Looking at all aspects of our lives and Hong Kong's development, I am sure we all see this aspect as one that brings with it great challenge and one that adds to the excitement of living in this community. Kellett School is part of this constantly changing scene and we, the Board, the staff, the children and their families, all reflect the many facets that this change and evolution brings. · We can look back at the changes in our building, our curriculum, the life of our school, and we can look at the people involved in bringing these about. We can look at our present school population and value what each individual brings to the w1'ole. We can tum bac,k to the first page of our magazines and see all the people who spend their days together working in our building - "being Kellett School" - and for every smiling face, pick up individual strengths and enjoy what each brings to share in our school community. Inevitably, al the end of a school year we bid some people farewell and of course we have been involved in plans to welcome new families and their children for the coming year. While we wish those departing every future joy I would like to make special mention of Fionna, Lady Macleod, who leaves us at the end of this school year. Fionna' s involvement with the school began even before Kellett did. She belonged to the original group of parents who together created the school from its early beginnings as a small pre-school group initially opening with just 36 children in Wanchai. She has continued her involvement: through being a parent to two of our first pupils, being a member of the first Parents ' Committee, by being elected to the first Board of Governors, by acting as secretary to the Board (continuously from its inception), by managing the Debenture scheme, and later by joining the staff as Bursar in 1984. Her commitment spans the last 19 years and is one which stands out above all other in the history of Kellett School. Everyone reading this magazine will know Fionna or Mrs Macleod in one of the many hats she wears as School Bursar; she is always busy - be it with a sick child, a visiting prospective parent or investing the schools funds, writing Board minutes on the fancy computer, organising the budget or fixing a broken cistern. The children know she is there to help no matter what the query and is a fund of information on every aspect of the school. The school would not be the place it is without her contributions, commitment and care and when we bid her farewell she will not only take with her all our thanks and appreciation but also a very special part of Kellett School. Hong Kong, Kellett and our lives will continue to evolve and life within our walls will always be focused on offering our children the very best education. We would like to pay the greatest possible tribute to Fionna and acknowledge the enormous part she has played in the creation of Kellett School. I would like to thank Fionna, on behalf of the Board, for so many things. Our meetings don't actually start until she arrives - although she is rarely late and has never missed a Board meeting in the history of Kellett School. With her first-hand and unequalled knowledge, she instils a sense of purpose, order, and common sense, as well as a great deal of humour to the Board's work. I know I speak for all of us when I say she will be sorely missed. We wish her all the very best for the future. I am sure we will remain in contact, which we welcome, but hope that it does not impinge too much upon her plans. Thanks for everything, Fionna. She makes the practice sessions lots of fun although the best times are when we actually have to put our skills into practice against other schools. We have played Kennedy several times and beaten them and had some close matches against Glenealy, Peak and Bradbury. The best part of the term was playing at St. George 's Tournament. The team played well, just missing going through to the semi-finals by 1 goal!! The following week 3 P6 ' s represented HK against Kowloon schools. A big thank you to Miss Goddard from all the team for coaching us so well and making each session fun . Netball is fun. why don ' t you try it? We practice with Mrs Cooper on Tuesday ' s and we have played a lot of matches this year against different ESF schools. We have won some and lost some but we've enjoyed them all. Thank you to Mrs Cooper for all her hard work and Miss Goddard for organizing the matches. Chiara, Nicola & Jenny The soccer team consists of 7 - 10 players from P5 and P6. The soccer team has played in lots of tournaments - ESF, The Football Club, Hong Lok Yuen and Sai Kung. At Hong Lok Yuen we got into the quarter final against Bradbury 'A' team. We went into extra time but at the end of extra time Bradbury scored so unfortunately we were knocked out. In the next tournament we weren ' t so lucky. The soccer team has had a fun and competitive year. We say thank you to Mr Nevin for his excellent coaching. The rugby team this year is made up of P5 's and P6's. Ten people play in the team with two reserves. We have played six matches against ESF schools at So Kon Po sports ground and we have won three and lost three. The games have been tough and competitive but we've had fun . On the 1st April five P6 ' s will be representing HK against Kowloon for the 'Mike Peat Trophy" at Sandy Bay. James Forster I think the best place for you to go in Hong Kong is to Ocean Park. There are many different rides there but the best ride is the Raging River ... (A raging river is water that moves along because of the strong current) . First you get into the boat and it moves along very slowly in a straight line but then it reaches the end and goes downhill . When you get to the bottom, water splashes you and you get a bit wet. It is very good fun when you get splashed. Whenever I get off at the end I always want to go on again. Emma Budge Hong Kong is a very busy place and it is busy in Pokfulam where I live. We can either go to Central by China Motor Bus and go to a cinema in Pacific Place to see a film or I can take you to Wah Fu to Kellett School. It has lots of kids and you can meet my friends . You can get there by taxi . As you are an Alien no-one will mind if you don't pay and my Mummy said it's all right to bring you to the Club. The Boat Club is a place where you can eat and drink. My best food is chicken curry and you might like to drink a milkshake. The flavours are chocolate, strawberry or banana. It is quite small. There are lots of islands round it and I've been to some of them. I've been to Lantau on a junk. It is the biggest island but not many people live there. It doesn't have any tall buildings. There are lots of restaurants and shops. We walked to a restaurant from the junk and then we went to a beach. It is flat by the beach and there are mountains. I've been to Lamma, the nearest island to Hong Kong. We went to the Pigeon Restaurant. We saw Chris Patten having pigeon there. Lamma is smaller than Hong Kong Island. It has no tall buildings, it has small buildings and shops. It has a beach too. All the Threes go to camp on Cheung Chau. That's another island. I think it will be good. Katherine Harvey-Kelly 98 Times Square In Hong Kong there are lots of tall buildings. My favourite building is Times Square. There are three towers, the shopping and restaurants tower, the Shell Tower and the NatWest Tower where my Mummy works. Times Square is in Causeway Bay. It has glass lifts. I like going up high but I feel like we will fall when we come down. My Mummy used to work on a high floor. Sometimes I used to visit her and I really liked the meeting room because there was a white board to draw on. My favourite restaurant there is Shooters because that is where I have my favourite sundae. It is about 27 centimetres tall . The first time I had it I thought it would be quite small . I was very surprised when it came. Oliver was jealous. It has vanilla ice cream, nuts, a strawberry, cream, chocolate sauce and jam. It's delicious. It's scrumptious. Cordelia Witton Bank of China I really like the buildings in Hong Kong. My favourite building is the Bank of China. I visited it with my Mum then I painted a big picture of it. I am going to take it to