Kellett Secondary School . . . . . . . . . . . . 144 HIJlll~U It is ten years since I was sitting down to write an introduction to the first edition of the school magazine. Each year, each new edition has recorded a slice of the Kellett history, and when you look at the ten well-worn copies that sit on our library shelf, they provide an exciting record of the school's growth. The magazines, displaying photographs, descriptions, stories, poems and art work, tell the story of our whole school community; every pupil, parent and member of the staff contributes something of him or herself to Kellett, and viewed together they capture some of the atmosphere and ethos of the school. They also provide an opportunity to recognise some of the achievements of the school and individuals. They reflect the day-to-day life in which our children have worked, played and grown and for all of us provide a reminder of special events and activities. Since that first Kellett production, the school has grown in size both in numbers of children and staff and in the extension of the building and facilities we have been able to provide. The curriculum has developed and been extended and the opportunities offered to the children have been increased through the promotion of science and computer studies and the addition of French and a Cantonese club. The children featured in our first magazine ranged from 4 to 9 years old, and went on to complete primary school here and around the world. The oldest, some of whom still visit us regularly, have begun further education or various careers. All the Kellett children are growing and changing on their journey towards maturity and I'm sure all the staff and parents will feel something like the dormouse in the quotation from Lewis Carroll as they face the challenge of nurturing our children as they grow and journey to adulthood. "I wish you wouldn't squeeze so." said the Dormouse, who was sitting next to her. "I can't help it," said Alice very meekly: 'Tm growing." "You've no right to grow here." said the Dormouse. "Don't talk nonsense," said Alice more boldly: "you know you're growing too." I start to get really cross and red. My anger gets higher and higher. Suddenly it comes out. I scream, "Why should I do it your way?" I say it very very loud. Then my mum comes in and says, ·"You sound so rude." So I say, "Zoe tells me what to do. I hate it." I say this in a booming voice. Then I run into my bedroom and plan to run away. Ayesha Copsey I was playing outside with Robbie. When I came back we discovered that my brother was in my room. So we decided to set a trap on him. We put wire around his bed. Then there was a tingle down my spine. I said to Robbie, "We'd better stop." Then my sister said, "What are you doing?" I didn't speak but I got into trouble anyway. I was so mad that I pulled my hair out! Alexander Nichols 108 CROSS! I get mad when Joe comes into my room to ask if he can play my "Game Gear." I say "NO" because he stays on it forever And he won't let me have a go. Then he says, "Please", I know he will tell Mummy So I give up. I let him have a go. When I get mad I feel I am going to blow up. I pull my brother's hair I pull it hard and then try and run away. He grabs my leg. But then it's WAR! Sarah Lunn 109 Journeys The disastrous journey Once upon a time there was a girl called Rebecca. She was leaving to go to camp but she had to go to the bathroom first. The toilet was a Chinese one, and somehow she got her foot stuck in it. At first she thought it was funny. So she called her friend to get someone to help. The teacher came and she twisted and turned her foot but they just couldn't get her foot out. It wasn't so funny now. Then they called in a workman and he brought a big hammer. He managed to get her foot out but it was all bruised and sore. Rebecca never got to camp after all. Natalie Langdon-Wilkins The journey One day when I was three I went to the foot ball stadium and my brother wanted to see all the team. His favourite · player was Steve Bull. When we went ~n to see them, Muchey came out. I went m all by myself and I saw the men get changed. When Steve Bull went out of his changing room I went in and put on his socks and his shirt and his scarf. Then I went out and my Mum and brother looked at me but they didn't recognize me. I wanted to sign my brother's autograph book but Steve Bull recognized me. He picked me up. Then my Mum saw it was me and she said "Let's go into the bar and have a drink." Caroline Hingley Once upon a time there was a boy called Oliver. His boss gave him a mission to recuse a princess. So he set off to rescue her. Not far away he met a Dragon. When we get back Mum shouts, "I need to put the washing on and ring Nana to tell her we're off." I say to myself, "Will we ever get on the journey?" Anna Lewis My friend has a time machine. One day I said to him, "Can I use it?" He said, "yes," so I jumped into it. I was excited by the thought of a journey in a Time machine. But it didn't WORK!!! I went mad when I realized that we were in the same room. I said to Ted, "Let's go outside." But when I got one foot outside I realised that we were in the jungle. I said to Ted, "It DOES work!" We walked through the jungle. We were in the war. I saw the Australian army. When they saw us they said, "Get down." I heard a machine gun go bang, bang. I heard an aeroplane overhead. It was the Light