I usually reflect on the current year when I begin writing my contribution to the Kellett magazine; this year I reflect instead over the last twenty, the life of Kellett School. When this magazine reaches you in printed form my departure will be imminent and a new chapter will be about to begin for the school. Kellett School has been a part of my life in Hong Kong as I have been part of the life that is Kellett. As I leave it will be with mixed emotions. I have enjoyed enormously the opportunity to work with committed teachers, supportive parents and dedicated board members, and being given the opportunity to share in the successes great and small of the many children who have now attended the school. The years have brought challenges, many varied experiences and much joy. I know my departure will bring me sadness too - I will miss it all . Earlier this year we also said our farewells to Mrs Maura Coultous, our deputy Principal. Mrs Coultous ' 2 involvement over 19 years predates even the name 'Kellett' , when the initial idea for the school was being discussed by the 'Parents Together' group. She became involved as a parent, later as an ancillary teacher, and then a reception class teacher being appointed as deputy in 1980. I am sure she took with her not only very many happy memories but also a great sense of pride in what has been achieved. We will all remember her for her commitment and hard work, her experience and expertise - and even more for the gentleness, loyalty, kindness and support and for the sincere friendship she offered to children, parents and teachers. Her contributions are immeasurable, she is held in great esteem by all who know her. The staff, children, board and parents all played their part in wishing her every future happiness by a series of special farewell events which culminated in a 'Green' Assembly attended by many ex-pupils from Hong Kong secondary schools, present parents and pupils and staff - a very special occasion. The coming school year will bring new children and parents, new teachers with ideas, plans and developments. I am sure Kellett will continue to grow and foster the ideals that put our children in the forefront of our thinking, catering for their needs as they develop into confident adults able to use their many talents. I will enjoy this magazine, like the children and staff who have contributed to the colourful pages and inter~sting range of work. It will prove a very special moment of my last year at Kellett School. I wish everyone success and much happiness in the years ahead. One December day, back in 1976, I spotted an advertisement in the South China Morning Post. WANTED: an ancillary teacher who can play piano. That sounded interesting, just my cup of tea, so down I went to Wanchai to see Viv. She gave me a book entitled Nursery Rhymes for the Young Beginners and asked me to play. End of interview. "We start next week," she said, "and if you're free on Sunday there are still some small jobs to be done ... like painting. Oh, the salary will be $400 per month ." So began an association which has spanned more than twenty eventful years . From Starters to Kellett, who would have believed that from those humble beginnings in Wanchai we would now have such a fine school m Wah Fu? It ' s a testament to her dedication, fortitude, perseverance and hard work. She leaves behind a wonderful legacy. 1.~ .. ~~-...--~ Linda Speed From a few rooms within a Chinese school in Wanchai to our Spanish style school in Wah Fu, Viv Sole has nurtured children, inspired staff and supervised the growth of Kell ett in many and varied ways. One of the least known of her considerable talents is her ability to maximise space in a creative and innovative way. The covered area was Sole Survivors originally just that, but now houses pets, climbing and slide area and of course Viv' s piece de la resistance - the Bookshop. A spare piece of land became the garden, a storage space the cooking room, verandahs were glazed in to provide extensions to classrooms and on the roof another playground, an extra classroom, music and science rooms. Not part of the architects' original plan but all due to Viv' s creative vision. Perhaps one day there will be a Vivienne Sole room. Christina Lamont The education of my youngest son Peter began at " Starters" in September 1977 and also my involvement as an ' unsalaried ancillary '. Through these nineteen years many families have come to appreciate the quiet determination of Vivienne Steer/Sole and her total commitment to the children of Kellett. We, the parents and staff have experienced some tough and traumatic times but we have more happy memories of fun and fulfillment , drama and dedication, assemblies and attainment, love and laughter. Kellett means all this to the children who have passed through our care. When they sang it sounded as if there were instruments playing. The first song was sad and the last one was happy - like a happy ending. It was interesting when Carole told us about the slaves. It's amazing how they sing without music. Their voices were light and dark, and they were