the Bank of China. I have already taken my night sketch of the Bank of China and they thought that it was the best one they had ever seen. They seemed like they were about to faint. It is a very awkward building to draw because of all the triangles. They are in odd positions. I have been inside the building to the seventieth floor. That's the top . You can look through the windows in the roof and see the spires. They are really big. You can look down and the cars look like matchboxes and you can see the reclamation and the new bridge from Lantau to Kowloon. Timothy Cooper More views •••••••••• Our Peak Walk We saw spiders ' webs but I only saw one spider. A little way round there was a gap in the trees and we saw a spectacular view. I could see Central Plaza, the new land they are building and Kowloon . We walked a bit more and right next to us was a steep cliff. A bit farther on I started to feel tired but eventually we go to the playground . We had our packed lunch and then we played a rugby game with a stick. I liked that. Then it was time to walk again. It was hot. We passed some exercise activities . We came to another spectacular view. This time it was Lamma Island, a car ferry, sailing boats and container ships . We went into the Peak Gallery and Mrs Chan bought us an ice cream. When we came out everyone was crowding round the fountain getting soaked . I liked the trip a lot. The Peak Tram We all bought a return ticket. I put it into my lunch bag so that it did not get lost. Then we waited for the tram. We had to stand behind the yellow line. When it came, it came down a steep hill . It was very quiet. The driver walked through the tram to the end so he could be at the front of the tram for the next journey. The tram was maroon and gold on the outside. The seats were wooden and the floor was bumpy so no one would slip on the steep bit of the trip . There were only two carriages. When it started to go up the gravity pushed me back against the seat. I couldn't lean forwards . The tram stopped at four stops. The stations were just a little shelter. We could see lots of buildings. I saw the Bank of China where my Daddy works. I liked going on the tram. It was the first time I had even Daniel Brooks-Reid been on it. ¼~ -- -=1~~· / ( Helen Sweeney Old Hong Kong Old Hong Kong is not nearly the same as Hong Kong is now. There were no buses, no cars and the people did not even have any shoes. The only transport was old fashioned trams, rickshaws and sedan chairs. You know what it is like going up to the Peak now. You go en the tram. When the peak tram was first made, monkeys used to live in the trees round the track. They jumped on the roof and peered through the windows and the people looked back in astonishment! Before the tram was invented rich people were carried up the hill in sedan chairs. Four people carried the chair and it took a very long time. I would love to be in the old days so I could wear a long dress. Louise Roden The Fountain on the Peak We came to it at the end of our walk after we finished in the shopping mall. We weren't paying any attention at first. Then all · of a sudden SPLASH SPLISH! It had started. We all ran over to stand near it. The water shot up from lots of holes in the marble. Sometimes it goes high and sometimes it goes low. Sometimes it goes in a circle. Sometimes it goes diagonally. Sometimes it bounces up and down like a ball. Nearly everybody wanted to get ~~ wet but I didn ' t. Most people were houting and laughing because they were excited. Then it stopped as suddenly as it started. We all thought it was over. Then one . little squirt of water popped up and it started again! It was fabulous . Sarah Clayton 99 Our Assembly About Hong Kong I liked doing it. I started it off. I had to hold up the letter H and say, "H is for Hong Kong Bank." Other people held up other letters. We shuffied around twice and made the words HONG KONG. We gave Timothy paint pots to pretend to paint a picture of Hong Kong. Stefanie threw litter around and we all showed our badges for our campaign to Keep Hong Kong Tidy. My badge said, "I DO NOT DROP LITTER". Nicola Long-Price Our Hong Kong Assembly We started about three weeks before our assembly. We were going to talk about Hong Kong and litter. Mrs Finnie fixed up a bag so we could collect rubbish . Soon we had a full bag. Then we started to make a huge picture. Everybody had to do something. First we painted the sea, the mountains, the sky and flowers . Then everybody made a building. I made the Lippo Tower and Central Plaza. We stuck our buildings on to the picture. It was excellent. We all made big badges about keeping Hong Kong clean. On my badge I said, "I put litter in its place." Then it happened. It was the day. I was feeling a bit nervous. I had to say eleven words and at the end Timmy and I held up the picture. It turned out a success. Nicholas Owen 100 We went to Causeway Bay station to take the MTR. I had been on the MTR before. We bought our ticket from a machine. It cost $3. Then we put it into a machine. It came out at the top and we could get through the bar. We went down a long escalator. I like escalators. We stood on the platform behind the yellow line so that we couldn't fall down to the track! We heard the train coming. It's grey. The doors opened and we got on. The seats were slippery. They were metal. You could hold on to the bars. The train went very fast. It goes underground so it's all black outside the windows. It stopped at lots of stations. A lady tells you which stop it is. We got off the MTR at the last stop at Sheung Wan. I like going on the MTR. Marjolein van Bommell Traffic In Hong Kong there is lots of traffic. I hate cars and buses because of all the fumes that come from them. The air is getting polluted and it makes us cough. But we need our cars to take us to school and to the ferries . It is dangerous to cross the road when cars are coming because you might get killed. The safest place to cross is at a zebra crossing. You have to wait till the green man lights up. When the red man is lit up you should not cross. In some places where there is lots of traffic there are bridges for people to cross over the traffic. Nicholas Cole t Wah Fu When we went on the walk around Wah Fu, I chose Jamie as my partner. Mum came too. We passed the Post Office, Police Station and shops. As my group approached the market Mummy said, "What can you smell?" I could smell fish and raw meat. When we went into the market I saw dead fish, live fish in tanks and some flopping about on the chopping board. We saw crabs with string around their claws so that they couldn't nip anybody, lobsters, shrimps and lots more. Mum pointed out live chickens in cages ready to be sold. When someone buys it they kill the poor thing then dip it in boiling water to get all the feathers off. After the market, we walked past a bank, restaurants, the Library and the Post Office and a school for handicapped children. I really liked the walk around Wah Fu but I was very tired and exhausted. Maya Chan Our Picnic at Tai Tam Before we went to Tai Tam we went on a walk from Deep Water Bay to Repulse Bay. We played on the beach. I played tag. When we were ready we went to Tai Tam on the bus. It was a long walk. We walked along the road and crossed the reservoir. I saw a turtle swimming in the water. We climbed the hill and got to the picnic place. When we got there we had to choose a place to sit to have our picnic. · Everybody brought some food to share. I brought decorated marshmallows. Mrs Blake brought crackers for a Christmas treat. There was a good tree to climb. There was a hole in the bushes which led to the reservoir beach. We couldn't go down it though. I've been down before. We played a game of soccer with a plastic bottle. Then Mrs Finnie blew the whistle meaning we had to go. Then we went back to school. I liked the lunch. Elisha Thynne Sports I do lots of sports. Every Saturday I go horse-riding at Pokfulam Reservoir. I can do sitting trot, rising trot and canter. I do judo on Monday. I can do lots of throws. I have tennis lessons on Friday. I can do all the hits. On Sundays I do rugby. I play for Sandy Bay. We have 2 or 3 weeks of practice and then we have a match. We