings of animals. What parents ask about the school can be answered by seeing the children involved in their work, by feeling some of their enthusiasm, by sharing the satisfaction they get from producing excellent work beautifully presented . This year's magazine is a good reflection of the work which has gone on during the year. I would like to congratulate the magazine committee, the teachers and , of course, the children on yet another exciting edition of the Kellett magazine. 3 4 Our Teachers Mrs. V. Primary 1 - Rabbit Raffle Primary II - Book Swop Sale Primary III Christmas Card Exhibition We raised money for SANTA by mak ing Christmas cards. We put them all around the hall on display . You had to bring one dollar to go in , and if you did not remember to bring one dollar Mrs. Robinson would give you some. They were all good. Some of the teachers' cards were very funny . One of them said 'Have a jolly holly day at Christmas'. We all raised a lot of money. Dugald Pollitt Primary IV - Cake Sale Primary V - Pound Puppy Adoption Primary VI's Spellathon As you know each class was asked to think of a scheme to raise money for the SANT A appeal, the Primary Six's ·had a Spellathon. Everyone nervously picked up their pencils and looked at each other - this was going to be the longest spelling test in their lives . One hundred words had been given to learn and one hun dred words should be right . Mr. Miller slowly said the words, repeat ing them twice . Each person's hand was scribbling something. I, myself, was sweating and wondering when the test would be over. At last Mr. Miller said the last word and we looked up from our papers. We corrected them, crossed and ticked them. The four people who got all the spellings right were Clare, Howard , Morag and Ophe lia, they did very well. Nicky Staff - Special Luncheon SANTA T saw quite a lot of little children but only a few big ones because they were at school. The children live in little cottages and they have people to look after them. I tried to carry a great big bag of toys off the bus but I couldn't manage it. Mrs. Trimble helpecl me. Anna Fundraiser Chinese New Year Chinese New Year lasts fifteen days . January 29th is the beginning of the Year of the Rabbit . On New Year's Eve families meet for a special meal with special food. It takes the Chinese families ten days to prepare for Chinese New Year, people clean their homes, buy new clothes, pay back debts and make up quarrels. The children receive laisee packets. This year children from our school took presents to St. Christopher's Home to help them celebrate. Clare Smith St. Christopher's Home When we got to St. Christopher's Home a lady came and directed us to the baby section. Then we took the bags with the toys in and carried them, to the baby section which was a house-like building. First of all we went to see children about two to three years old. They were having lunch and we gave them each a toy . They looked very happy. After that we went to see children about three to four years old . I think they were having a music lesson because they were singing, and we gave them toys and they looked happy too . Exploring Time Namia Time I was walking along on the street doing my morning shopping when I realized what time it was . I rushed to the nearest telephone I could find and without looking what box I was going to , I sat down inside a time machine . Still without thinking what the box was called I dialed my number but that number to the time machine was to tell the machine to go back into the past. I looked at my watch it was one pm. Suddenly I froze and I felt shivers going up my legs then in to my body and my arms and then head and then all the shiver went away I felt myself turning upside down I looked at my watch only I second had gone past and I appeared in Narnia. I stepped out of the box and realised that it was a time machine. I saw a man and women walking towards me . I asked them, "Why are you dressed in those clothes?" I said "You must be in the past," "Yes!" said the man . The man took me to his home and gave me a hot cup of tea. We talked fo r a long time then suddenly I looked up at his grandfather clock, "I have to go!" I said and made my way back to the time machine. Clare Buttery News Time It was news time. The man on the news said that strange messages were coming from Pluto. Suddenly the T.V. turned blank. I opened my closet and got my robot out. We jumped on my bed, then my bed turned into a space ship and the space ship took off. Trusty the robot said "We are getting close to Pluto!" Crash! We landed on Pluto. Then we found that we were in a monster town. "Trusty! Look out!" We went over to the Monster. When we got there we found that it was a time machine. We went head over heels back home. Please would you let me drive?" and the robot said , "My name is Bleep, I will let you drive because you are my master. We are going in to a future space station." Then I saw a hollow glass circle, I asked Bleep if that was the space station and Bleep said "Yes." There was a runway to land on. So I landed the space ship and when we had landed a hatch opened and we jumped down and walked down the apron and went down another hatch in the ground and we were inside the space station. Bleep told me that I would be an astronaut when I was 30. After that I was back in the present. Then I went to sleep. As soon as we had got on the junk it lifted into the air and landed in 1922 and the fire crackers went off again and it was still Chinese New Year because their new year is always after ours in January. I was back in the present. 