From The Principal The 1998-99 Kellett School Magazine celebrates the achievements of all our pupils and the wider school community. The following pages capture a year in which pupils have excelled in all aspects of the curriculum , academic studies, the arts and sport. The 1998-99 year was one in which our pupils embarked upon at least two new ventures. In October Primary Six members of the School Band visited Kuala Lumpur, joining one hundred and twenty British International School pupils from South East Asia at The Alice Smith School , to attend the Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia Music Festival. In November Primary Three and Four pupils , working with Mrs Krieger, Mrs White and directed by Miss Goulston presented, to much acclaim , a performance based on Mary Poppins as part of The 1998 Youth Arts Festival. It has also been a year in which we have continued to celebrate many annual traditions: concerts , assemblies , family sports day, camps and extra-curricular activities. We have welcomed many visitors to our community. In October we were delighted to host Mr and Mrs Andrew Seaton , Deputy British Consul General. Former pupils have also continued to excel , Rosie Barker has been appointed Deputy Head Girl at Island School , Charlotte Waldron gained an Academic Scholarship to Cheltenham Ladies College and Tom Gibson an Art Scholarship to Charterhouse. I know as the year progresses, we will hear of many further pupil achievements. This year we welcomed Mrs Harvey as Deputy Principal and Mrs Vallar as School Business Manager, each bringing many years of senior educational management skills to Kellett. Sadly, in June we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Ennion , who has headed Key Stage One for five years. We will miss Di for both her professionalism and quite humour; she leaves with our warmest wishes for a very happy and successful future in her native New Zealand. I am delighted Mrs Anne Paterson has agreed to join the Senior Management Team as Acting Key Stage One Co-ordinator until September 2000. Two long serving Board members retired in December, Mrs Brenda Sawyer and Mr Tim Lewis. I am sure you will join me in thanking Brenda and Tim who have devoted many hours to the school. I am delighted to welcome Mr John Cribbin as the new Chairman. John has extensive knowledge of both Kellett School and Hong Kong, which I know will prove an asset in an era of continuing regional development. Kellett has continued to welcome pupils from across the globe, twenty-four nationalities studying together, reflecting the international city in which we live. Kellett prides itself on ensuring all its pupils move to future schools with increased confidence, a joy of learning, a healthy anticipation of the challenges ahead and the knowledge that they are a special and valued member of the School family. Kellett will continue to prepare pupils for the rapidly changing world in which we live. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the 1998- 99 Kellett School Magazine, pupils , parents, staff and the magazine committee for producing such a magnificent celebration of the school year for us all to enjoy and remember. Matthew Schlamm I had lots of fun being In "Supercalafragalistlc" James Lunn We had to learn lots of dances and songs which was hard work but good fun.I enjoyed the "Wind Dance" best of all. Reina Funamaya I felt very nervous at first, but when the show was over, I wanted to do it over and oVet again! Kony Oh I really enjoyed the "Step in Time Dance" and I liked being a sweep.I was a little nervous at the beginning of the show but in the middle I was ok. Michelle Brown I felt scared, excited and nervous I Jesslynn Schlamm I liked the kites.especially the colours on them. Hannah Haslam I really enjoyed learning all the songs and dances. We had to practice lots of times. My favourite was "The Wind Dance". Lauren Evans I really enjoyed being in "Supercalafragilistic" and liked watching Bert and his mates dancing. Also on this floor there is the slimy six armed monster that lives in the football castle in frol)t,..6f the gold, shiny key. Finally O.P. finds which button to press and goes to the dangerous second floor. He answers all the questions that the mean d-inosaurs give him and goes to the third floor, he feels very scared. Joshua Lee 92 A Necklace of Raindrops In this story by Joan Aiken Mr Jones helped the North Wind when he was trapped in a tree. To repay his kindness the North Wind became godfather to Mr Jones' daughter Laura, and gave her a very special necklace - a necklace of raindrops. This necklace gave Laura many magical powers- she could swim the widest rivers and wildest seas, and could stop the rain by clapping her hands. But a jealous schoolfriend steals Laura's magic necklace and Laura is heartbroken. The fish, bird and mouse however promise to help her. Here are 3-12's solutions to what happens next. So the fish, bird and mouse set off to find the necklace. A few minutes later the bird spied the necklace in Meg's pocket. He flew down and picked it out of her dress. Meg soon found out that the necklace was gone. She was furious! But Laura was happy because she had her necklace back. The bird, fish and mouse were happy also for Laura. Annemarie Tully The fish could not find it, the bird could not find it but the mouse found it in Meg's house. She took it away. Then Meg was furious! She kicked and screamed at school. She had to go to the headteacher Mrs Blood. She was very angry with Meg and sent her home. When she arrived her mother was mad