won against Kai Tak and the Yellow Monkeys. My favourite sport is horse riding and my favourite horse is Ebony. The horse I hate is Frosty because he kicks. Oliver Cantwell Ocean Park I went to Ocean Park with my Mum, Dad and Patrick. The first thing we did was go on the Spider. It wasn't scary. But then we went on the Octopus. It was a bit more scary and it was fun . After that we went to see the dolphin and whale show. The best bit was when the whale jumped out of the water then splashed down. We got all wet. After that Mum said I could go on the Roller Coaster because I was tall enough. It was very scary and I didn't want to go on again. We went on the Raging River. It was calm at first but I didn't notice that there was a very steep bit at the end. Wow, I was at the front. I got soaked! After that we went to Kids World. It was a great day. Daniel Morgan 101 Differences In Hong Kong I live in a building that is 35 floors high. In Melbourne my house is 2 floors high and I don't share it with anybody except my Mum and Dad. My house has a garden, a swimming pool, a barbecue and a pond for my pet fishes. In Hong Kong I have a little space downstairs to kick the ball and a very long space to ride my bike. There are so many skyscrapers in Hong Kong. They are gold, silver, blue, red, black, green and purple. In Melbourne there are some skyscrapers in the middle of town but people live in houses there. The seasons are different too . When it is winter in Hong Kong it is hot summer in Melbourne. One thing I like in Hong Kong, I can kick a ball . In Melbourne I have to travel all the way to a park to kick it. Oliver Blake Hong Kong and Wellesley Hong Kong is a lot different than Wellesley. In Wellesley the winter was freezing and we had snow. My family used to go skiing when there was enough snow. There was one mountain for skiing that I loved. There are hard slopes and easy. I like doing both. My favourite part was when we went flying down and then waiting in line to go up in the bucket. When we left the mountain I hated carrying my skis. They are too heavy. On the way home sometimes we would find black ice on the road. It is very dangerous. Black ice is black and very hard to see. In Hong Kong you could not find one bit of snow because it is so warm. I like my new school and home, also the new kids that I'm meeting. Hong Kong is nice because it is a nice warm place. Madeleine McCarthy 102 Kellett School I came to Kellett School in the Twos. The first day I felt like I didn't want to come. I didn't really like the uniform. The topic was weather. I enjoyed it. I lead my side onto the stage at our assembly. My dad just got off work to come and see me with my mum. I like Wednesday assemblies. I like being in a high classroom and going onto the roof I like the playground and especially the apparatus. I still get muddled going around Kellett because of all the different corridors. I love being at Kellett. Rosalind Webber Chinese New Year At Chinese New Year the Chinese people put honey on Zao Huang's lips. He is the Kitchen God. They leave food for him and hay for his horse l;>efore he goes to heaven. Then he will surely say good things about the family . The day before the Chinese New Year the mum is very busy. She prepares the food. She has to use sharp knives to cut up the food and if she cuts her finger at the New Year she cuts her luck for the next year. At Chinese New Year the children get lai see packets. They are little red envelopes with money inside. They also get new clothes. Everybody decorates their houses with gold and red lanterns and firecrackers on strings. They are not real because real ones are dangerous. I had to run in with the wooden horse model. James Hall It was hard for Mrs James and Mr Marshall to say who was who when we . were all dressed up. I was a Greek soldier. I was embarrassed. Suneel Appan In the play I was a Greek sailor and soldier. We were practising for three weeks. It was so hard. When we were coming down the stairs to do it for our Mums and Dads it was so scary because I would be embarrassed if anything went wrong, but nothing did. It was fun when we tried on the costumes. The best part was when we attacked the Trojans and the lights were flashing. Mrs James thought that I would be a good King Priam and Mr Marshall thought that the other Ben - Ben Bergland - would be a good King Priam too . So in the end we were both Kings! Mrs Lamont had to work really hard to get the decorations ready for the Hall. She was even killing us to finish our horses on time. Callum Chia I was a Trojan soldier and every day we practised. The Trojans wore blue and green and the Greeks wore red and black. Angela Cheung I was a Greek soldier. I thought that our play was really fun . It took a long time to practise it! When it was over I wanted to do it again . Katie Millar I was Herald 2. When we did our play I was embarrassed . After I said my words I went to the back of the stage and played "Paris' walking music" on the recorder. Beverley Wong t I was a Greek soldier. It was really exciting. We all made swords and shields. The Trojan shields were green and blue and the Greek shields were red and black. Alexander Whitters I was a Trojan merchant. We had to take hold of the rope for one of the songs - "Pull, pull, pull." After that a girl joined our group and we started the script in best. Before we had done five words another girl joined us. When we were halfway through the script, we got yet another girl. Then we changed the script so she got a part. Then we wrote the other half When we had finished we made the props. The props were knives, a match, a gas bottle, a chain saw and a TV camera. We had one dress rehearsal. Then we went home. The next day was the day of our assembly. At 9 o'clock we had a final practice. Then we did the real thing. We didn't think we would get it right but we did. In one of the songs we were supposed to sing scollops (scallops) but some people said scallops. When it was over, we went to the playground with our costumes on. Two children chased · me round the playground asking for my autograph. When I gave it to them they. didn't want it any more. I think the part that I got was quite boring. I think making all the chopsticks in time was quite difficult. When I got home my mum said she loved it and she liked "Yan" and my bit. What was she talking about? Laurel bubbled with enthusiasm and gabbled away about our play. Finally, I got it! We're going to do a play - about rice - on stage - in front of all the children in the school - and our parents. Hold on! I'm GOING TO BE IN IT!! I think it'll be OK. I think it'll be great. It's the 31 st October!" WWB' s gravestone moved to one side and out of the grave climbed WWB. When he was out they hurried along quickly. When they got to Spooksville they decided to go to the disco. So they walked along the street. When they got there the Dark Disco lights were flashing and the ghostbuster music was blasting away. Rob, Annika, Peter and me, Nikolas Mutant, heard there was a Hallo we' en party in the deserted town, Spooksville. So we · set off It was a cold and damp night. After 15 minutes of looking, Rob saw a sign. The sign was half rotted . We could only see the word "Hotel" . Peter decided to follow it. Slowly, we passed more signs. Every sign had only the word "Hotel" on it. Finally, we came to a sign which said "Welcome to Horror Hotel". We turned and saw Horror Hotel black against the moon. Peter said, "Let's go inside." There was a creaking noise as we opened the old door then we saw a sign which said "Deception" . Then Peter did the most horrible thing. He rang the bell . Oliver Witton. Bitty Bat Bitty Bat was asleep one day, hanging upside-down of course, in her spooky bat cave. Suddenly she woke up and remembered it was Hallo we' en. Squeaking excitedly she flapped out of her cave and flew through the moonlit night. She always went to meet her friends in Sinister Street in Spooksville and go and scare children out of their wits who were "Trick or Treating" . They all went to the Horror Hotel for the party at the Dark Disco in the dungeon. They danced all night and had lots of fun . At dawn she went back to her bat-cave. She was very tired after all