91 Exploring Time It was 1987 when I woke up in the morning at 9:30 and found a sort of a square thing. It looked like a time machine. Then suddenly , it stopped and the doors opened and there I was. I was in the middle of the past. I went out to look around myself. We heard Chinese people shaking pots with sticks in the pot and the sticks had numbers on and we heard fire crackling and people calling. I saw peach blossom. The peach blossom was pink. People were burning pigs. Luisa got a windmill. We had lunch at Wong Tai Sin temple. There were ashes because of the cauldron. The cauldron had fire in it. Chinese people put paper in the cauldron. When I went there all I smelt was the joss sticks, that was a strong perfumed smell and I saw the oranges and the peach blossom and all bright colours of the Temple. The colours are green and red . Then we put our ticket through a hole and there was another hole and it pop ped out and you took it out and you got through. Then we got the train to Mongkok and then we got off and got on to another train and then we got off. We were there. We went up some steps to a market and we went through the market to the temple. Then we got some money free as we went in. And the first thing we did was we saw a lot of temples and then we saw a temple that was open and there were peach blossoms. Then we saw a fountain but it wasn't working and it had two terrapins and some fish . And we went to see a big cauldron with fire in and people were burning stuff in it. Then we went to draw some things. Then we went for dinner. And after dinner we were allowed to play and after that we went to the market. I got a windmill and then we had to go back to the train. I saw a lady praying and saying some thing in Chinese so I couldn 't under stand what she was saying. I also saw a peach blossom next to an orange tree. I loved the Temples with their mysterious patterns and lines. At Wong Tai Sin Temple I also heard people praying. I heard the shaking of the chim. I saw the barong, a made up play where the people wore masks. When we came out we saw children - I think they were orphans, selling flowers like pink tulips. In the fire dance the man was in a trance and he danced on the fire , his feet were swollen at the end. Some girls in a trance danced with their eyes closed but all doing the same move ment at the same time. I heard the gongs clashing. When I went to watch the barong I heard music that was different to the music we listen to in Hong Kong. I smelt chips. They smelt like potato chips with potato inside. The hamburgers smelt spicy. Grubble went to the Crystal planet to get the sap from trees to make bubble because he loved bubble gum. Grubble built hotels, cafes, shops and factories. He des troyed the planet by pulling up all the flowers . Grubble's Grabbers are coming closer, closer and closer. I put on my dis guise kit hoping that they won't recognise me. Luckily they didn't. I sneaked into the room where the city pass was kept. It was in a box . The box was locked! On No! Mr. Grubble was coming. I hid behind a box and when he went out I was able to get it. I hid behind big bowls of bubbling bubble gum. I made my way out with the city pass. Lisa Hunt Rumala I am Rumala and I love plants more than the people who destroy the Crystal Planet. I feed the animals and they talk to me. One day I was eating an apple when Blue Bleeper flew to me and said " Chuck, there are metal monsters eating up the planet, chuck." and flew away. I gasped , I went to investi gate. The monster was a bulldozer and there were cranes lifting up bricks to make a new building! The cranes were making a horrid noise like "CLANG, CLONK, BOWK, BANG" I couldn't stand the noise . I ran away. I tried to tell people that they were destroying Crystal but they wouldn't listen. I began to think of what to do and made a plan . I went home and got some fertilizer , a magic gold pot , soil from different parts of the planet, and some magic water. I hid them and wrote some magic writing in the sky for my follower , whoever he might be. Lastly I hid the last Crystal flower and protected it with spells. Ming Ming Thompson Crystal Personalities @ POUNCERS Pouncers lurk on the roads of Crystal. Sometimes they pounce on you but most of the time they leave you alone. When the Pouncers come there is this thump and bump and they appear on the road. They sometimes take your equipment. Pouncers are red and when they jump their yellow top come off. If you meet a pouncer you just hope that it will go away. Mr. Grubble Mr. Grubble is fifty-two and a half years old and he loves bubble gum. He has body guards to protect him and nobody liked him except his body guards and the Blids. Mr. Grubble loves making money and bubble gum. When my mother saw me for the first time she was not worried but as I grew up she thought I was odd. I was top of my class but everyone did not like me because I was odd. We chose to take a disguise and a fright stick so we could go into the factory without Grubble's Grabbers recognis ing us. We took a Fright Stick which protects us ,rm Fright Freaks and has a pointed end. Flames come out of the end when we see Fright Freaks. Chinese New Year Preparations. My part in the assembly was being Grandma and I was cleaning the family shrine. I was cleaning the shrine for Chinese New Year's Eve when the family would worship their ancestors. I put out tea and wine in little bowls. I put out chicken, meat and oranges on dishes for the spirits. I also put out joss-sticks to burn on New Year's Eve. We burn the candles at the sides of the picture. In the even ing the family will worship ancestors by bowing three times with the joss sticks in our hands. We only take three joss-sticks each. Today we tasted Chinese sweets. We tasted lotus nuts, lotus roots, preserved kumquats and melon seeds. The lotus nuts were scrumptious, they tasted sweet on the outside and sort of crunchy in the inside. The lotus nuts tasted like mango. The preserved kumquats were unusual and the melon seeds tasted tangy, dry and bland. Lotus nuts are spherical, lotus roots are round. Preserved kumquats are spherical and melon seeds are oval. Lotus nuts mean hope to have sons, lotus roots mean good luck all year, preserved kumquats mean good health in all seasons and melon