and sent her to her room and locked the door. Meg decided to leave home. She packed four bags and climbed out of the window into the garden, and ran to the bus stop. The bus took her to Happy Valley and she went to live with her friend Charlotte. They lived happily together and Meg never stole again. Elysia Quinn Then the bird went to ask his brother to help him find the necklace with ten raindrops. His brother said: "OK I will help you." The Mouse went to ask his brother to help him and he said he would. Then the fish asked his brother to help him and he agreed. But they couldn't find the necklace with ten raindrops. One day passed, two days passed, three days passed and it was nearly Laura's birthday. But the fish, mouse and bird all saw Meg wearing Laura's necklace. The mouse was very angry so he ran to Meg and snatched her necklace off her. But Meg was angry too and started chasing the mouse. He ran to his hole and hid. The hole was close to Laura's house so he quickly ran to her house as fast as he could because he could hear the North Wind coming. He gave the necklace to Laura and she put it on just before her godfather came! Alvin Ng A Necklace of raindrops "I will help you by stealing," said a robber. "Thank you," said Laura. When Laura got home she went straight to her room and started to cry. When she went to school the next day she looked for the necklace but couldn't find it. When she saw Meg's hand in her pocket she said to Meg: "What's inside your pocket?" Meg said: "Nothing", and the bell rang for lunchtime. When Meg was out in the playground she tripped and the necklace flew out of her pocket. Then the kind bird caught it. After school the bird gave the necklace to the godfather who passed it on to Laura. William Pedersen So the fish checked in the sea and there was nothing but fish, clams and lobster. The bird flew over the roads and the farms but there was nothing but people and cars. The mouse checked with his brothers in all the houses. One of them had noticed that Meg was a jealous girl so they suspected her. So they went to her house and saw her wearing the necklace. Then Laura called the mouse and told him she was worried because her godfather was coming soon with the tenth raindrop and he would be angry if she had lost the necklace. So the mouse's brother rescued the necklace and gave it to Laura just in time. Alvin To The godfather was quite angry. Laura checked everyone's pocket and on everyone's body, but when she checked Meg's pocket she found it. She was so happy that she ran home, put it on and skipped back to school. Meg was very cross and the teacher was very cross with Meg. Mrs James made her go out in the corridor for one hour. Meg started to cry. It was Laura's birthday and she got the tenth raindrop on her necklace. The next day she went to school but Mrs James did not say Meg's name in the register. Laura was wondering where Meg was. Mrs. James said that Meg had moved to Australia for ever and ever. She never came back to school. Emily Hamilton 93 A Necklace of Raindrops One day passed, two days passed, three days passed, ........ one month passed. When will the fish and the bird and the mouse come back? Laura ran to the park. The fish was there, the bird was there, the mouse was there. They were all there. The fish had necklaces all over him. So had the bird and the mouse. But none of them were right! One day passed and then one of the mouse's cousins brought in the right one! Finally Laura got her necklace back. But what about Meg? She was furious, she turned red with anger and never tried to steal again for the rest of her life. Thomas Grey So the fish and his brothers went to look for the necklace but they couldn't find it. So the birds looked high and low but they could not find it. So the mice looked and looked and found some, but none with raindrops on them. The next day at school Meg was wearing the necklace. When the teacher saw this she screamed: "You naughty girl, go to the Principal this instant." So she gave the necklace back and cried. "Serves you right Meg, now say sorry." said the Principal. Then they were friends. Duncan Riddell 94 Laura prayed: "Oh Lord, please help me find my necklace, in Jesus' name, amen." The little mouse said: "I will go and search every house and then come back and tell you." "Thank you little mouse," said Laura. Little mouse scrambled off. Then she went and looked in Meg's next door neighbour's house. One of her brothers also looked in Meg's house. He climbed through the window and found himself iri · Meg's room. Then all of a sudden Meg came in. "What's that funny spot on the carpet?" said Meg. She bent down to look at the carpet and the mouse grabbed the necklace and took it off her neck and gave it back to Laura. Danielle Houghton The fish, bird and mouse looked in the rivers, woods and houses but couldn't find the necklace. But in one of the houses Meg was wearing the necklace with nine raindrops. Laura was very very sad. When Meg went home her father saw the necklace around her neck. Meg's Dad gave it to a paddler who was collecting presents for the King of Arabia. The bird saw this and flew to tell Laura. They set off in search of the King's palace ... .. .............. . Charlotte Brown So they set off to find the necklace. The mouse looked in every corner, and the bird looked everywhere and so did the fish. So on her next birthday she told her godfather what happened. Her godfather said: "On your birthday I will bring you two raindrops." Laura went to school and told her teacher the story. Her teacher found the