the excitement at the Dark Disco. Emily Harris. Wobbly Bobbly Bones WBB, that's short for Wobbly Bobbly Bones, remembered it was Halloween and he remembered about Spooksville and trick or treating so he scrambled out of his grave and ran to Spooksville. When he got to Spooksville, his first victim was a little girl dressed up as a princess. All he had to do was say 'Boo!' and she ran off at 1,000 mph out of Spooksville. Then he tried to scare a Ninja Turtle. He was a little harder but not too difficult to scare and he ran off at 100 mph. His next two 'victims were the pirate and the Indian. They were at the disco so WBB, with the help of Scatterbrains Fred, frightened them out of there and they ran off. Then WBB went back to his grave. James Budge Floating Fanny That's my name! My mother gave me that name. She's called Disappearing Daisy. My father is called Fading Fred, we haven't seen him for a long time. On Hallowe' en I float around waiting for groups of kids who are out trick or treating. Those sweet little princesses and brave power rangers soon run screaming home to Mommy when I appear. It's the best laugh I have all year. Sometimes I float through walls to join in the Hallowe' en parties. The kids get such a shock when they see me that they fall into the apple bobbing tub, sit on the chocolate spider cake or hide their faces in the pumpkin. Linsey Sluk. The Ghost of Camel Hairy Camel Hairy just woke up and remembered it was Hallowe' en so he floated out of his coffin to the surface and scratched his head. "What shall I do tonight?" he said. "Maybe scare people. Yes, I'll do that" So off he went to frighten people. He floated through the window and went Woooooooo. Then he remembered about the great tradition of the Spooks. It was called Spooksville. Off he went out the window. He went to the Horror Hotel, said "Hello" to the Spooky Duke and went to the Dark Disco and danced 'til the clock struck five . Then he went back to his coffin. James Charlton. "Dark Disco" in "Horror Hotel" Sleepy Bones Somebody ordered shark fin flying saucer soup and I made it. Here are the ingredients for shark fin flying saucer soup. First you take a worm, then a smelly shark' s fin and put it in your bowl. Then you find some octopus' tentacles and drop them in, but before you drop them in, try a little bit of it and put in a whole box of tissues and a snail, then cook it. Delicious! "Yuki " said the boy dressed up as a turtle. Come to the Crazy Cafe again you four children! Chetan Ahuja Medusa Potion Medusa Potion was just finishing off her new potion, frogs legs, worm guts, monkey brains, cold feet, birds eyes and last but not least spiders eggs. Phoebe Morgan 125 Juggling Joanna Suddenly, Juggling Joanna was sliding through the grave. She went somewhere creepy and eerie. There was a sign that said DARK DISCO that way. There was an arrow pointing left. Juggling Joanna went that way. On the way she met a witch called Witchy Fingers, her best friend . They went to a haunted house where it said again Dark Disco. They crept up the stairs and with a 000000000000 they went into a rooooom where there were Bogey men, Draculas and Monsters. Juggling Joanna had been waiting for this for years and years and now it was finally here. She enjoyed dancing with her friends. Then she had to go back to her grave. Cristina Rosas. 126 Harriet the Hag Harriet the Hag went to Spooksville on her broomstick. When Harriet got there, someone told her that there were four children in Spooksville. "We can frighten them," said Harriet. So they did, with cackles and spells and lots of chants. Then they left for the Dark Disco where they danced 'til the clock struck twelve. And then they went off into the dark, dark night. Emily Buss. My Costume, My make-up. I was dressed up as a princess, which I thought was soppy, since princesses are scardy-cats and always worrying. They're not at all brave. I hated wearing a pink cloak with gold ribbon, a white dress with stars all over it, a gold glitter tiara, ballet socks and gold and silver shoes. Yuck! Especially the make- up! I had to have pink blusher, red lipstick and blue eye shadow. I would have much preferred to be an ugly witch! Jennie Robertson. Spooksville Rob was changing into his costume when a ghost floated through the wall. He screamed and ran outside. He ran into Peter' s house, he was going to Peter' s house anyway for trick or treating. "Why on earth did you come so early?" asked Peter. "G-g-g-ghost!" "Rubbish! I don't believe in ghosts. Corne on. Let's go and pick up the others." As they walked out of the door they discovered that the house was surrounded by ghosts. Their friends were tied to poles. Quick as a flash, Peter drew an arrow to his bow, loaded it and freed Nick. The ghosts charged but they ran straight through them and bumped into each other. Nick ran over and freed Annika. They ran all the way out of Spooksville, then started walking as they approached Horror Hotel. As they were walking down the lane, Mum and Dad found them, they had thought the children were lost. I said, "Send one of my maids to give Mr. Miller and Mr. Nevin some tough maths homework to do." Cecily McMahon Wishful Camp When we arrive at our hotel camp in Sha Tin, I expect that we will be allowed to have a feast of chocolates, ice-cream, brownies, sweets and lots of wonderful goodies. When we have finished our feast, we should be allowed to have a swim in the hotel camp swimming pool and enjoy the lovely sunshine. Then I expect servants to serve me with a big fresh glass of fruit punch followed by a gorgeous selection of brownies and cakes. After a suitable tea, I will then have a nice rest in my King size bed. In a tired voice I asked them why they woke me up and Grace told me that I was not allowed to talk until seven a.m. We all went back to sleep but I was mad with my group. About four and a half hours later, when we were all dressed, Neha cooked breakfast. It was meant to be Weetabix, toast and scrambled eggs. I wish that this is what we had but instead we were given burnt toast, scorched eggs and soggy Weetabix. To top off the bad morning we had to wash up. Later we went to the shop and bought 7up and water. Someone calmly washed the dishes with 7up and so for the rest of the camp our food tasted of 7up. Mariska Thynne RULES No shoes allowed in the tent . No talking before six am. No ea ting in the tent unless it's raining. No mess on the floor. No f iddling with the flag pole . No p l aying noisy games while other people are trying to sleep. No ghos t stories at night. Neha's Spectacular Pill Poor Neha, she had a sore ear and she had to wait for Mrs. O'Neill to come back with some medicine. Mr. Nevin thought there must be something in her ear, so he lifted her up, turned her upside-down and shook her. "Not helpful!" Neha said. Dinner started and Mrs.O'Neill came back and gave Neha the dreaded 'PILL'. Neha put it in her mouth and slowly took it back out again. "How am I supposed to swallow this?", she whimpered. From then on she refused to swallow it. We tried everything, even Mr. Miller's famous chop-chop train didn't work! At the end she put the pill in her mouth, chewed it, poked her tongue out several times, groaning "Ah!" and finally swallowed it. She almost won an academy award, what a spectacular performance! Grace Leung Food Food Food! Marcus and Richard were the grand chefs, they are Vikings of course! They made home made hamburgers, which they also had to cook. While the Vikings were cooking the rest of the group were playing in the field but, when Marcus came out with the bottles of Sprite and Coke we all rushed to their table and sat down. Richard came with the tray of hamburgers. He said, "Two each, one with cheese one without". I tasted the cheese first "mmmmmmmmmml". I jumped up and down, it was delicious, better than McDonald's and better then my mum can cook! (Hope you're not reading this, mum!) Everyone liked them. Miss Goddard said, "Ten out of ten!" We all cheered and teased the girls because they said that their food was better then ours, "Ha ha ha ha!" They got so irritated! Later we had burnt marshmallows! COOL! Johan Cammareri What I Think Camp will be Like I imagine it's going to be rainy when we get to