seeds mean lots of money . Louise James My table had melon seeds. First we wrote the meaning which is much money and then we did the shape. The shape was oval, the taste of mine was dry, bitter and icky-pooh. The next was preserved Kumquats and the next was lotus root and lotus nuts . My best one, even though you can see I did not like it very much, was melon seeds. I did not want to taste them again. If we have to do it again I hope we do it with chocolate. Oh! I forgot to tell you we did it for Chinese New Year. Leonie Roberts In the play I was mother, I had to lay the table and prepare the food. When I checked the places I had to count out how many people in the family were coming and how many guests were coming. I had to lay a place for my father who had died because we always remember our ancestors on New Year's Eve. At New Year's Eve I, and my own family had dinner together, we had dried oysters and they were very yummy and we had a dish with vegetables with no meat in it. Every night he had a ghastly , frightening nightmare. His guards begged to go into his room to keep the evil spirits away. That night the emperor slept soundly. He decided that instead of having his guards in his room, he ordered some pictures of them in full armour to be put on the door. Every night after that he slept soundly. Soon everybody in the castle had them. After a while they spread all over China until now. Gavin Ramsey Hello I'm a Chinese lady I am in this market for a reason . I am buying special food for Chinese New Year. Lettuce will bring Chinese people expanding wealth, in Chinese it's called sung-choi. We also drink wine for merriment. Dried oysters bring good fortune and wealth. There is also some food called fut-choi and kum. Fut-choi is a vegetable and means growing prosperity and kum is an orange, it means gold and Chinese people eat this on New Year's Eve. Also we decorate our homes with flowers some of them are dahlias and chrysanthemums. They are normally red for good luck and yellow for money. We also have gladioli and white jonquils. We went to the classroom and then we got dressed for our assembly and got into our starting positions. Oh no, the bell rang. Class 4 came in and then all the other classes and my mummy and daddy came in. Then we were singing. Oh no it's my turn! My stomach turned upside down, I did not want to look at my mummy and daddy because I was nervous and scared. My turn now, I have to remember my words. Oh good I remembered my words. I said them with no worries but I am sad because it's all over. Megan Banigan Ten o'clock arrived , the bell rang. The parents came in, they sat down , five more classes came in. Our play began. I felt very nervous. It came to my part. I went on, I felt sick. I didn't look at my mum and my uncle because I would laugh out loud. Amanda Butt Assembly Thoughts It's our play today on the 14th of January , 1987 , our play was called, "Ma(s Stinky Week" , well, lets get on to the story. First we start with the mistakes part, it's really funny, I'll give you an example. Ruth says, "I'm stuck", and then Mrs. Viney says, (Chris is Mrs. Viney in the play), "You've got enough glue there to sink a battle ship". Then the Max 's Stinky Week part comes, there's Max, he's the nicest maggot and there's a horrible wizard called Margomell, but the maggots called him Margosmell because he smells horrible. Well , the maggots got to work at once Then Max says I forgot something,'and then Max takes a plate full of cream and throws it from out of the window and SPLASH it went right on Margosmell's face, and also they were lucky because they didn ' t have to put pegs over their noses any more. Natalie Bohmer Crazy Play The job I've got was to be a maggot. This was the first time I've done assembly and it was the funniest assembly that I thought of, and I was very excited when we started the practice. We chose 'Max's Stinky Week', because it was the funniest and it needed many people. When I was in the play I thought that the cream on Manuel's face was the funniest. When I saw that I could not stop laughing. When we finished the play Mrs. Viney put a plate over our faces which was full of cream. I laughed and laughed until my stomach had a pain. Soon, the pain was gone but when I think of that I laugh again and again. I will tell my Mum about this CRAZY PLAY! His greatest medal is the one he won for his most wonderful success. If you want to find out about it you had better read, 'The Day of Darkness'. The medal is gold with a huge sun on it and on the other side it says 'For making the sun come alight when it had been out for a whole day'. After that Tom decided to leave the Marines because John was leaving the Secret Service to become a pilot. Tom thought he would do likewise . We all wrote a book and my best person is Andrew Blogs. He and his friend want to try and get to the moon but they got attacked and went off course and they were heading for Mars. Their landing was o.k. They tried to fix the engine and they fixed it. They tried to take off and they saw the space patrol and they went home. Their ship was repaired and a week later, they tried to take off, their take off was o.k. and they were ready for another attack. At last they arrived on the moon and they went rock collect ing. Andrew saw a shiny rock in a crater, so Fred lowered him into the crater. When Andrew picked it up it burnt throught the suit and they tried to get back to the U.S.A. Rory Howard Mission Accomplished Michael Jones is a detective. He has black hair his skin is fairly brown. He is kind, but not to criminals. He is strong and is handy with a gun. He always wants a new assignment because he has nothing else to do . He has recently finished a case against a robber who robs him and is working on another case against a murderer who is very tough to beat. Michael is the best detective in the station that's why they put Michael on the murder case. As I've said before, he