different when they talked. I thought it was clever - the brass trumpet sound with her nose. The African language sounded really nice. I liked the marching with their feet. They were good at singing because they probably practised a lot. I liked them because they could sing without instruments. I liked the jazz song especially the middle bit and I liked their hair. I tried the trumpet sound but it came out squeaky. I thought it was sad when they were talking about people being chained. I liked the African song they sang first when one started, then another, and they went 'ooommm'. I liked the Jamaican accent like 'eh mon'. I liked the girl in the blue skirt and the black hat because she did the trumpet. V 0 I C E s When I was listening to their singing, joy and comfort came through my body and warm-ness. Their singing made me feel all lovely inside. I really hope they come back to school before we're 11. I liked the singing of Black Voices. They were describing old tales and lots of cruel memories. Best of all is the heart and thought of the kindness and singing. I thought the Black Voices were great. They have this sort of vibration when they sing. I liked the way they expressed their voices. Their singing sounded like they had instruments in the background. The Black Voices sing very well. They have no music because they are thinking well. I think Black Voices are a great group. They sing really well. I like the songs too. I think it's really cool how they get to travel round the world. Dear Black Voices, your concert was excellent. I thought it was very clever of you to know how to make trumpet noises. Best of all I liked the last song you sang which I think is called 'Jazz'. I liked the way they sang different types of music, and especially how they talked about slaves. Black Voices were beautiful - the music was so harmonious and strong. Their music was well balanced, it did not need any instruments. At my old school we did a project on slavery. I think a capella is my favourite type of music now. Black Voices were the biggest inspiration for singing that I have heard. I love the way they are all in different keys, low and high which all fits together to make harmony. I am very glad they visited and I wish I was old enough to form a group like them. Black Voices were great. They sounded like they were being backed up by a band. The facts they told us were interesting. I hope they visit my new school in England. A capella is a beautiful form of singing. Their voices were so balanced they didn't need instruments. It reminded me of home - I was born in South Africa and named after Helen Joseph who fought against apartheid. My mother was put in prison when she fought for blacks to be free. I really want to see the Black Voices again. Their voices were amazing. Black Voices are the best group I've heard. It was a wonderful performance. The trumpet sounded very realistic - I play so I know! I was amazed when I heard them sing. I thought they would be totally different than they were. I think slavery was really cruel. They may be staying with me but I've never seen them all together. They are very lucky that they are so talented. Black Voices sing a capella. It is a very clever style of singing and they were very good at it. Their voices harmonised well. They should be popular in the future. I have not heard such beautiful voices before. I hope I can be like them. I wish they could come to Hong Kong again, and I could get a tape of their music. They sang in beautiful harmony. It sounded wonderful with no instruments and the high voices with the low. Each song was different and I liked them all. I would really like to have a voice like that. 31 33 34 Inter - Schools Competitions Kellett v WIS 1996 was a very successful rugby season for Kellett School. On three different Thursday afternoons at So Kun Po Sports Ground, games were played against various schools. Kellett won five games out of six and drew one against Clearwater Bay School. At the ESF/SCEA mini-rugby tournament Kellett came top of their league, winning three games and once again drawing with Clearwater Bay who finished runners-up in our league. In the semi-finals Kellett beat the Peak 1 - O with Kellett scoring in the last three seconds, and Clearwater Bay also beat Bradbury. Therefore Kellett and Clearwater Bay met again in the final. At full-time the game was once again drawn but in extra time Clearwater Bay scored to deny Kellett the victory they deserved. Thanks to Miss Goddard and Neil Alton for the good coaching . Melvin Byres Our last match of the season was against West Island School (a secondary school) . We had all the Sixes playing and a few boys! It was lots of fun and to our surprise we beat them 8 - 1 ! Cristina Rosas & Emily Harris Hi, my name is Henry, I play for the school football team. We played Kennedy, we wonII Ben scored two goals, Tom scored one. That was it. We have beaten them, the score was Kellett 3 - Kennedy 0 Henry Temple } / J / St Geo,ge's Toum:~en; ' ., Saturday 10th December was a big challenge for us. We were to play in the ~ ESF/SCEA Netball Tournament