Sha Tin. The girls' tents will be away from the boys and we will be a bit squashed but not too much. I also imagine Leanne is going to kick me out of the stuffy tent in the middle of the night and I am going to get all wet! I'm also sure that Lauren is going to keep us up all night gossiping so we will be grumpy in the morning. I also think that our table is going to fall down when we are in the middle of our favour;te meal. Our tents are going to be hot, small and stuffy and we are not going to get much sleep and I can guarantee that! I'm sure the disgusting burnt meals are not going to be very successful either! I think the extremely smelly toilets are luckily not going to be revolting holes in the ground and they are going to be satisfactory. Well, that's all about the toilets for now! Anna Hartley Camp Day 1 As we arrived at the campsite we looked around for a while then sat down to observe Mr Nevin and Mr Miller pitch an excuse for a tent. A little later we went to make our own and we did wonderfully well. The same happened when we made our. furniture. It was a great success so now we all had some free time. Before we made our meals we filled the time with really useful subjects such as doing maths assignments like working out how many toes we had each. Our dinner was based on Italian cuisine and included a ravishing sauce. Up until bedtime we had actually behaved like angels ..... .from Hell. James Beesley C amp When I woke up I was so glad we were at camp. We played all kinds of games. When we had finished playing we had lunch. It was DELICIOUS! We were staying in Sha Tin and sleeping in tents. There was a lot of grass and trees around us. "What a lovely place to be in," I said. "Come and play with us Richard," shouted James. It was soccer so I joined in. My team was called 'The Body Guards' their team was called 'Readers Digest'. We kept playing until it was bedtime, we had so much fun! We won 25-01 What a great camp! Richard Lousich The Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas When we visited the 'Temple of 10,000 Buddhas', we had to walk up about 514 stairs to get to them. Oh that was awful for me! When we arrived, we were put into groups of two, I was with Penelope. We were then told to come back to the base at an agreed time. The Buddhas were very interesting because they all had different facial expressions or held their hands in different positions. We also counted thirty seven shelves and on each shelf there were about ninety eight Buddhas. We multiplied ninety eight by thirty seven and then because there were four walls we multiplied by four and got an approximate answer for the total number of Buddhas in the temple. This was fourteen thousand, five hundred and four! Our answer was bigger than the real answer because some of the walls had windows in them. I saw an interesting monk. He was called Yuet Kai and he founded the temple. When he died he was covered in goldleaf. He was sitting just like a normal Buddha does, but in a glass case. After about three hours of pushing the bus will finally move, and 'SPLAT', we will all end up face down in the mud! By the time we arrive at the campsite it will be midnight and then we will have to put up our tents! Eventually we will manage to get, into our sleeping bags and go to sleep. In the morning, when the teachers come to waken us up they will walk on our specially prepared minefield. Mr. Miller and Mr. Nevin will be blown back to school! Later, after we have had our wonderful BBQ, cooked by our own talented hands, our amahs will arrive and clean up after us. I will also have my own Apache helicopter for hunting deer. I think it will be really great. Marcus Sewerin Sha Tin's Two Days! It was a peaceful morning, the birds were chirping, the deer were grazing and the swans were swimming gracefully. I was the only person up so since it was my day to cook, I started making breakfast. I pulled my tracksuit on and began to make the eggs: I paced around the tent for a while but then I smelled something burning. Running around the tent, I suddenly felt my leg wouldn't move. It had been caught on a stake. Although in pain, I pulled harder and the stake came out. The tent went into free-fall right down on our breakfast. The collapse woke all my tentmates up. They were shocked. Later Nevin came over and yelled at us to tidy up.the mess and afte~e had cleaned up, all, my tent gronp had become really mad at e. The Dead Un-Decayed Man The story of Yuet Kai is so amazing. After he died and was buried for eight months and then dug up, they found his body had hardly decayed at all! I wonder what will happen when I die, if I don't decay after eight months will I become a Saint? Will I get covered in gold and maybe put in a temple, that I founded of course? I wonder if it will have over six thousand hundred million statues all doing something Mr. Miller and Mr:. Nevin invented, shouting. All six thousand hundred million statues all shouting at each other, maybe the tourists will make up a legend about the statues shouting at each other to scare the bad spirits away, to make the world a safer place. Every single statue is in a different position! But that will never happen I'm sure. · James Gillies What Camp was Really Like! Camp was really fun and our Life or Death tent group got on really well together. Although I predicted trouble, I didn't kick half the tent out and the others didn't get drenched. The flag pole did not collapse either. I did take over Anna's bed though! The tent was freezing after dark but luckily Lauren did not talk all through the night. Camp was a little bit better than I thought it would be. Leanne Goold Tripping First I tripped over a bit of our tent rope. A big roar of laughter came from Nelly. As my hands fell to the ground, they felt as if someone had stabbed 1,000 pins into them. I had fallen on my side so, as you would expect, it hurt as I ran to the bathroom to wash my poor hole-filled hands, ignoring Mrs O'Neill as she asked me where I was going. My hands still felt terrible, as if the pins were being pushed in slowly. They still felt bad as I washed them but didn't hurt quite as much as before. In between then and my other major trip, when I stumbled over that original piece of string quite a few more times, there is nothing worth mentioning. The only other trip that's worth mentioning (luckily) was when I had just finished talking to Ami and her group in their tent. I got out and was walking in the dark when I tripped over the same piece of tent rope as I had done before. I went flying forward and fell straight onto my hands and my left knee. It felt worse than the previous fall by around 10,000 times. I don't think I'll ever stay in a tent again. Alice Walker Luxury Camp In my fantasy camp there would be a queen size bed with silk curtains around it for privacy. There should also be a dressing table with brushes, hair ties, clips and a silk covered seat. Each tent would be twenty metres long with four people to each tent. Also a maid would be waiting on us to attend to our every need. There would be an outdoor swimming pool and a chauffeur driven limousine to take us anywhere. If only it was all true. They were all free standing except the flagpole so Mr Beesley whispered, "There's nothing wrong with a little cheating every once in a while," as he hammered a tent peg through the flag pole and into the ground. The food we eat will make flies and cockroaches fall down dead. I have a thought that birds will make their nests on our flagpole. Our nightlight will probably explode and make a hole in the tent. The fire will burn the tent and snakes will get in. A vision says that a sewage plant will be dumping waste into the campsite and make mutated three eyed fish. George Yianni I Think Sha Tin Camp will be Like This ..... . Our camp area will be wet and muddy. The weather will be drizzling with rain and it will be quite hard on the floor at night. The showers and bathrooms will be to the right of our tent. The teachers will be quite strict with our bedtime and our tent will be navy blue. There definitely will not be a microwave or an oven. We will have a B.B.Q. pit area and have reasonable bathroom showers. There will be lots of trees in the