is finding this case hard to tackle but in his entire career he has never failed , and he is expecting to get this criminal behind bars as well. Manuel Pascua Lord Tom Lord Tom is a highwayman who lived at the beginning of the 18th century. I chose Lord Tom because I know a lot abo ut him. He lived in old London times. He looks tall and magnificent with a patch over one of his eyes. He has a black uniform with a red collar and a black beard and he does not have a family. Lots of exciting adventures happened to him. One of them is that a friend of his , a pick-pocket named Smith , who is twelve years old , one day picks an old man's pocket. Right after that the old man is murdered by two men in brown , which leads both Smith and Lord Tom into an exciting adventure at the end of which Lord Tom dies . Lord Tom is faithful, scheming, kind and good , unpleasant at times and usually boastful. Helen Yates Meg I will describe a character that came from the story called Smith which was written by Leon Garfield. It was set in old London around 1 720. I chose Meg because I liked the way she looked towards Smith and tried to help him. In my mind Meg looked cuddly and quite plump with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her family would probably be a rather soft family , not many worries and very involved. Meg tried to help Smith by getting the document from Mr. Mansfield's study even though she knew it was very wrong to do such a thing. Meg had a very kind heart , she was friendly , loving, generous, kind and mostly lovely . She was very talkative and I would suspect she was very lonely too. Gina Shannon A book we do recommend - to you. Smith His name was Smith, he lived in London in the year I 654. The book is called "Smith" written by the author, Leon Garfield. Smith was dressed in layers and layers of rags with some tom sneakers. He hadn't got a family but he had two sisters called, Miss Fanny and Miss Bridget. Miss Bridget got the clothes from the people who were hanged. She tidied them up and sold them. She was absentminded and didn't care much. Miss Fanny was very dreamy and Lord Tom was her hero. The exciting things that happened to Smith were he pickpocketed a man and found a document. Two men in brown were also after the document. They killed that man who had the document and found he did not have it, because Smith had beaten them to it. And that's what the story is based on , the two men in brown after Smith. Simon Murphy Mr. Mansfield Mr. Mansfield is a magistrate . He lived in London, around 1710. He comes from the book " Smith", written by Leon Garfield. Mr. Mansfield is blind. He became blind in a fire , also in that fire he lost his wife. He only lives with his daughter and Meg the maid. He is quite rich so he has a coach and a coachman. He lives in a Mansion in Vine Street. In the story there are three big parts, Smith, Mr. Mansfield and Lord Tom. The first exciting thing that happened to Mr. Mansfield was when he met Smith. This happened when Mr. Mansfield was walking down an alley and Smith had just walked round the comer and they bumped! The second adventure he had was when he got pulled out of his coach into the snow. The third adventure was when he was in half of a gunfight. It all started when Smith as a pick-pocket picked Mr. Field's pockets. He found a document and that one document led him and Mr. Mansfield into some very big adventures. Anyway , back to the gunfight. The two men in brown ( the men trying to get hold of the document) were coming closer and closer to Smith and Mr. Mansfield with guns in their hands. Then Lord Tom, the highwayman appeared. He shot one of the men in brown , but as the man in brown fell Lord Tom was shot. Christopher Ayres 117 118 Primary Class 16 - Mrs. M. Davies My Granny and Grandpa's Garden GRANNIES,. GARDENS It is a small garden with lots of flowers in it - like snapdragons and sunflowers. In the middle· of their garden , they have a vegetable patch with tomatoes, peas in the pod, carrots, cucumbers- and broad beans. There is also a stone bench at the back of the garden. Behind the bench there is a fence and a gate. The gate leads into a field where sheep live and we like to try and catch them. There are also some big stacks of hay which we climb and play on. Jill , our next door neighbour's dog, comes with us sometimes. Joanna Tschetter A Witch Speaks Out "Hi! I am Goody Goody Gun. I am a witch. One day I was in a bad mood because I got out the wrong side of my bed. Then I fell down the green stairs. I accidently poured toad soup down my nice dress which I bought from the scrap yard shop. Then I lost the keys to the SUPER BROOM and the house. So you can understand why I was in a bad mood. I walked to the King of the Moun tains. I went there to complain to the King and Queen about their six children. They are always playing in my garden. But the King and Queen didn't listen to me. So I kidnapped them and have hidden them in a cave. Then I hid their six children in different places. No one will ever find them." John-Paul Lui AND The Witch Speaks Out "My name is Cricky . I am a witch. People say I am ugly which isn't very kind. I have a cat and a broom stick which flies. I live in a very dirty house. It is very messy with spider webs on the walls. I will hide the children and I will lock up the King and Queen in a cave. I will have to make a plan to catch them so no-one will be able to find them again." Mickie Bohmer My Witch I made a puppet. It is a witch. I used clay, glue and paper to make the head . The witch has a black dress. My Witch is called Svask . My puppet is good. She lives far away in a wood. Markus Berg/ ors ______ WITCHES Review of "Granny's Garden" In the computer program called "Granny's Garden" you and your group have to find the King and Queen of the Mountain's children - all six of them. They have been caught by a very wicked witch and hidden by her. When we started out on the program, we