against 6 different teams from all over Hong Kong . Before the Tournament everyone was training hard . For the shooters, each playtime was given up for shooting practice. Finally Saturday arrived. We met Miss Goddard at 8.30am and played our first match at 9.00am. Overall we won 4, drew 1 and lost 1. We came second in our table. We had lots of fun and want to thank Miss Goddard for all her hard work. Jennie Robertson We've had a busy season this year with lots of matches and tournaments. In our first tourn ament we reached the quarter-finals but were then knocked out. Our next tournament was St George's . We had to play Clearwater Bay, the Peak and Quarry Bay. Our hardest games were against Quarry Bay and the Peak. In both of these games we won 1 - 0. We made it to the semi -finals where we had to play Kowloon Junior. We reached full time but no goals had been scored so we went into extra time. Two minutes each way were allowed then the buzzer went into a penalty shoot-out. Unfortunately, Kowloon beat us! We enjoyed the tournament and would like to thank Mr Nevin for all his hard work in coaching us. Scott I I We did a coloured water and the bulbs sucked it and it had red shoots. Olivia The roots are drinking the water. They grow in the day and at night. Catherine The shoots grow bigger and bigger D and bigger. Some are going to flower at Chinese New Year. Jamie We put the bulbs in pots with water. The flowers look white with yellow inside. Charlotte We put water in and they grow and grow and turn into beautiful flowers. Elliot We put one in the cupboard with no sun and it went all crunchy and dried up . Harrison. We cut the mud off the bulb and gave it water and then it grows. Chelsey 43 44 The bulb drinks all the water up and flowers grow up. Theo The shoots grew long and other shoots were growing in the bulb. Shona The shoots were hiding in the bulb. We needed to put them in water. Sophie We put it on the cotton wool and watered it with red water. It grew red shoots. Simon When the flowers get out of the shoots they are pretty. Rebecca The flowers and shoots were inside the bulb. Jamie We planted the little bulbs in soil in the garden and watered them. Luke It takes a few days for the shoots to grow. We planted some little bulbs in the garden. Elysa 45 46 The flowers are yellow inside and the out flower is white. Robert We put some water on the bulb and after a long time they'd grown up. Shanzaeh One bulb didn't grow because we didn't put any water in. Emma The bulbs looked like spiders. We put water on and they grew. When it was its full size it got fatter. I became scared. What would the tiger do to me? Would he eat me up for supper? The only thing that I could do was to shut the book and hope that it would make the tiger disappear. The only problem was that the tiger was standing on the book. How would I get it off? It was about a Mandarin that kept Koong Se (his daughter) inside. But she fell in love with the secretary named Chang. I was a maid that looked after Koong Se. I was also a ribbon dancer for the festival of the marriage. I felt very .i. nervous when we did the play. I was r very impressed with everybody else's ~ ::::~~::::ndersson . I 124 The Willow Pattern Stoft.1 In our production I was a servant to a very rich man called Tso Ling. I was also doing the keyboard for a song. I was also a ribbon dancer. The story was tragic and some parts were frightening and dramatic. After the production I felt pleased and very happy but before the production I was nervous. When I got off the stage f I sung then I sat on the bench and waited until I did the ribbon dance. I was the leader of the dance. Next was the entertainment part. I just had to wave the ribbons above my head. My best part was the entertainment. After the play I didn't feel nervous anymore. I felt nervous at first but when I went on stage I wasn't nervous any more. The play was very good but we couldn't have done it without the teachers and especially Mrs Price's , help! Kayleigh Blackburn I I ,t 126 11' 1 ;f ~:d Our play was about a Chinese princess and her cruel father, the Mandarin . He kept her locked away in the garden. In the play I was a hoop dancer and a villager. I enjoyed the fire dance best, it was really exciting. Laura Robertson I was a maid and the other maids were Beverley, Alexandra and Angela. I was ' also a ribbon dancer and the others were Kayleigh, Beverley, Alexandra, Angela, Ashley, Sophie and Anna ~ Marie. No one made any mistakesl I think the best part of the play was the fire scene but it was hard to get rightl For an overall impression I would say we did pretty well and I will remember the 15th of February 1996 for the rest of my life. Sara Dannenia f~ -~ "~ .... '- The character I played was Ping Mo the chamberlain. I served Tso Ling the Mandarin but was really on Chang and Koong Se's side. I felt that we had done a good production and I was proud. I thought that the fire scene was a really good and creative way of telling the audience how dramatic and sad it was for the couple to die. In the play I was Chun Soy and I was also in the dragon dance . This story J was based on two lovers called Koong ~ Se and Chang. Koong Se's father would not allow her to marry Chang because he was poor and Koong Se was rich and beautiful. One day an ugly old man called Ta Jin arrived at the door. He wanted to marry Koong Se, but Chang saved Koong Se and ran away. Tso Ling (her father) was very, very angry and caught them and burnt their house down. But Koong Se and Chang turned into lovebirds and lived together forever. Martin Smellie ~ ~ " ~ When we did our play we had a i wonderful day. I was in the hoop dance and the dragonflies ' dance. I did very well in the play. I was also a ;_ villager and I said, "I take some juicy t oranges to offer to the gods." My costume was red and shiny, it moved . softly. My favourite part was the ~ · ribbon dance because they did very well . We performed the play for the parents, and after the concert my mummy was smiling and clapping. Beverly Cheng ~ - In the production I was a villager. I was also a fan dancer, a dragonfly and part of the fire . I thought the performance was excellent. i Alex Whitters ~ 1 -- , In the production I played a fortune , teller and I was also a dragonfly - dancer. I thought it was dramatic and tragic. At the beginning I was nervous but at the end I wanted to do the , whole thing again. The best and most enjoyable part was the fire scene. It was hard work but it was worth it. Kevin Mallen I 128 ~ ~ First of all my part was being a beggar. Then James, who was Chang, left so I became Chang. I felt very nervous at first but I calmed down. The best part was when the guard took me away and at the end of the performance. I thought the idea for the performance was excellent. I was a villager and I did martial-arts in the celebration. It was a love story about Chang who loved Koong Se but the Mandarin didn't let Koong Se marry Chang. He forced her to marry 1 Ta Jin. Chang saved Koong Se and went to live on a beautiful island. But the Mandarin found out where they were hiding and the Mandarin killed them, but the gods took pity on them and turned them into real lovebirds and they lived happily ever after. When I went on stage and saw all those people I was worried and when I said my lines I felt nervous but when it was over I was relieved . Donald Cameron - ~ - -- _ . ~ ·. . ,. Kellett Bridge Builders In November we built a model of a modern suspension bridge. We used card, paint, wood and string. We needed to use the glue gun, the saw and paintbrushes. Our bridge building company was called Kellett Bridge Builders. The bridge would cost $20,000,000. We were a bit nervous doing our presentation in front of the class. We also showed the government representatives (Mrs Sole and Mr Nevin) our bridge. We all had a good laugh when we put the truck on top of the weight, instead of putting the weight on top of the truck. We weren't as nervous for the second presentation. Even though at the end we were laughing our heads off, we thought the presentation went well but didn't think we would get the contract and we didn't. Ylva Bostrom and Charlotte Hellings Crichton, Rogers Bridge Co Ltd We thought our presentation went well. At first we were quite nervous but we soon relaxed as we got further into our talk . We were nervous because we didn't know what to expect and we had to do it in front of our class and the Government representatives. After the public presentations we had to make a folder and it had to be presented privately to Mrs Sole and Mr Nevin . We both were not really happy with our folder. We would have liked more time but in the end we were given a certificate for being the best at answering the questions that the Government representatives asked . When we got this we felt really good. Joseph Rogers and Blair Crichton 130 Bridge Constructions & Co During the first presentation we sat in a semicircle in the IT Room. When it was our turn we stood up and took everything out from under the table. Clarissa and I started talking. When we were halfway through we forgot what we were saying and everything went quiet. So we just demonstrated our logo and turned the cogs to open and close the bridge. We were relieved when we had finished . Nicola Sawyer Jenny Sophie Constructions When we did our presentation we were a little bit nervous, in fact Jenny was fiddling with the truck and Sophie kept saying under her breath, "stop it!" but we were really excited. When we were talking Sophie kept saying " probably" because she was nervous. We thought our presentation went very well but , we made a few mistakes . We didn ' t think we would win because we had a lot of hard competition. I think we could 've made our bridge a bit stronger because it barely held 500 grams. Jenny Lewis and Sophie Ignarski Beczak Best Bridges I was nervous because my bridge wasn't a bridge that you would normally see and it wasn't like my friends' bridges, but the presentation of my bridge was great and I loved it. I was more nervous for the second presentation now that I was presenting my bridge to Mrs Sole and Mr Nevin by myself When I went in it wasn't as bad as I thought, in fact