tent area and plenty of greenery. But perhaps they will not have the things that we want at the shops. Despite this, I think camp will work out well! Quita Kirk-Duncan Crazy Camp I will be happy to go to camp. I think the tents will be big and either green or pink. There will be a dog, a very big dog, and a very small cat in a tree. There will be many barbecues to cook food on and the meals will be delicious, but not when we bum them. The beds will be hard and cold and there will be a lot of broken flagpoles, tables and clothes driers. The weather is going to be rainy, very rainy and the grass will be wet. Helena will fall and break her finger. We are going to see a lot of snakes, dangerous snakes. When I cook my meatballs they will run away and jump in Helena's hair and eat it. Helena will bum the food because she will be watching T.V. Viva Bostrom Washing Up Cool Sha Tin! When we were in school Mr.Nevin and Mr.Miller had spent a long time trying to make a flagpole. After what seemed ages we said to them, "Isn't it time to go Huhhhh?". "Sorry", they said. Off we went by coach to Sha Tin. We sang all the way and the teachers had to cover their ears! When we eventually reached Sha Tin we had to walk for about one mile, so we made the teachers carry all our bags! "Can we rest?", the teachers pleaded. "All right", we said. When we reached the campsite the teachers made our tables, driers and flag poles, they even cooked our food! Now that is what I call camp! When it was going home time, the teachers were too tired to even get on the bus, so we left them there! Camp Neha Chopra I think that camp will be good, but may be it could be bad. Camp might even be fun. I hope that we will have a very, very good time. I also wish that the grass will be dry and soft and really high. My group think that we will all enjoy the trip. The thing we will all hate is the cleaning, washing, setting up the tent and cooking our food. Jonathan Riis "Eeeekkkl" Before us were piles of disgusting, dirty, grimy plates just waiting to be washed. Unfortunately it was my tum to wash up. Gross. I unenthusiastically picked up the cloth and a mucky bowl someone had been using to eat 111acaroni cheese out of. I turned on the tap, which had been turned on many times before, by other unenthusiastic washers. The water was ice-cold and didn't look very clean. I wet the cloth and slowly wiped it across the bowl. A whole lot of macaroni cheese came off, but the bowl was still as dirty as ever. I tried again but in vain. I tried a third time and then decided to stick some washing up liquid in with the water. Whoops! I poured too much in. Uhhhh. The water turned green. "Well I suppose it will clean the dishes," I thought. I reluctantly dipped the cloth in, which turned from yellow to green as soon as it touched the water. I ran the cloth over the bowl and to my infuriation, nothing happened! I added the whole bottle of washing up liquid to the water and watched the water tum a luminous green. I accidentally dropped the cloth into the water. I groaned. Pulling up my sleeves I stuck a hand in and fished around for it. I found it right in the corner of the sink and pulled it out. I dragged it across the bowl... VICTORY! Some of it had come off, not a lot, but enough to get me going. I slowly worked my way through the towering stack of greasy dishes. Once I had finished I cried out "Yaaaal" and I pranced off happily. Fantasy At camp I think that our group is going to have bad luck and it is going to be like World War Three. It is going to be 'Nightmare On Camp Street' for us. I expect that it will rain and thunder just over our tent. We will likely be given monkey brains to eat for breakfast and lunch and maybe birds' heads for dinner. Then our tent will catch on fire. At night we will hear snakes crawling all over the tents, trees rustling and the wind blowing the tent back towards school. Well, we have to hope that doesn't happen. As well as snakes and trees and all that, there will be ants, horrible gigantic ants. They will make a path down into my sleeping bag. If they do that, I will scream and wake everybody up. Viva will kill me because she will be so angry to have been woken up. After a while, camp will be over and we will go home and sleep in our own beds. Our own warm, comfortable beds. Helena Carlsson Today When I woke up I dressed and went outside to cook with Helena. After our pancake, which was very good, we went to the field and played. Eleonora and Viva washed up. Later I went to play, then to the supermarket where we visited Wellcome to buy food for lunch and dinner. Back at the tent we made some chairs that Viva, Helena and I had designed. When I went to the field it was to be out of the way of the cookers. I jumped the skipping rope, then went with Viva and Helena, hand in hand, to lunch. We ate macaroni cheese. It was very good. After that I went to the field again. Later I climbed a tree and played badminton and did some more skipping. We played a marvellous game that Mr Nevin invented, then I ran through the skipping rope and had dinner. Danielle Falknor Thursday Breakfast Cooking Thursday started out with me being very rudely awakened by a rough shake of the shoulder, by guess who? Yes, you have guessed it, Nehal Today, we cooked Chicken Cutlets. First we had to go to the supermarket and buy everything we needed. We bought: Eggs, plain flour, breadcrumbs, chicken fillets, cinnamon and nutmeg. First, we dipped the chicken fillets into the eggs, then into the flour and last into the breadcrumbs. Next we added the herbs. We fried them. We also made mashed potato and salad. Our group took the longest time to cook the evening meal, but it was worth it! Soon after that Grace came running in through the opening of the tent shouting, "It's 7:30 am and we are late" As Grace was rushing out of the tent, she accidently tripped over the pole that held the tent up. "Hey who turned the lights out?" The tent had fallen down! Grace and I had our turn to cook breakfast while the others put the tent back up again. We had to cook: toast (otherwise known as charcoal!), and scrambled eggs, (otherwise known as the yellow blob!) Everyone was glad that that was all we had to cook, because we did over cook it a tiny bit, well more than jµst a tiny bit. Eventually, the tent was up and we all collapsed onto the tent floor which was wet and soggy from last night's rain. Natalie Green Camp Day 1: We got off the bus, it was quite a hot day and we were not in the mood for a walk, and as you have probably already guessed we HAD to go on one. The walk lasted for about 45 minutes and when we finally arrived at the camp site, around 11 :00, Mr Miller and Mr Nevin showed us how to put up our tent. Next we went to our own little spot were we put up our tent. After the tent was up we started building our flagpole, the drier and the table and this what is happened next! 1. The table didn't work, 2. Quita and Kozue brought back the wrong kind of meat, 3. Quita and I didn't wash EVERYTHING up, BUT ........... . 