thought we were the greatest - we would crack it sooner than anyone! But we got stopped by the witch again and again! The game got a hold on us and we were grumpy and cross because we could not solve it quickly. But our notes were improving and we really were thinking and so we progressed! The game is great . The beginning is exciting and the end is great but the middle games are very difficult . The game is good for seven year olds or older. You have to be patient, think logically and co-operate with your group. You have to go through the woodcutter's house, the giant's garden, the city of dragons and the land of mystery. Daniel, Anna, Claire, Tom, Esther and Jessica have to be found and only you and your group can find them. Of course other groups can get through all the witch's difficult tricks. But if you really think , you might beat them to it! And solve "Granny's Garden"! Angus Rankin How I Made My Witch Puppet 1. First of all I made a clay ball for the head. Then carefully I made the eyes, the nose , eyebrows and mouth. 2. When I had finished the head I covered it with vaseline. 3. After that I put on four layers of paper and let them dry. The follow ing week I put on another four layers. 4. When the head was dry , Mrs. Davies cut it open with a knife . 5. I took out the clay and joined the head together with more paper. 6. When the head was dry , I painted the face green. I painted the eyes blue, brown eyebrows and a red mouth. I made the eyes blood-shot. 7. I stuck on string for the hair. It was grey and green. 8. I made the hat with a cone-shaped piece of paper and added a brim. 9. To make my witch 's dress , I used black material. I asked my Mummy to help me by sewing it up with a sewing machine. 10. Then I fitted the head into the dress. When our class had finished the puppets we put them all on display. Mine looked very happy . Jane Forsyth l My Granny's Garden My Granny's garden is a small one. It used to have a small plum tree. It used to have a swing attached on to it , but the tree had a disease. So it had to be cut down. The garden has a little lawn. There is wire around it. Behind that are some bushes that have ladybirds on them. My Granny keeps jam jars and marmalade jars and she lets me have some to catch the ladybirds. The garden has a shed. In the corner of the garden is a flower bed. There are roses and other flowers in the flower bed . On the shed there are sweetpeas. My Granny's garden is at the back of the house. Vicky Barker A Witch Speaks Out "Hi! My name is Black Eye Whip the III. I am a witch. I am really very kind to people. I don't know . why they don't like me. I have a pretty, green , warty face but people say that I am so ugly. One day I was out flying on the broomstick and my hair got so messy . So I stopped at the palace of the King and Queen of the Mountains to borrow a brush. But they would not let me borrow one. I was so upset , I kidnapped them and locked them up in a cave. Then I asked the King and Queen's children if I could borrow a brush. I told them that I am very kind to little boys and girls because I give them sweets and toys. But they said I was an ugly old witch. So I locked them up as well but in different places. NO ONE will ever find them! I hear that the children in Class 16 at Kellett School are trying to find them. But they won't succeed. " Eric Ho Review of "Granny's Garden" "Granny's Garden" is about a garden as you can probably guess. It is a computer program. You climb over a wall into a .. ... garden of adventures! The King and Queen of the Mountains have been captured by a very wicked witch. Their children Esther, Tom, Clare, Anna, Daniel and Jessica have been hidden by the witch. You are set with the task of finding the six children. The people in my group were Fiona, Mickie, Aoife and of course, myself. On one of the adven tures (it's divided into four parts) Aoife said something which I didn't entirely understand. We all said, "That isn't right" and didn't listen to her. But it turned out she was right! We blocked our ears when the words, "That was not a good idea" came on the screen because the witch would come on, and send us home . The four adventures on the computer pro gram were - "The Woodcutter's House" , "The Giant's Garden", "The City of Dragons" and last came "The Land of Mystery". It took us several attempts to do the third and fourth adventures. I liked "Granny's Gar den" . It helps children to use a com puter, to spell and helps them co operate with each other. Very curious and Extremely quiet. Aoife Kelly Fiona McGuigan Kellett School Garden The garden was opened in Easter. 1986 by Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Shannon. They both cut a long red ribbon. After the ribbon was cut we all went into the garden to have a look. Mrs. Steer said we would al1 be allowed to plant our own plants in the flower bed. A week after we had all planted our own plants they started to grow. We all came down lots of times to find out if they were growing well. To start off with, they were coming on very nicely , until a group of green caterpillars attacked them by eating the leaves! We got them off, but some of us had a rash from them. I think the garden would be better if we had better soil and grass. The bird table should be looked after regularly. I like the garden when we are allowed to plant seeds, and when we sit down at the tables and do our work or eat our lunch. Chris Marshall Ella Chase Snails Snails are very interesting creatures to observe. Most snails have pretty shells. They are usually brown . Snails are almost like slugs when they are out of their shells. Snails are very slow moving. They like to live on plants in gardens. We brought some snails from the school garden into our class. We put the snails in a glass container. The lid of the container was also a magnifying glass. We looked at the snails through the top. I touched one of the snails. It was a feeling just like jelly. When