Horsemen. I felt frightened. I thought I'd better go. But I couldn't get back to the time machine. There were some enemies standing at the door of the machine. I asked the Light Horseman, "Can you help me?" He took me back and attacked the enemy. I got a hat from the soldier. I jumped back into the machine. Phew! I got home all right. James McDonald Exploring Indiana Jones was a famous explorer. He explored many countries and cities. He wanted to find the hidden treasure of the sea. So he swam under the water till he came to a treasure island. The dumb thing about the island was that it was so small only an ant could stand on it. So Indiana Jones never got his treasure. Staff an Kjellvestad The bad journey 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, BLAST OFF! We're off into space! "There's such a loud noise," said Adam. Adam was having his birthday party on a rocket. Then some of the fuel went and Adam was worried. He went and got some more fuel and then went back and joined his friends. It was time for the cake, but something happened and the cake fell to the ground. Adam was very mad. He steered the rocket back to Earth and said loudly, "We're back everybody, we're back." So Adam didn't get his party. He went back to his house and cried. Adam Crothers The hero There was a hero - Hero James - in the neighbourhood, in New York, and a witch in No. 71. She was doing a spell and accidentally turned herself into a small hairy monster. She was upset about this . Time went by. The hero James decided he would search for some treasure. When he was on Main Street he saw the monster (which was really the witch) and realised she might have some treasure. The monster travelled to her castle in South Africa to get the treasure. The hero James followed her. It was a long .journey. When they were there the monster saw the hero and they started to dance. The magic wore off the witch and she turned into a nice girl. Then they both lived happily ever after. Sian Jamieson The toilet journey I am a tube of toothpaste and I am rotten. I have been flushed down the toilet. I'm moving fast! I can't stop. "Help! Help! What can I do?" I cry. I come to another pipe. Where does it lead to? Should I go to the left or straight on? I decide to go left. Halfway down I meet someone. "Who is this?" I wonder. Then I realize it's my friend the toothbrush. He was put down the toilet because he had snapped. I was quite pleased to see him. The pipe led us to an opening and there we saw the boy who had owned us. He picked us up and took us home. Robbie Clatworthy Journeys The Fantastic Journey! Once upon a time there was a girl called Jinney. One day Jinney's mother and father took Jinney to a fair! The first thing Jinney wanted to ride on was the hot air balloon! She was riding in the hot air balloon when the rope snapped. She screamed for help. Everybody rushed to see if they could catch the rope but she • was too high. Her mother and father cried all the way home. Meanwhile Jinney was sitting in the balloon basket crying (well she was only 5 and she didn't know that crying got you nowhere). She floated for a week. Then a bird pecked the balloon and down she went to the sight of a familiar land and landed on the roof of her house! She made such a big bump that her mother and father rushed out. She said, "Hi Mummy! Hi Daddy!" And she got down! Her mother -and father were delighted to have her back! Deborah Laurent Once upon a time there was a monster who was really mean. He killed anybody who went near the castle where he lived. The only thing this monster could not do was SPELL. But he was very lonely because there was no one else around. So he decided he would go on a journey around the world to find a playmate. The next day he set out on a boat. He travelled in the boat for three weeks. (He didn't need to eat because he was a monster.) Suddenly he saw an island so he went there. On the island he saw a treasure chest. He put it in his boat and left the island. But the boat started to sink with the weight of the chest. He was going to drown because he could not swim. Then someone grabbed him. It was another monster who had saved his life. Then the tomatoes came! They started throwing bits of potato at them. But what they didn't know was that potato made potatoes stronger and after that the planet was called Tom pot. Jenny Fulton Planet Bozo Some people that live on planet Bozo have a force field around their brains. If you shoot at their brains then missiles will come out of their eyes. They have nine eyes and live on toxic acid. They are as big as planes, can drill under the ground and also fly at the speed of light. Edward Bosher ALIEN PLANETS The alien's planet Once upon a time there was an alien called Garry Barry and he had ears bigger than his head and springs on his feet. He could jump higher than a plane could fly. Also he had a circular head and his body was a rectangle. His feet were really fat and he had no arms. His whole body was controlled by a computer. Justin Bodinner Alien planet The alien planet is very dangerous because it is guarded all around by Mud Monsters on the land and by vultures in the sky which attack and crash ships. The aliens look like this. They have feet on their backs and they juggle thm heads on their hands and they can fly but they are very slow runners. They have a million eyes coming out of their ears, but the rest of their