1. After some help from Mr Miller our table turned out just fine! 2. The meat tasted LOVELY, 3. We washed everything up just in time. Juliet Button Yummy Food Angharad and Leanne made dinner on Wednesday. They made pasta and tomato sauce. I thought dinner would never come, but it did, and when it came it was delicious! Even though they had made enough to feed an army! All six of us put together couldn't eat even half of it. The official food tester Miss Goddard, gave us nine out of ten, pretty good ha! I had two really big helpings, then I was full! After that we asked the tent next door, the (S.S), if they wanted some because their dinner was taking so long to cook, and they didn't know if they would have enough food. When they sat down to eat it they thought it was yum! For desert we had toasted marshmallows. I stuck mine too close to the fire and it caught fire! I had to blow and blow it until the fire stopped! When I tried to get the marshmallow off the stick it stuck to my hands! I had to lick all of the sticky mush off my hands! It was really yummy! Penelope Headford In other words 'IT TASTED GREAT!' Michael Brooks-Reid Shopping Today, Nick and I went shopping for ou1 food. We were given an envelope witt $400 in it and our shopping list. We went around the shop collecting the things we needed. Suddenly, I remembered, the envelope! I wasn't holding it and neither was Nick. We searched around in a mad panic and had almost looked around the whole shop when I realized it was at the bottom of the trolley! After we had recovered from our mad panic we went to the check out counter. The total cost was surprising, we thought we hadn't got all of the shopping, because the cost was just a little more than half the money we had been given. Nick Armstrong Camp Expectations RULES I hope camp will be fun and enjoyable, the site will be well laid out and we will co-operate well. There will be good food, no collapsing tables, flagpoles or driers and we will survive. I think the tents will be placed in a circle and that they will be quite big, although a bit uncomfortable and cold. The campsite will probably be in a country park, but I hope that it won 't be windy and cold. We should be able to co-operate well together in shopping, cooking and making the table, drier and the flagpole. I expect that the people who are cooking will not make a mess of it. He tagged me and all the other people hiding there. I made my way carefully down the extremely steep hill, and went to the place were all the other caught people were. I can't remember who the last person caught was, but I really enjoyed the game. Manav Gupta Real Camp I think our real camp will be somewhere near the city. It will not be deep in the jungle but it should be fun. T_he question is whether our camp group will be healthy because some are sick today. It should be fun making our tents, flagpole etc. We might do some research on the wildlife there. I expect to have fun when it is raining because we may have to cook our food in the tent. James Cotterill Fantasy Camp On Wednesday the 7th of March a limousine will pick us up and take us to Sha Tin, where we will have a luxurious time in the swimming pools and other facilities. We will be able to choose from scuba diving and water skiing, ice skating and ice hockey, football and rugby, and each day I'll do two of them. We don't have to make anything because everything is supplied with the compliments of the camp. We even get our own choice of food. On Wednesday we could have a 8.8.Q, a Mc Donald's burger and a Pizza Hut Hawaiian pizza. On Thursday we could have a roast beef buffet, a Harry Ramsden's fish dinner and Dan Ryan's spare ribs. On Friday for our final meal we could have Spaghetti and Chicken. There is even a built in T.V and C.D player. This is the best camp you could ever go to and I bet whoever goes there will love it. P.S You don't have to do anything except relax and eat. Chris White I Have No Idea Dream Camp First of all you will arrive in a beautiful hovercar and instead of walking normally you shall have super boots that send yo~ flying! When you arri~e at_ camp, I don't think we should call it camp at all but a big outdoor hotel, a maid will come up to you and take your bulging, heavy bags to what you think will be a dirty, cobwebbed tent. Instead it will really be a tent with a king size bed each! After you have explored the huge wallpapered tent, you go to the see the bathroom. What you probably expect of a camp bathroom is cobwebs everywhere but !o yo~r surprise you find a place where the maid turns on the tap for you. Cooking will not be a problem you just type what you want into a computer and it will be ready and delivered into your tent in half an hour. A moving platform will go around the camp and when you want to go somewhere you just hop on and away you go. We will not have to wash anything but if you need anything cleaned you simply put it on the moving platform too. Carling Chan Food Okay, there we were, sitting at the table waiting for the food to cook. "READY" screamed Danielle. Everybody rushed to the wobbly table where there was a plate of potatoes and two plates of meat balls. "YUMMY". Just after we had finished the first plate of meat balls we realized that the rootbeer, that was left on the floor, was spilling and Viva was too busy begging for more and more meat balls to notice what was happening! Next, Helena and Felicity put two, big juicy marshmallows on satay sticks over the barbecue and burnt them until the marshmallows were all black and disgusting! Afterwards Helena and I had to wash up all the, ucky, revolting, dirty and awful plates. It almost ruined my dinner. Eleonora Mandolfo Mr Miller is Superman!! More stairs! No, I've got a cramp! There is a washing up area next to the field and it has a huge trough of foaming water that cascades up and down the river rapids of dirty dishes and bits of food! Next to this "whi.te water" section they've got these really cool gas burners attached to massive kerosene tanks with the words "DANGER" and "FLAMMABLE" painted all over them in red paint. I think I know what I want for my next birthday! Okay I'm tired of yapping on about the site's appearance, I'll tell you about the pitching of the tent. Well, I watched Mr Miller and Mr Nevin pitch their tent or half watched at least, but I was more interested in the strange neon, green, radioactive bug crawling up Angharad's leg! (It was especially interesting when it bit her and then her eyes started to glow with a pale, yellow, pastel colour!) "That will be the day, Mr Miller can't even lead the right way to Lantau camp!" I said. "So what makes you think he knows the way to Sha Tin camp?". There was a bus waiting to take me back to camp. I ran to the bus, well not exactly ran, I just walked painfully. Finally I got to the bus, sweat dripping down my face. The bus took me to camp. When Mr Miller got there he came to my tent and pulled a carton of 'Rocky Road Ice Cream' out of his pocket, just for me! When I had finished eating I felt so much better. Katherine Harvey-Kelly I like Kellett very much and I will miss my friends and teachers. I have really enjoyed P3 because we do clubs and science. I like assembly and doing the Christmas plays. James Harvey-Kelly I like Kellett School - it's the best school I've ever been to. What I like most of all is doing assemblies. I'm sorry that we are leaving, but I hope that if I come back to Hong Kong on holiday, I can come back to see Kellett School. Katherine Bario I am sad I am leaving Kellett because the teachers are nice to me and I like playing in the ' cupboard' area. My favourite things are cooking, reading and work. Stephanie Mittiga 141 Past Pupils Looking back over my school magazines, I think I must be nearly 'all grown-up' because I'm amazed at how young everyone looks and how long ago it seems since I was at Kellett! Despite the time gap, I've kept in touch with my Kellett friends, even those who have left Hong Kong. My link with the school has been strengthened by the fact that my youngest brother is now in Primary l - continuing in the Hutton tradition! After I finished Kellett in 1988, I transferred to Hong Kong International School. Currently I am in the 11th Grade, working very hard to pass my exams and get into University in the United States. While I have another year left to decide where I want to go, it is my marks this year which will determine where I can get in. I still love to read and write, two things I learned to appreciate at Kellett, and I have continued acting and singing - the legacy of numerous assemblies and the school choir. My younger brother, William, who finished at Kellett in 1991 , is also studying at Hong Kong International School, and will enter High School next year. He plays trombone in the school band and is a star on the cross-country team. Although he is excited about being in High School, he is also nervous about managing all of his work and activities. While I don ' t remember my first day of Reception at Kellett , I can certainly remember many other days - the Christmas party, my first camp, sports day, my leaving play. Thank you Kellett for so many memories. Elizabeth Hutton I was born in Hong Kong in 1973 and I attended the kindergarten at the French International School before I entered Kellett's Primary l. After Primary 6, I went to Island School, where I stayed until the end of Form V. I spent two