we touched one of the tentacles, it moved in very suddenly. Some of their shells are shiny and see-through. Most of the snails' shells are curly. They are thick at the bottom and thinner at the top. I think snails are nice animals. Vicky Ca.rter Kellett School Garden The garden at Kellett School was opened last · Easter. We all sang songs. The children in Mrs. Davies class did a dragon dance. Mrs Shannon and Mrs. Carter cut the ribbon leading into the garden. IT WAS OPEN! The little ones went into the garden to plant flowers. We went in after them. The eldest boy and eldest girl in the school planted a tree. It is called the Camel's Foot tree. I like the banyan tree that is in the garden. It's shady and cool if you stand underneath it. I also like the new tables and chairs. There's a bird table at one end of the garden. We planted some radishes. The caterpillars are annoying as they keep eating the leaves of our radishes. If I go into the garden the mosquitoes always bite me. Abigail Osborne Kellett School Garden In Easter 1986, our new garden at Kellett School was opened. There was a red ribbon across the entrance. Mrs. Shannon and Mrs. Carter cut it. There was a big dragon dance. It was done by the children in Mrs. Davies class. Later I planted some radishes. Other children planted thyme or sun flowers or sage. There is a big banyan tree in the garden. It has been there for a long time even before I came to Kellett School. The banyan tree is now inside the garden. I took a picture of the radishes I planted. The banyan tree has lots of roots and vines. There is a bird table in the garden with bird food on it . The garden looks very good but it needs more added to it. Clare Forsyth CJ P • .18 HONG KONG EXPLORERS' WELCOME TO THE EXPLORERS' CLUB It is set in beautiful surroundings where hills tower above you and the sea gently laps against the golden sands. This futuristic building was designed by Foster Associates, the architect responsible for the new Hong Kong Bank headquarters. The golf course is hilly and lake dominated. Tifgreen Bermuda grass is used for the fairways and roughs. The centre of our property is a huge pool where you can idle in the sun. Around the pool we have extensive gardens, containing varied and rare tropical plants. We boast that our library has information on every region of exploration. In the H.K.E . C. we want you to feel the luxury of the place and the rooms are no exception. The climate room was designed to help travellers get used to different climates. When you want to get more time off the ground and in the air, more time off your feet, more time in your seats, just take a cable car from the swimming pool to the lounge or the nature trail. Polar Exploration Monday 16th March We set off. The snow was coming up to our knees. It was getting colder. John slipped. I got out the rope. We were pulling our hardest. We got him out. I listened to his heart beat. It looked as though he was dead. We carried on walking and then decided to camp here. Tuesday 17th Harch. We woke up and had breakfast. We set off, then two hours later we found a set of footprints. We followed them, then we saw some one lying there, dead. We thought that there must be more explorers about. We carried on walking. Peter slipped into an underground cavern. I got the rope. I hammered a piton into the snow. Slowly I went down. He was lying on the snow. I grabbed hold of him and pulled him out. I got the first aid and then we camped the night. Wednesday 18th Harch Now the time had come. I got out the camera and stuck our flag into the snow. We took twenty-one photographs. We went on walking. The blizzard was too strong so we camped for the night. Thursday 19th Harch We couldn't go any further. We ran out of food. We were getting weaker. We couldn't go on. First we are going to take a plane to South Africa. From there we will get another plane to Prince Edward Island and from there take an icebreaker to a Russian base in Antarctica ..•... Wednesday 25th Harch I woke up to the sound of the sail flapping in the wind. I turned around and woke up Ian and Richard. We had some noodles and we were on our way. Our aim for today was to reach the first Russian station. Fortunately our ice boat still worked. On the way there Richard fell off our iceboat. He called for help. I spun around and grabbed his hand. As I pulled him up blood poured out of his leg and his clothes turned a reddish colour. Ian stitched him up. After several hours we reached the Russian station. They let us use their spare beds until morning. Hade good progress except for Richard's injuries. Ricardo /. 129 130 SISSY STROBL AUSTRALIAN SAVANNAH Killer Disease Tuesday 24th March It was so hot and different but the Kookaburras and all the other animals made the place like home. All the stones and bumps were making me get a headache and feel terribly sick in the tummy. The breeze was blowing in my face as we raced across the ground in the sandy coloured jeep. I felt so strange to be in such a different place from Hong Kong. I looked down again and started to read my book. Then suddenly I heard shouts. I got such a fright that I dropped my book and sat up startled. I looked around and saw some Aborigines running after a kangaroo, but I was even more terrified when I saw their spears gleaming in the sunlight. Ali toJd me to get a rifle, so I clambered over the back seat and got out a tranquilizer gun and was ready to shoot. Ali told me to shout to the aborigines and tell them to stop, but they couldn't hear me. I hesitated a bit but I had the right aim and I shot the kangaroo. A loud bang echoed through my head. The kangaroo was lying on the warm dry sand in front of the jeep. It was not infected with the deadly disease. Sissy "EVER TRYING" Australian Mystery The hot air surounded me as the sun beamed down early in the morning on the Australian Desert. Hy legs ached from walking and my feet were burnt from the boiling sand. I