heads only have one eye. T~ey also have tentacles that squirt slime. Instead of fingers there are things that blow fire and they have huge spikes all around their bodies. The aliens eat rat poison and drink liquid plutonium. Chris Muir There was once an alien who lived on the planet Mars. He had four heads and two legs, eight eyes and two hands. One day he went to Earth and he killed all the people he could · find. The next day he called his friends to come to play with him on Earth. When his alien friends got to Earth they wanted to drink the sea. Matthew Martin-Robinson Two girls called Nina and Mary wanted to visit another planet because they thought it was a good idea. They thought that it would be nice to see life somewhere else. They lived near a rocket launching pad so they sneaked into it because they heard on the news that a spaceship was going to a newly discovered planet. They took the wrong door but the security people thought that Nina and Mary were the ones who were going in the rocket. They put the girls in spacesuits and sent them to the planet. When they arrived they went out of the space ship and walked around the planet. Mary was getting tired and she said "Can we rest now?" Nina said "O.K." When they were resting they heard a noise which came closer and closer. Suddenly a monster came out from behind a rock. It drank blood and ate cars. Nina and Mary ran to the space ship and took off and never went back to the planet. Jessica Millar 113 Aliens I have a friend and she lived on the planet Gope. She often comes to see me. She has four eyes, ten feet and she is only one metre tall. One day when she was coming to visit me something happened to her planet. Some horrible monster had taken over the planet Gope. When she got back from my place she found that her house was destroyed. She went to look for a new house and tried to land in the middle of planet Donut. Her spaceship fell down and down until there was a thump. She came out and saw a strange planet that she had never seen before. She quickly flew down to my planet and asked if I had a map of the galaxy. I did and we found out that it was planet Ohno. My friend is 567,000,000,000,000 years old now and the planet is 912,000,000,000,000 years old. Sian Dixon Planet Zagon Once on Planet Zagon there was a monstrous monster. He tore down every house in the town of Sargon. He had two thousand eyes (all popping out!) and fangs two metres long. He was a disgusting sight and his name horrifies you, his name is BOZO! Douglas Bland 114 Space dog One day I went to another planet. I didn't know what it was called. I saw lots of weird people there and they looked like dogs but they didn't bark, they talked. But I saw a real dog that barked. None of the aliens liked the dog so I felt sorry for him. One of the dog people said to take him away. That dog liked me so I took him away and left him in my space ship. I had no more fuel but it was cheap there. It only cost something like 2 or 3 dollars so I bought some. Now the dog and I went back to Earth. I left him in the bushes and the next day I asked my Mum if I could keep him. She said I could, only if I took care of him. He could eat anything with oil in it. I had a rocket with two oxygen tanks and one hundred alien chicks. First I went to the planet Zen and they wanted to buy gas for 50 alien dollars. Next I landed on Earth's moon but there was nobody there so I went to Earth, scared a shopkeeper, looked around and found some Coke. I had run out of fuel so I took some and went back home. Philip Wright Planet Dumpling Once on planet Dumpling there lived Dumpaliens. They were always eating dumplings but suddenly one day there was a whoosh and there was a cousin of King Kong called Lan Chong. He landed right in the middle of planet Dumpling and now it's called planet Donut because he made a gigantic hole right through the planet. Now the Dumpaliens are called Donaleans. When they looked across the universe they saw a planet with a rocket going through the middle of it and they were so disappointed that they had to change the name of their planet because the aliens on the other planet had changed their planet's name into planet Donut because the rocket went through the other planet. The aliens looked like cookies with holes in the middle of them. They were brown with chocolate chips. They also told jokes. They were flat like cookies. The planet is 54400000000000 years old. Zeus is only the tenth planet ever discovered in our solar system. "I found it by accident while studying other planets but when I counted them there were ten", said the professor. "I also hope to find the eleventh:" Nicholas English Hudson wipes out pollution Conservation expert Wood Hudson has just discovered how to melt waste pollution and then make statues out of it. The statues do not stink because when they have hard ened they seal the smell inside them. He can clean highly polluted water using the chemicals FP7 and fluoride. In the movie Rich and Dan are assigned to a mission to arrest a band of Ninjas in Japan. It was very hard for Rich because he had never left America before but Dan has lived in Hong Kong for many years. The hotel where they were assigned to stay was called the Mandarin Oriental in Japan. Daniel Egan 116 FUTURE HEADLINES? Hooper Keynes discovers ancient castle Explorer Richard "Hooper" Keynes has recently found a castle over an acre in area. He