it was quite good. I won the Award for the Most Innovative Idea. Alexander Beczak Lee & Nieveen Bridge Building Company Before the presentation we felt nervous and excited because we were worried if we said something wrong. We were pleased with our model of the bridge and were worried if there were any problems. We were afraid we would mess up the presentation. We made a few changes during the presentation. When we were next for the presentation the other companies who were before us said, "It's not bad." We were worried when the Judges asked us questions we could not answer, such as, "Would the reflection from the white roadway affect the driver's vision?" In the end everything was OK but we had to send a letter to the shareholders of the company saying that we didn't get the contract. Chiara Lee and Samantha Nieveen ~ --lllll!l \ = - I !!!!! T & M Associates Limited When we did our presentation we felt confident that we would win. We weren't nervous at all really. We ourselves thought it went well . The problem is we spent days and days of work and it was all over in less than an hour! Mr Nevin was there and so was Mrs Sole and as we did the presentation they wrote down notes. At the end they gave us notes in envelopes. In them they had what we should have in our folder for a further presentation. After everyone finished the folders, we handed them in and Mr Nevin and Mrs Sole decided who won. There were different awards for most categories. Thomas McDonald and Matthew Andree-Wiltens Sabai, Jessica, Bridge Builders Assn Ltd We were so excited when we went up to the Headquarters for the presentation, but before we went in we had to wait for half an hour for Nathan to finish . We were so excited but we tried to act serious. We sat down and showed our folders which we had been working hard on. The people from the Government liked our folder and our ideas for our bridge. Then the Government people asked us where we were locating our bridge. We told them that we were going to locate our bridge .icross Shek Pai Wan. The Government people said that it was a great place for a drawbridge in Hong Kong, then we discussed more about our ideas on our bridge. When we were finished we left the room. Two weeks later we got an award for the construction of our bridge and we felt very proud . Both of us remembered all our words and managed to answer all the questions given by Mr Nevin and Mrs Sole. Then 2 days after the presentation we got a letter asking us to do about 20 more pieces of work and then we would be judged. Then about a week later we did a private presentation with Mrs Sole and Mr Nevin. We were slightly nervous when we were waiting outside the door. We improvised for the Map Presentation at the end . They didn't know what was best to build, a bridge, an immersed tube or bored tunnel and they had to find out the cost of it all. In 1992 Mr Beard's company (Mott MacDonald) got the contract to build a suspension bridge. It cost $550 million to build the bridge. The bridge towers are 206 metres high and the bridge is 2.17 km long. There are 69 dee • nits with 4 suspenders on them · t e main span so there are 276 der~. He came with the Sixes when we went to see the bridges which consist of the Tsing Ma Suspension Bridge, the Kap Shui Mun Cable-stayed Bridge and the Ma Wan Viaduct. On the way out of Hong Kong Harbour he showed us some really interesting plans of the cross-section of the road. There was also a folder of photos of the bridge in progress. While we were on the boat he showed us a piece of cable and we passed it round. It was really thin. We were all very lucky to have Mr. Beard with us. When the bridge is completed it will have 94 deck units. Every five days two more deck units come to be lifted but the last deck unit will be put into place in March 1996. The very first deck unit was placed in August 1995 . The Tsing Ma Bridge will be finished in April 1997. Suspension bridges are very strong. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA is one of the worlds best known Suspension bridges. Aft~r quite a long time of planning, the engineers construct the foundations for the great big towers. Once the foundation is ready the towers are built. The great suspension bridges have towers about the same height as a 70- storey_ skyscraper and are built over a kilometre apart. When the towers are completed the laying of the cables begin. The cables are fixed to humungous anchorages at both ends of the bridge. These structures are made out of reinforced concrete which is able to stand there with the strong pull of the cables and roadway. If the anchorage fails then the bridge would collapse. The roadway is added when the towers, anchorages and cables have been co_mpleted. The roadway of a suspension bndge hangs from many cables, carried by two !Owers. ~~ctions of the roadway are put mto pos1tion and suspended from steel ropes. Cables have to be very strong to hold the roadway, in fact strong enough to withstand typhoons or hurricanes. The weight of the complete roadway would make the cables sag. The amount of sag will be calculated by the