was in a place far away from any civilization. There were no tribes of Aborigines and there hadn't been so far. I was just about to give up hope of seeing any people when I felt something sharp touch my back. A shiver of excitement ran down my spine. Slowly I turned around. Behind me was a short dark figure with white stripes on his body, wearing a band around his head and holding a spear. He grabbed me by the shoulder and began pulling me towards a huge sand. dune. I struggled to try and escape but he had a good grip on me. Amy Y GILPIN ORNEO JUNGLE The Bermuda Triangle After half an hour's flying I radioed back to the airport to tell them that I was flying over the Bermuda Triangle. Just then I was driven into thick fog and everything went crazy. The compass swung madly and there were sparks flying everywhc~e. I tried to radio back but somehow we had lost contact. Quickly, I grabbed a life jacket and strapped it on. I opened the cockpit door and jumped. The next minute I was sinking beneath the water. I scrambled to the surface and gasped for air. I looked around me, the helicopter had blown up and parts were drifting everywhere . Beyond that there was nothing but blue ocean. I had never felt this way before. Here I was in the middle of the ocean, helpless. I figured that the only way that I could get back was swim drift, or be rescued. Just th;n something grabbed my legs and was trying desperately to pull me under. I got out my butterfly knife and hacked at it. It was gripping tighter now and I fought for my very life. I gasped for air and spat water as I was continuously pulled under . I gave the thing a powerful blow. It slackened off as a surqe of green swept around me. Patrick MEMBERSHIP AIHE BROADHURST ARCTIC STUDY Arctic Studies Tuesday 24th March The coldness struck through me as I trudged through the snow and ice. My rucksack was heavy and my hair was blowing against my neck. The strain was getting greater as we lurched towards the Eskimo village. Suddenly a sharp sound rang thr·ough the snow mountains. It was Suzanne, she had fallen and was rolling towards an ice canyon. The sound was so great because only the cracking of boots sounded in this lonely place. She was alright, but quite shaken. We reached the Eskimo village after a long time and the people greeted us in a friendly manner. After this day I felt tired. Would we really survive this trip. Jaime In search of the South Pole Dear Samantha, I am writing to tell you of my joy. I have been the first to reach the South Pole. It will take me three months to get back. INTERVIEWS BY Wednesday 25th March. I awoke to the sounds of the Eskimos working. Quickly I glanced down and looked at my watch. It said, 08.35. Realising that I had drastically over slept, I hurried to get dressed. The Eskimos were busy getting our supplies ready, so that we could start right away. Christina was already up and at it when Louisa and I emerged from our tents. We finally started exploring between nine and ten o'clock. Travelling at a speed of about 40 k.p.h. meant that we were making pretty good progress although sometimes we slowed down a little. We were heading for a large snow crevasse. We are now actually camping in the Arctic. My dream came true. It was a great day. Emma Thursday 26th March The cold struck my face as my eyes slowly opened. I got dressed and hurried out of my tent. The other two weren't awake yet, so I was careful to keep quiet as Louisa and Christina needed their sleep. They finally awoke, but we were dawdling because · they didn't want to face the coldness. We crossed the ice crev~~se with great ease and eventually got to where we are now. Although it was cold everything went well. Emma JAMES LAYFIELD QUEST FOR TRUE SOUTH A BOARD Friday 27th Harch. I started walking quite early today as we had seen an escarpment and knew we had to go round it. We lost time because of that but the rest of the day went well. After we had crossed the escarpment it was solid walking until an Eskimo village came in sight. When we got there we set up camp and had an early night. Jaime To whom it may concern. James 131 )32 MYSTERIES SOLVED ---~--~~---······ BEN TYRRELL UEST FOR TRUE SOUTH The Atlantis Triangle •• •• •• •• •• :~ The story that I am about to tell you happened two years ago. The events were so horrific that it has taken me all this time to write it down. The memory sends shivers down my spine even now. It all started one clear summers morning in England. Jake Rockwell, Michael Hughes and myself, Ian Livingstone had been assigned the task of test flying the latest B.A.F. aircraft, test flight number 106. We were all experienced aviators. Michael, my co-pilot had been flying Fl-ll's for a number of years. Jake, our navigator was one of the best that I've flown with. Our route was to take us from R.A.F. Bigginhill to Fort Lauderdale, U.S.A. The first part of our journey went according to plan but we were suddenly jolted into action when we flew into turbulance. We struggled to regain control as the plane plunged towards the sea. The sky and sea turned into a mist of blue and grey. Then I lost consciousness. Ben U.F.O. 