found it in the countryside of France when he was making a road there. It is thought to be over 300 years old. The discovery was made under mud, bricks and wood. In two months Japanese tourists were everywhere taking pictures. The explorers were making 500 dollars a week or more. There were even tourist groups in the CASTLE. Richard Keynes Ektander wins gold in olympic gymnastics, Hong Kong, 1997 Miss Caroline Ektander who is only fourteen years old won the gold medal for best female gymnast in the world. She scored a perfect ten points on the bar, another ten on the beam but on her floor routine she si:ieezed and only scored nine point mne. She is one of the youngest gymnasts in the whole world who has ever won the gold medal. Caroline Ektander Georgia Webb discovers a cure for poisons In the outback of Australia Miss Georgia Webb the famous doctor was looking for a cure for snake bites because the Queen was going to die from a snake bite. Georgia Webb found exactly the right medicine to help the Queen. Georgia Webb has become very famous since that day. Georgia Webb Hellings finds live dinosaur One month ago zoologist Ross Hellings found a live dinosaur egg in the Himalayan Mountains. The egg was covered with ice which froze it. When he took it home he placed it near his heater and put in on full blast. After two weeks it hatched and he took it out to his field and left it there for an hour. Next he took it to his heater again and kept it there for a week. The dinosaur is now twelve metres tall and its head is around one metre. The tail is five metres long and it is a plant eating dinosaur. Ross Hellings May invents new security ray There was a jewellery shop robbery yesterday but the owners knew that they had an invisible alarm that the robbers couldn't see or break. They needed only one day before the latest robbery because they rang up Dr Ben May one of the world's most famous scientists. Dr May said he would try to invent something for them. He started working and only took five hours to make his design. Then he went over to the jewellery shop and used his vanishing ray gun and made the alarm. The next night the robbers came and off went the alarm. They were caught very quickly. Dr May was given a trophy. Ben May Headline Johanna Sunden the famous professor has discovered a new animal. It is very small and has two legs. The body of the creature is black with yellow and blue spots. She is deciding what to call the little creature but she is thinking of naming it an arcatry. Johanna Sunden Skinner breaks world record for downhill skiing Skinner won the downhill race in 25 seconds - she breaks the Olympic record but just barely, for Dixon made it in 26 seconds. She won a gold trophy and a medal. It was the first trophy she had won in any Olympic competition. She was very happy and excited. Some other players were not so happy for Fulton took a wipeout and Webb tumbled over Ho. Me an Skinner Dixon breaks ice speed skating record The ice speed record was broken in Wales today by Sian Dixon. She is only 19 years old and Dixon has already won the gold cup and medal for the five mile race. Dixon said after the race, "Oh l never thought that I could win the five mile race. The other competitors all shook Dixon's hand and said, "Well done Sian." Sian Dixon Lambrecht, the famous football star, wins Belgium cup Yesterday Kris Lambrecht aged 18 helped Anderlecht win the Belgium Football Association trophy for 2002. Anderlecht won 12 - 3 on Sunday afternoon and striker Lambrecht scored seven. The game was very hard because Ajax had some really good players but both teams had bad defences and the goalkeepers were worse. The strikers and the left and right wingers were very, very good. He has just turned thirty. His invention works this way. If anything touches the machinery that is harmful to the ozone layer, some doors will open and the machine will blow it out to deep space. · Edward Bosher Scott wins World Cup for England England are the new soccer champions of the world. Their best player in the final was a young man called James "Scotty" Scott. He has just helped England to win the 1999 World Cup and he is only 15 years old. You enter to find yourself in a small hall, it is very dark and the dust is thick on the red, black and white hexagonal titles of the floor. In the middle of the room there is a tall chimney made out of heavy slate. There are black ashes in the hearth where the fire had been. Huge cobwebs block your way. You break through them. On a pink table there are bits of candle wax and tiny pieces of wick. Spiders crawl on the top, their webs catching flies in their silky threads. Just then a huge, grey rat hobbles across the floor, over the hearth rug and under a small round table with a pink table cloth on it. It makes patterns with its feet. The pattern looks like a code. What can it mean? The Lounge You open a big, old, Victorian, oak door. A candle blows out as the door slams. It is dark and you are alone. You trip over and shiver for a moment. It is only a chair. You strugggle through the dark. You feel in your pocket and find a packet of matches. You light the candle and carry it around with you. The furniture is heavy and old and the wall paper is a dusty felt red. The floor is tiled with old Victorian tiles. The window slams with the wind. You can taste the misty air, you see a shadow and jump back. It's only your own. There are shadows everywhere on the wall, they fill the room. You look on the table and see a book. You look at it more closely and see there is a code to crack. 