bridge designers. Chetan Ahuja 136 Arch Bridges The Romans built arch bridges out of wood and stone. Some of these bridges are still standing. One of these is the An Chi bridge built by the Chinese in about the year 600. It is 36 metres long and is still in use today. Modern arch bridges are made of steel and are able to carry cars and trains. The first cast iron bridge was built by Abraham Darby and completed in 1779, across the river Severn in Coalbrookdale, England. The Sydney Harbour bridge is the widest bridge, it is also an arch bridge. It has two railway tracks, eight traffic lanes and a foot path going across. It is 49 metres wide and completed on the 19th of March 1932. Amy Hawker The Ponte Vicchio Bridge The bridge I especially like is called the Ponte Vicchio Bridge in Italy. The Ponte Vicchio spans the River Amo in Florence, Italy. It was built in the 1300's, and there are there are still houses shops, churches, and even prisons on it today!! Ponte Vicchio is made from stones and concrete. It is very big! Saki Funayama The Tsing Ma Bridge I The Tsing Ma bridge is a double decked suspension bridge. The idea for the bridge was first thought of in 1970 unfortunately it was cancelled in 1983 fo; economic reasons. In 1989 it was re instated. The construction started in 1992 and it is expected to be finished in 1997. It has a main span of 13 3 7 metres and a main span of 315. 5 metres. The tower height is 206 metres and the road will be 80 metres above the level of the sea. Simon Beard The Rope Bridge The sun filters through the fresh leaves of the trees that surround the rushing water of the river that myself, Kate, and the rest of my class were canoeing through. Two to a canoe and my best-friend Jackie and I are in the lead paddling evenly between the ripples of the shimmering water. We come to our destination. We are freaked out by the alligators that are wading past us. We climb slowly onto the river bank our boots crunching in the mud. We wait by the water looking at our reflections, tossing our crinked hair but not admiring ourselves. The others arrive and we depart for our tiring walk. As we walk we hear screams from behind us, but we carry on ignoring them leaving them behind us. We come to ~ bridge, a rope bridge, a swinging, dangerous looking rope bridge. A streak of lightning strikes the trees behind us as a swirl of wind catches the sky causi;g a terrible storm, a storm unlike anything else in the world . A nightmare! We are separated from the rest of our class, alone, frightened, looking for an escape. The rope bridge swings from side to side as if it was saying, "I am your escape walk over me" . I am led onto the bridge, sort of hypnotised with those words swirling around my mind. "Kate, help me !" .... . ... . .. . ............ . . . .. Jennie Robertson Bridge Test Test to find the strongest shape for a bridge roadway. This is what we used:- Rulers, Scissors and Pencils, 7 pieces of card 5, 10, and 20 gram weights and two wooden blocks to support the card. This is what we did :- First we scored the card with rulers so it would be easy to fold . When we had folded all the pieces of card into different shapes to form bridge roadways. We added a extra piece of card to steady it. Then we started to test with weights. We placed each piece of card carefully on the two blocks then we slowly added weights until the card collapsed. This is what happened / result :- We found that the different shaped bridges could only be tested once because when you test it for the first time it gets creased in the middle, and weakens the structure and so it collapses much more easily. Conclusion :- The best shape was: M as it supported more weight. Daniel Cooper Crossing the Bridge Experiment to show how the weight of an object is transferred across a bridge. What We Used :- 2 scales Balsa wood 500g weights What We Did:- We put some numbers on the balsa wood to show us where to put the weights. We placed the balsa on top of the two scales then we moved the 500g weight across the wood. Results :- We found that when the weights got near one side of the scale the weight was transferred to that side but when it was moved to the other side then the other scaled showed a higher reading. Conclusion:- The weight was transferred across the bridge How we made a fair test:- We kept the wood still through the whole test. We made sure that the scale always went back to zero when the weight was removed. James Charlton Bridge Work Test to find the strongest shape to fold the card into to make a bridge roadway. What we used:- Card 60cm long, 2 Wooden Blocks, Weights of 5, 10, 20, 100 and 200g, Scissors, Rulers and Pencils What we did:- First of all we drew and folded the card into the correct shapes shown on the piece of paper we had. We then positioned the two blocks 40 centimetres apart. Then we placed one of the card shapes on top of the blocks. After that we placed the 20g weights on the card. We kept placing on another and another 20g weight on until we got to one hundred grams. Then we took the 20g weights off and placed one of the 1 00g weights on. We then