years working as a professional model, before I started my present four-year B.Mus. course, majoring in piano performance, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. This is my final undergraduate year and next academic year I hope to be accepted for the post graduate advanced solo studies course. My career will probably include some teaching as well as playing - hopefully as a soloist and also as an associate artist. working with singers and particularly with my cellist husband, Julian-David Metzger. My happiest memories of Kellett are of the many hours I spent in the remedial room, playing with cornflakes boxes and doing patchwork. I was furious when Mrs Downes pulled me back into the classroom with everybody else. My worst memories of Kellett are of the hours I spent in the band when there were performances. I always resented it , because I wanted to act. I think that's why whenever people asked whether I planned to be a musician, I said 'No!' . But actually, once I grew up a bit, I realized it might not have been a bad idea. It's funny how things turn out - who'd have thought it? Gitanjali Ram I left Kellett just last year (in 1994) and at the time I was 11 . I was at Kellett from the end of the Ones to the end of the Sixes. I enjoyed going to Kellett and I sti ll miss it although I am enjoying going to West Island School and am making new friends and learning new things. 142 Some of my favourite memories of Kellett are the assemblies. One of them I can remember was when ,i boy, who was in the Sixes when I was in the Threes, was dressed up as a woman - he was so funny! I had lots of great times, like going to China on camp, to Macau and being able to abseil for the first time. I also learnt to stand up for myself against anyone, even Mr. Nevin! West Island School has been great so far . The homework was bit difficult to begin with but now I am getting used to it. I have found that the work is different but fun. I am still on the netball team where I play WO and I am also trying out for the hockey team. I have good memories of Kellett and it is nice to visit and see all my old teachers, because I still have a sister there in the Primary Fours. Sian Jamieson I left Kellett in June 1986, which certainly feels a very long time ago - in fact half my life time. My memories of Kellett are still very clear and I still treasure my school magazines dating back to 1981. I started in Reception and left after Primary 4 with Mrs Goldstein, when I was nine years old. Since then, I started Felsted Preparatory School, England, and left Hong Kong to go and live in Singapore. Looking back now there are a couple of memories that will always stick in the back of my mind, such as the school bus races in the morning and, especially, breaks in the playground, during the times when marbles were a big craze. I also remember when the extension of the playground was opened, marked by the planting of a tree by the oldest boy and girl at the time. Times at Kellett always seemed so happy, except for that dreaded time of primary school life when one is faced with the BCG injection. I think, even now, most people must cringe at the thought of i l. Nine years on and I have finished my prep school and, in the same little village at Felsted School, am getting ready for my 'A' Levels. I am currently Head of School and have represented the school for 1st XV rugby, 1st XI hockey and I st VI tennis. I am hoping to go to Nottingham or Bristol University ii1 October to study Mechanical Engineering with French. My years at Kellett were very enjoyable and directed me in the right way in dealing with life and people to get me where I am today. Although I left Kellett so many years ago , I have kept in contact with a couple of friends, but the weirdest thing is that after nine years I may be going to University to study the same subject as Chris Ayres, a very good friend who I made at Kellett, who is currently Head Boy at Island School. Jonathon (Jonty) Neal I was at Kellett from the first day of Reception to the final day of the Sixes. I'm now in year 11 at Island School and preparing myself for G.C.S.E. examinations in June. I would definitely say that up to now most of the best times in my life were at Kellett. I still occasionally talk about Kellett and my days there with my old Kellett friends who I am still with now. I definitely have Kellett to be thankful for as being a great school to grow up in. I wish all of the Sixes and all of the other students the best of luck in moving to secondary school. Whatever you do, don't forget Kellett, all the people you met there, and everything about it! . Lindsay Ellis Hi, my name is Daniel Beard and I left Kellett in 1993 . I now go to West Island School and I am enjoying it very much. In my P6 final concert we did the Sixties, and I think that this gave me loads of valuable acting experience. Last year I was Hamlet in a twenty-minute version of Shakespeare's famous play. I have also got a part in this year's schooJ ·production entitled 'Daisy Pulls It OIT' . I am playing the headmaster of a girls' school! In Kellett I was in the rugby team and, even though this was my only experience of playing rugby, I was selected to play for West Island School from my first term. In fact, this year I was offered a place in the Hong Kong team. The West Island rugby team is made up of many players from Kellett and this just goes to show that playing for Kellett was an excellent experience. However, my life is not all mud and drop-kicks! I was also a joint winner in the school poetry competition this year with a poem I wrote about fly fishing. I am sure that those of you who are in P6 will enjoy West Island when you come in September. I certainly have! Daniel Beard Almost six years ago was the last time I went to Kellett as a student and, although I can't remember my last day, many things in my mind still stand out. My mum (Mrs Speed) working there meant that I was one of the ' teacher-kids' and could use all the apparatus. I could get in early and feed the animals and I could have chocolate digestives when my mum was on playground duty. This went on for six years - right from Reception to Primary 6 - and I thought of Kellett as my second home considering I was there most of the time. Luckily, because my mum was (and still is) the music teacher, she never really embarrassed me because she was 'confined ' to the piano! After leaving Kellett I went on to St. George 's School and was the only person to do so from my class. I didn't know anyone but, throughout the five years I was there, I made many friends from different backgrounds and also lost most of them as the British Forces left . I did well in my G.C.S.E's and all thanks go to my teachers at Kellett School who must've been my biggest influence! I am now at Island School studying for my ' A' Levels which I dread! It is probably where many of you or your brothers and sisters will or do go to, so I might see you around! Nicola Evans 143 Cantonese words and phrases to use in taxis, minibuses, shops and just getting around Hong Kong. On one lesson we even went down to Wah Fu Market and tested our speaking skills. Cantonese Club is lots of fun and we enjoy it. One day I hope to be fluent in Cantonese. Michael Brooks Reid When I first started Mandarin class I was a bit nervous because I was the only P-6 in my class and didn't know anyone else. Mandarin is very much like Cantonese. First of all we learnt the numbers l to I O and then the family but now we are learning about food and on the 19th March we went to a restaurant where the waitresses spoke Mandarin. It was fun and the food was yummy. Cantonese I already knew some Cantonese when I started but now we've been learning something more interesting like words to use on transport and the food at Chinese New Year. The teacher is very nice. Carling Chan We have Cantonese lessons every Thursday after school. Some of the things I have learnt are how to say the colours, how to count , to · , tell the directions to a driver and to shop at the market. My favourite part is homework , when we practice to write . Daniel Brooks Reid In the Cantonese Club we have learnt how to tell the time, how to answer the phone, the colours and lots more.