119 The Conservatory You enter the hot humid conservatory that is surrounded by -- · thin silvery cobwebs. You glance at the many green plants, their fres smell fills the air. Suddenly you hear a crunching noise, but it is only a bug scuttling across a fat leaf. Dew drops fall on the brown soil making it damp. In the centre of the room there is a dull, lonely, brown table and two chairs. The sun shines through the stained glass windows and their patterns sparkle on the black and white tiles. There are three doors, one silver, one pink and one purple. There is a note with names of colours on it. What can it mean? The shelves are empty except for a globe with a square crack that makes it look as if it is a hundred years old. There are two dolls on the top of the shelf, a bear and a little rabbit, both of which look extremely old and as if they might fall apart as soon as you touch them. A damp, dusty old ABC book is also on the shelf . There on a table is an ink bottle with a quill pen in it. The feather has almost been eaten away by mites and the ink has evaporated leaving dust that blows away in your hands. A candle is next to a rough wall, the wax is a milky blob and almost as hard as stone. A rocking horse is in the right corner and it creaks slowly as it moves back and forth. There is a crib with no bed covers on it. What was once a green ball can be seen on the floor, its green colour has worn off and is now green dust on the floor. Your eye falls on a group of numbers written on the floor. You wonder what they might mean. The Boiler Room You open the door and you go in. The door slams! You are stuck! You look around. It is very hot and steamy. This must be the boiler room. There are pipes all over the walls and there are two boilers. You hear hisses and gurgles, puffs and pops. You see screws and screw drivers abandoned on the floor. Judging by the leaks and drips not to mention the strange noises coming from the boilers this boiler room is in bad shape. The walls are mouldy and damp, cracked and chipped and paint is even peeling off the ceiling. · You see a key attached to a metal hoop around one of the maze of pipes. Could this be your way out? Which door will it open? Which route~ A 5 or C J ------- ..........:::>' The Cellar As you enter the room you begin to sneeze. As the dust settles you see a razor sharp guillotine, rusty blood can be seen on the tips of the blade. Steel chains hang from the ceiling and cobwebs hang between them. A gallows hangs poised for action. Drips of dried blood can be seen on the floor. As you step forward a rat scuttles across the floor and dashes into a rat hole. You put your eye to the hole and nearly blind yourself on a cobweb. It feels cold, freezing cold. In the hole you see a crumpled piece of paper. You smooth it out and see a strange story. Wh can it mean? The Curio Room The heavy doors of the curio room shut behind you. You look around in amazement! The room is U.5./\. packed. Full of interesting and • . ~ different things. The walls are covered with wood panelling. There is a huge portrait of an old lady, with golden hair and wearing a golden dress, in a golden frame. • A little light, from a grimy window shines on the portrait and on The Library the floor which is covered with red and black floor tiles. The heavy, carved door creaks open and you find yourself in a dusty library. The room is lit by a dim lamp and the only sound you can hear is the tick of a clock. The smell of musty books reaches your nose. You back away and the dust rises from the floor. You creep up to the book shelf. It is covered with cobwebs. You open a book and to your surprise it is a book about explorers. You read for a minute and turn around to see a hairy spider. You run to the middle of the room where you bump into a table and chairs. Keeping your eyes fixed on the spider, you circle until you bump into a stained glass window. Under it there is a small table. On the table there is a writing book, a pot full of ink and a quill, scrolls and writing paper. 121 The Tower You have just entered the tower. The dust in the air swirls around you a bit and settles down to reveal a wooden staircase up, and two doors, one to the east and one to the west. You climb the stairs breaking through all the cobwebs. You reach the top and find yourself in a little room and you look around. There is a book on the table called "Cobweb Court". There is some mould on the floor and you slip against an old grey chest. When you get up you bang your head on a big, brass bell. You crawl to the window to get some light and you notice a piece of paper hanging from the ledge. You read what is written on it. There is a riddle that you have to solve .. . 