went back to placing the 20g weights on. When we got to 200g we took the 20g weights off and placed a 200g weight on. We kept on doing this until the bridge collapsed. Liam Murphy Aqueducts 'Jur bridge is an Aqueduct. Aqueducts were first built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD, from huge blocks of stone. Aqueducts are designed to carry water over valleys. They can also go over flat land . The water runs through the canal on the second level of our aqueduct and people walk on the top level. Before we could build our aqueduct we had to plan it on squared paper. The pillars were made out of polystyrene and to make each pillar the right thickness we had to make each pillar out of three pieces of polystyrene, which we then had to stick together and reinforce with satay sticks. We placed a piece of wood on top of the pillars to help keep them steady and to form the decks. We then papier machied underneath the wood to give the arches their shape. We made the mountains by putting papier mache around large coke bottles. After we had finished constructing the aqueduct we had to paint it, this we did with paint mixed with glue to give it strength. Jennie Robinson, Phoebe Morgan and Cristina Rosas How We Built Our Bridge We made an arch bridge. We made it out o( blocks of balsa wood and tooth picks. First we cut the balsa wood with a wood saw. Then we glued them together with a glue gun in order of length. After that we stuck the tooth picks on with UHU glue to make a fence and put a ramp up to the road to get up. 138 Simon & Liam Civil Engineering Ltd We know everyone else made forty to fifty centimetre long bridges, but we decided to set ourselves a challenge. We built a two hundred and seventy four centimetre long bridge! In real life our bridge would be two thousand, seven hundred and forty metres long and three hundred and fifty metres high. The design and plans for it took us about one week to complete. We made our bridge out of card, balsa wood, wood, brass hooks and string. We used the glue gun, paint, spray paint, sand paper a saw and a hole borer. First we made our cables, then we made the decks which we painted and glued. Next we made the anchorages and constructed the towers. Then it was time to put the bridge together. Dictionaries came in handy at this point, we used a pile of them in the middle of the harbour for temporary support ( can you think of a better use for them?). Our bridge will carry six lanes of traffic :,n the top deck and four emergency lanes and two rail tracks on the lower deck. Simon Beard and Liam Murphy We decided to paint it red. We also decided to step the arch so it would be stronger and because it would be very hard to make it curved. There are three ?ifferent types of arch bridges, our bridge 1s a corbelled arch. Arch bridges have been around for a long time the first bridge was probably beam bridges but when arch bridges were invented bridges became longer and stronger. Amy Hawker and Emma Jonathan Bridges to the Future Dum, diddley dum dum dum, diddley dumdum, These are the builders of the C.D.B. , on a five year mission to find out new bridge types and build bridges where no man has built before. Dum, diddley dum dum dum, diddley dumdum, C.D.B. specialise in low cost Truss Girder type bridges. When building our bridge we first made the supports out of hollow wood and glued the lower deck on. Next we built and put on the upper deck complete with the trusses. It was now ready to paint! After we had painted it we added a boat house and some small yachts . Our company name C.D.B. stands for Coolly Designed Bridges, and our motto is 'Bridges to the Future' Dum, diddley dum dum dum, diddley dumdum. Oliver Witton and Nikolas Stewart To Build a Bridge Brief To build a bridge that will span a space of 40 cm and will carry a weight of I kg. Criteria. It has got to be strong. We decided it had to open and close because it is a drawbridge. Materials. Cardboard, balsa wood, string, cotton reels, paint, glue, wood, satay sticks, paper. Tools. Glue gun, saw, drill, scissors, paint brush. Stages. We put the towers in place flat on the ground. Next we made the platform onto which we stuck the two towers. Then, we stuck the cotton reels onto the top of the towers and attached the string to the platform and the cotton reels. Lastly we painted it. Changes. We changed the platform by making it out of wood instead of card. Also the cotton reels on top of the towers were moved to the side. We changed our logo and we also didn't have ramps from the bridge. Listening to the birds and animals. Here I am looking down on the clear The Bridge Of Hope. Trying to escape the pain, Runnmg away from home. Problems and misery in my brain, Which way shall I tum ? Searching for a way, To find a happier life. Getting away from my worries and strife. A sparkling bridge appears before my eyes, Shimmering in the sun Is this an escape ? Or just an illusion. A shining mirage, Gleaming above the sparkling water Gathering up my courage, I take an enormous step, Surprised to feel no threat. Leaving torment behind, I reach a peaceful land.