's It was a beautiful day and I was walking along the rocks enjoying the sunshine and breeze. Suddenly I realised that the tide had come in and I was trapped on the rocks, it had also started to rain . I was looking to see where I could shelter when I noticed a cave. I decided to climb up to it. When I reached the cave I found a sandy spot and made myself comfortable and waited. Suddenly I was thrown against the wall of the cave unexpectedly. As I looked at the entrance I noticed that a huge boulder had been thrown against it. It was as black as night now. I began to feel dizzy and I almost knew that I was doomed. There was no way out. Suddenly I was sucked through a dark hole. What was to become of me? I started to scream and my voice · echoed. I landed with a crash on the floor. I got up slowly and as I did a herd of U.F.O.'s came firing at me. I covered my eyes as a blinding light shone from above me and I ducked in terror as a magnetic ray came zooming past an inch from my head. I gave a sigh of relief but kept on running. Even more rays fired but luckily they all missed. Eventually they gave up. I noticed a bright light before me, I edged towards it. When I reached it I was amazed at the sight. Joanne LECTURES BY MEMBERS Amazon Adventure 27th March 1987 Dear John and Jim, Hi, how are you? We found the Amazon and we are going to explore it. We found the Indians and we bought a canoe from them and they gave us a guide to help us. How is mother, is she alright? We are going to try and catch a tiger and bring it back to the H.K.E.C. It was fun exploring the jungle. The jungle is dark, I was afraid of the jungle at first because it was so dark that you couldn't see anything. It was hard to valk through the jungle because we had to cut our way through the bushes and trees. It was very hot in the jungle and the mosquitoes were buzzing around my head. The birds and the monkeys were making a lot of noise, it makes the jungle happy. Kevln El Dorado The story I am about to tell you happened about two years ago. I was rowing down the River Amazon when a crocodile appeared. It swam towards me. It was alongside my boat, I started to hit it with my oars. It bit one, then the other, and it pulled them out of my hands. The boat started to spin wildly, round and round it went. After a while the boat came to the shore. I staggered off and got all the radio equipment, then the current pulled the boat away. I tried to call base. There was some static and then the radio went dead. I had a quick sleep. A few hours later I heard some drums, they slowly got louder. I started to tremble. Then I saw some natives. I gulped , turned and fled. The natives shouted, "Stop, come to El Dorado!" I turned and looked. They beckoned to me. I followed a path that was cut ahead. "Are we safe?" I trembled. A native just nodded, I hoped it meant yes. Richard ASCENT OF K2 Exploration Amazonas Thursday 26th March I awoke to the birds singing and to the cool morning breeze. We had a meal of baked beans and milk. We then paddled on in our new ten metre canoes. The water was as motionless as a sheet of glass. Every stroke of our paddles sent up ripples. Then we came across some rapids. We paddled furiously and tried to row across it. We were thrashed about violently and the others were thrown out of the canoe. I reached out and pulled them in. No-one was hurt, but David had lost a paddle. Next we came to a waterfall. We couldn't row for shore because we were too close to the edge. Our only hope was to paddle furiously. We were about to go over when David, Ian and our guide grabbed onto some branches. They clung on tightly to them while our canoe went across and dropped three metres, which was high for a canoe. I gave a whoop of delight as my canoe landed. I rowed ashore where I met the others. A pathetic figure came to us pleading for us to follow him. He took us to a village of people suffering from scurvy. David and Ian wanted to leave the villagers to suffer but I forced them to give them vitamin and orange tablets. Han 133 134 EXPLORATION UNDERTAKEN ALI FERUOI AUSTRALIAN SAVANNAH Himalayan Mystery I was jogging in the Himalayan mountains when suddenly I found some footprints in the snow going towards the left. They looked like the footprints of an ape, but much bigger. They looked like the footprints of a Yeti. I followed them. When I came to the other side of the mountain half a mile away, there stood a Yeti. He turned and glared at me with his sharp teeth pointing out. Suddenly he started running after me. I was scared and I started running back. Just then h~ whistled and a huge crowd of Yetis came running after me. After a while the mountain began to shake. It was an earthquake. There was a huge crack in the mountains and at least ten Yetis fell in the huge gap. There was a small crack under my feet. It became bigger. I tried to run but I slipped. Then I had only one chance to save myself. I took out my hook and threw it as high as I could. It went up and got stuck at one edge of the mountain, that was the only chance. Ali Conquest of Everest Friday 13th November 1963 We have reached the top of Everest!!! The whole of the land is spread out in front of us like a white sheet with bumps in it. This is such a wonderful moment in my life. I am only twenty eight years old and I am so glad that I can see all of this. I have taken enough pictures of wildlife, plants and this view, to fill at least ten photo albums. We are going to climb back down tomorrow morning so that we can be down before the storm comes. Monday 16th November We are half way down and already the blizzard that we hoped would not come, has struck. We are stuck inside our tents and it is getting colder and windier. There is nothing that we can do but wait and see if the storm will clear. Our food is running low. I don't know what I'm going to do to keep us all alive. Tuesday 17th November Weak. ARCTIC STUDY Slopes of Everest '84 My Dear Beloved Stephanie, How are you? I'm fine. I'm nearly at the summit of Everest . It's very cold and the view is wonderful. I can see all the Himalayas. Jack has frostbite so we're getting held up. I'm sure you read the letter I sent to the children so you will know all about the Sherpas. I'm going to visit them again on the way back, if I do get back! - only a joke. I must tell you I've got a Sherpa necklace which will look lovely on you. It's made out of coloured beads. I've also got you an old teapot. The snow is white and slushy, just like when we went to Japan skiing, which was so much fun. I've seen two Yettis which were quite amazing. They were ten times bigger than that ape on "Going Bananas", you know, the programme the kids watch on T.V. I've taken some pictures to show you. I miss you more than anything.