122 lt The Kitchen The wind gusts into the room as you open the door and push through the cobwebs. The dust slowly settles down on the table. You see the cutlery is red and rusty. The cooking range could do with a scrub. The tap has drips coming out from the spout. Each time the tap drips it gives you a little fright. The cupboards have little holes in them and you wonder if something is going to look out of the 'holes at you! You see something blowing about on the floor stirred by the wind. We were in front of all the others. Our teacher told us to do a rising trot around the paddock. Afterwards, we did a sitting trot. I got a cramp as I went bump, bump, bump. I like rising trot better than sitting trot. Next we had to canter. I canter very well. Finally we did bareback. The only problem with bareback is it hurts as my horse's spine goes up my bottom! Horse riding is my favourite hobby. ~ ~ The P.E. Lesson Ginny Hargreaves l ✓ "Oh no! I've forgotten my P.E. kit. What am I going to say when she sees me?" I groaned. The time came to go into the hall. I saw great big flame balls in her eyes. "REMEMBER! DON'T FORGET IT NEXT TIME!" I felt ashamed. I was sure everyone was laughing at me. "I'll give you one more chance," said Mrs Pujol. "Phew!" I said to myself. Anyway, my team won the game. So the P.E. lesson wasn't so bad, after all! Cass Leung Sports Gymnastics We all ran into the hall feeling happy because we were going to have P.E. with Mrs Pujol. I was hoping we would be doing gymnastics. "Stop running and sit down," said Mrs Pujol. She told us that we would be working on the apparatus. "Hurray!" everyone screamed. Mrs Pujol put us into groups. My group was working on the box first. We worked for a long time. Then we showed Mrs Pujol and the rest of the class some of the things we had been practising. I did a somersault and my friends clapped. Victoria did a bridge. We clapped again. At the end of the lesson, Mrs Davies came in to collect us. We said, "Goodbye," to Mrs Pujol and left the hall. Genevieve O'Neill The Tennis Lesson After a forty-five minute lesson of violin, my neck was tired. Now I had to play tennis for one hour! I felt too tired to play but I had to go. My racket was difficult to balance in my hand as it seemed so heavy. At first I missed many of the balls. Daniel was doing better than I was. Later on in the lesson I was feeling more powerful and was able to hit all the balls over the net. My T-shirt was soaking and my hair was dripping. When the lesson was over, I wanted to play some more! Philip Ho Diving Championship It was time for the competition. Everyone was feeling tense. A shaky feeling went down my spine and my knees were knocking as we lined up to dive. It was my turn! I walked gracefully (I hoped) to the end of the board. "Pretend there is no-one watching you," I said to myself trying to keep calm. I stood in position and dived. I didn't win anything, but it doesn't matter just as long as you have fun, does it? Lauren Crothers ,_ - Kick Ball Oh! It's not fair! The yellow team is always winning. I wish my team could win for just one time. The blues had to kick first and the yellows had to field. I couldn't believe my eyes when we all got around on our turns. I pinched myself to see if I was dreaming but I wasn't! We had scored 83 points. That was a record. When it was the yellows' turn to kick, half of their team got round. Their total score was 72. We had won! I think we showed those yellows - don't you? I got the ball again and passed it to Mark. He ran forwards but was tripped and the other team got the ball. As they passed the ball, they dropped it. I jumped onto the ball. Another try! 3-0. "TIME OUT" We'd won! Alexander Berglund Down The Hill! Peter and I were racing down the hill at 100 mph on our skateboards. He was in front. I was trying to catch up with him but Peter kept ahead. As I was pushing hard with my hands, the fingers on my right hand got stuck in the wheel. I jumped up and screamed. Peter took me inside and got me an ice cube. After that my fingers went purple but I did not have to do any handwriting at school the next day! James Blackley 125 126 My First Trophy I had just got home when my mum came into my room holding the trophy! "Where did you get that from?" I asked. 11 Y our soccer instructor rang up because we hadn't collected it;" said mum. "He told me that everyone who has played really well got one. " I was amazed! My team played every Sunday and practised every Saturday. We had won a few matches, drawn most and only lost one. I had been playing for six months. Tilenka Thynne On Roller Skates I can go really fast on my roller skates. I go out on them almost every day. I hardly fall any more but once I got a big cut on my leg. Often, I hold onto my sister's bike and she pulls me around the playground where we live. My sister can skate but not as well as I can - she's only a beginner. My friend and I have races but she always wins because she's older. I really enjoy roller skating. Victoria Kinmond Roller Skating As I staggered up the last flight of stairs, I heard the door slam. It made me jump! I quickly climbed up the last two steps and started to roller skate around the basketball court. Then I thought I heard something. I turned around. Although it was nothing, I didn't look where I was going .... "WAAAAH!" I tripped over a rock and cut my knee. There was blood all over it. I took off my skates and limped back home. Go!" Soon we have two people on our bench but the other team still has only one. "Don't make such a noise! You can see Mrs Ayres is trying to talk on the phone. Shhh!" We start the game again. The person on the other team catches the ball but falls off the bench. "Don't moan. Get on with the ·game!" We are still winning. "Come on, Rupert. Catch the ball." It turned left and landed in the gutter. Angrily, she walked back and took another ball. Again she ran up and threw the ball. This time it turned right, then left and eventually knocked one pin down. The other team batted first and then it was our tum. When it was my turn to bat, everyone was telling me to hit it "good" because the other team was winning 2-0. Mrs Pujol threw the ball at me and I missed it! Everybody groaned. Next it was Armi's tum. She whacked the ball and scored a rounder. It was 2-1 now, so we were catching up on them. Rosie went next. She also whacked it. The score was 2 all. We had one more player to go. It was Ginny. She hit the ball and scored another rounder. It was 3-2 to my team. "YEAH!" we all shouted. They've got cockroaches in the fried rice and all the other dishes are leftovers. Transport! You have to take public buses! If you think that's bad well think of this. We limped to the left and carried on walking. A dog sat before us, its eyes glued on Jennifer. We just kept on walking, not noticing it until it leaped towards us ripping our clothes to shreds. "RUN!" we all screamed. We fled off towards the housing estate until we could run no longer. We scanned the view around us looking for the vicious dog, it was out of sight. "LOOK!" Jennifer squealed, pointing to a group of children, "We've found them!" We rushed to them. Mrs Coultous was staring at us with stern eyes, hands on hips, her bony finger pointing us to the back of the line. Suddenly I heard a voice say, "Line up and we will go to eat". "Oh good" I said opening my eyes widely. We got to the B.B.Q. and sat in groups. The boys in my group were quite naughty. They burped almost all the time and I think that is sick. "Rebecca's group, it is your tum to come and get something to eat", we heard Mrs McDonald calling out. I got some hamburger, slices of tomato and sausage. We all weHt back and sat down. I started eating my tomato and my hamburger. They were delicious, Mr Marshall is an excellent cook. Next my sausage but, ... oh no I couldn't finish it. My tummy started hurting and I felt as if I were still hungry, but I couldn't eat anything. I went to Mrs Nelson and told her all about it. · She said to me~ "Why don't you have some Coke - it will help you burp." I took some and went back to join my group. I heard the boys still burping, so I said to Rebecca that I wished I was one of those boys because I needed to burp. I felt so horrible, tears came into my eyes and fell onto my shirt, wetting it. I also felt like screaming so loudly that everybody would be able to hear me. I then saw Mrs Clatworthy giving out marshmallows to the groups. When she arrived at our group she asked me if I wanted any and I said, "No thanks", because I couldn't eat any. I looked around and watched everybody eating and enjoying themselves and I felt sorry for myself. I was the only one without any. "Well well" I said, "I can't help it." At last I finished drinking my Coke, I waited a little while ... Then all of a sudden there was a stirring in my stomach, and then before I knew anything about it - "BUUUUUUURP!" Peoples' glasses broke, the cows all ran away, Mr Marshall fell to the ground in a state of shock! I had burped! I then felt much better and happier. I was one of the happiest girls on earth. (Maybe not quite the happiest, because I didn't have any marshmallows. But at least I felt much better.) It was hung high, his thin body curling furiously because he had been thrown into the corner. A man who worked in the hostel came in armed with chopsticks and an empty bottle. He stepped on it and put it into the bottle. Everyone was glad when it was gone, but could we sleep in peace? Daniel Andrew -- The view from the mountain top was spectacular I could see the beautiful sunset behind the trees and horizon. The sun was now as bright as the moon, a cloud floated across. I could see rays of light shining through the cloud, just like a light house with a bright red light like a red rose that has just blossomed. I could see the whole forest in front as the breeze slowly swished the leaves. "Such a beautiful world", I said to myself. Just then a whole flock of birds flew past covering the ground with dark shades. They were sparrows. It felt as if I could see everything, everything in the world. Christopher is in his final year at South Island School in Hong Kong where he is Head Boy. He hopes to go to a British university after "A" levels this summer to study engineering. In the years since he was a 11 Kellett pupil he has enjoyed a wide range of interests and activities, including cycling, triathlons, sailing, scuba diving, technical involvement in stage and drama productions, both at school and in some of Hong Kong's professional venues, computing and both building and pedalling karts in the annual Pedal Kart race. I was in Primary Six at Kellett in the "Year of '85". Best wishes to you all! Christopher Wiltshire I am now in my second year at St. Andrews University, Scotland, studying English, French and Scottish History. I somehow managed to come first in English last year so I'll be ending up with a degree in English. Looking back, perhaps the most memorable thing about Kellett for the people in my year is that it grew as we did, only becoming a full school when we reached Primary VI. Leaving Kellett was the first time we weren't the oldest year in the school. After finishin g my primary education at Kellett School in 1984, I joined Holmewood House, a prep school in England. I completed my secondary and Six Form education at Charterhouse a year ago. I am now . studying Physics at the Imperial College. Some of my former Kellett classmates also live in London and we occasionally meet to catch up on everyone's progress. I also enjoy classical piano music, playing tennis and chess. I can still remember visiting the empty site where Kellett School now stands, and moving in from our old premises with some classrooms still unfinished. It has certainly changed since we left. t Kate Macleod Patrick Cheung My name is Audrey Clerc-Renaud. This name may be familiar to some of you because of my young brother Benji now in Primary 3. I left Kellett 6 years ago for Island School where I am still studying . This Lower 6th Year has allowed me to participate in the school's life in various ways: I was elected 1st Form Link which gave me the opportunity to go to camp with the 1st Formers, and I was nominated House Prefect which gave me the authority to speak as a teacher to younger students. I have been involved in the "Islander" committee to produce our school yearbook, similar to the Kellett Magazine, and I am now helping to organize our school fair which will take place in April. There is a lot of charity involvement in Island School: I recently took part in the "Cambodia Evening" which raised money for the transport of artificial limbs to Cambodia, and my class is preparing a "Valentine Delivery Service" for the benefit of Oxfam. I am pleased to say that after having started the Dute and singing at Kellett, I am now part of the Island School orchestra and choir. The hockey I used to practise for P.E. on Kellett's playground I now play in large pitches against other schools. I was in the B'grade this year and we managed to come 2nd in our division. I'm always happy to have news from Kellett as it has been a memorable part of my childhood. So "Stay ace. Stay cool. You belong to Kellett School". Alexandra Dunnett went to Benenden in Kent at the age of 11 having completed 5 happy and well prepared years at Kellett. She has now completed almost 5 years at Benenden and will be sitting 9 subjects at GCSE this summer. She has decided that 5 years is long enough in one place and will go to Cranleigh, a boys Public School for her Sixth Form studies. Cranleigh has over 80 girls in the Sixth Form and she is contemplating taking Economics, Geography and Politics for A Level. In the sporting field, Alexandra has excelled at swimming being the captain of year twice and in the school team throughout. One year she raised nearly STGS00 on a sponsored swim for Multiple Sclerosis. Obviously Benenden has a full range of all sorts of activities in most of which Alexandra has participated (piano, drama, etc.) but memorable are the termly "dormie feasts" held late at night towards the end of term at which vast quantities of junk food are consumed frequently ending in food fights. Clearly social eating is a feature of life as Alexandra recently co-hosted a dinner party of sixteen with friends from school plus sundry boys whom they knew. Alexandra usually manages to meet up with some old friends from Kellett during the schCY'' ~days. I am now in the 4th form at Island School --\. ~ 't, and have just started my G.C.S.E's. I play football )- for my school and hockey for the Colt's A. My life has been influenced enormously by Kellett School and there were many things I enjoyed: Cubs, The Huan, P.E., and lessons with Mrs. Coultous, to name a few. I wouldn't want to go back to Kellett because there's much more to do at Island School and it's much more challenging, I guess. Chris Ayres Tamsin Lee left Kellett in June 1989, after 2 very happy years. She then completed 2 years and 1 term at South Island School. She started boarding school at "Abbotsleigh School in Sydney, Australia, in January this year. She seems to have settled in well and is enjoying most aspects of her new school - apart from the meals - commonly known amongst the boarders as "chew and spew"! Unable to play sports for the past six months due to a badly broken leg, the result of a skiing accident, she is looking forward to taking up basketball and badminton, 2 sports new to her. She has very fond memories of Kellett and loves hearing all the school news via her younger sister, Melissa, and Mum. Sophie Corstin was at Kellett School from Reception to Primary Six. She now goes to Parsons Mead School in Ashtead, Surrey - it is a girls school with 500 pupils. She has joined the Maths, Art and Young Engineers club where they are making door-bells. Her interests include dancing, speech and drama, singing and swimming. She still misses Hong Kong - the weather in UK is not good - but is settling into life in England very well. My name is Peter and I am now 12 years old and was in Kellett 6th grade with Mr Marshall from 1989 - 1990. I have been at H.K.I.S. for 2 years and I am enjoying it. I play football and basketball and do cross-country running. I made the school team in the interschool championships. I also play a lot of squash and was runner-up in the Hong Kong Open Under 13 Plate Event. At school we have everything on computer, atlas, encyclopedia, positions of books in the library and even a bible. This we don't need so much as we have a guy in our religion class who is capable of reciting the Bible! This year our grade is going to China. I will be spending a week travelling by bike through southern China. Peter Blockey . . .