necklace, and they all lived happily ever after. Daniella Ferrier The next day Meg forgot to take off her necklace and wore it to school. But Laura saw the necklace. She thought she would do the same thing as Meg had done. So she said to the teacher: "Meg is wearing a necklace in school." Meg smiled in a nasty way. So the teacher said: "I'll put it in my special box." At playtime Laura stole the necklace and quickly put it in her pocket. When she got home her godfather was there, but he never found out! Robyn Nicholl The next day both Meg and Laura went to school. The days were passing faster and faster and before long everything in the world could go wrong. With just two days left the millennium was already too close. It was the day of the millennium and no one had remembered the millennium bug. The main people who had forgotten about the deadly problem were the staff at NASA. Their supercomputers were not free from the millennium bug. Even though they were about to launch the Mars mission, these spaceships were powered by nuclear engines that would explode in space if they weren't fixed. "This is too much for me," screamed Blast in his loudest voice. Meanwhile, the enemy hel icopters were coming with many more bombs in store. The night of the New Year had arrived and now only 15 minutes remained. Alex Gregor P.5-15 110 ILL.NNIUM U8 The Biting Bug It was the 31 st of December 1999 and I had a brilliant day skiing apart from crashing into a metal table. Lizzie, Robert, Edward, Laura and I decided to go out and ski a bit more. We became bored about five hours later by which time it was 11 :45 p.m. It was New Year's Eve we were allowed to go down on the gondola by ourselves. We weren't worried about our parents because we knew they could ski down. I was more concerned about the millennium bug. As soon as we boarded it, the gondola took off. By the time we were halfway down it was 11 :59p.m. The gondola stopped and so did our hearts and then I noticed a huge bug crawling towards our gondola car. As we saw the door open we chucked our skis on to the snow below. Luckily, I still had a ski pole so I shoved it into the gap between the doors just before it closed. We managed to pry the doors open and plunge to the ground. Although we landed right next to the rocks, we found our skis and flew down the hill at top speed. We never forgot that New Year. Daniel Mullarkey P.5-15 The Scuttle Bug Invasion On the 31 st of December 1999 at 11 :23 we all were waiting for midnight to strike. Everyone was becoming bored and also quite thirsty. I decided to go and open the refrigerator door but when I opened it there was no Coca Cola and no Sprite. My friend Daniel and I went down to the local Wellcome supermarket. When we got there it was just about to shut but the manager asked what was bothering us. "Well , we need some drinks for the party at midnight tonight," I answered. "O.K. You can go inside as long as you're quick!" he muttered. "O.K. ," we said thankfully. Daniel ran to fetch two packs, each containing eight cans of Sprite. I went to get the Coca Cola. By the time we reached the cash register we had realised that we had not brought any money to buy the drinks. Quickly, I ran towards the opening of the store with Daniel waiting behind at the cash register. I bumped into Dan's mum who was with my brother, Trevor. They were on their way upstairs but they saved me climbing up two hundred stairs because the lift broke at midnight. Richard Henderson P.5-15 A Strange Happening Madeleine had studied her homework until she came across a sentence that said that people were becoming afraid of the year two thousand. Certain computers wouldn't know that the year two thousand had arrived. This was because there were only two digits in the counters of some old computers and perhaps they would reset back to 00. "Hmm!" she thought to herself. 'Why don't they try to stop it? Surely they are trying to make computers with at least four digits in their counters. Tomorrow after school I am going to go down to the Computer Systems Company shop." The next day she went to the Computer Company at four o'clock and asked the manager why he wasn't trying to make computers with four or more digits. "We are. It's just that all the computers we make are having their third and fourth digits removed. It happens every day. We have installed video cameras in every room and yet each day they have also been stolen like the digits. Even the police can't find the criminals," he complained. Why would they steal third and fourth digits? As things went through Madeleine's mind she thought of a solution. She hid a mini-camera in the room then went home and waited. Madeleine Booth P.5-15 Millennium Bug The day was 31 st of December 1999 and the story began on an island in the Atlantic Ocean. It had very tall buildings and many cars. There were very many people and they were scared of the millennium bug. The time was 11 :59 and the children were watching the TV and so the TV went off. The time was 12:00. There was one person who lived in a little bit of the city. There were not so many high buildings and not so many cars and he knew the power would go off at the start of the year 2000. Everyone was preparing to celebrate the new millennium, but I was just sitting on the sofa bed in the 6 star Grand Hyatt Hotel watching TV. Suddenly a thought shot through me as I glanced at the digital clock on the small table beside my king size bed. The clock told me that the date was the 31 st of December 1999 and the time was 11 :12p.m. I remembered that the millennium bug was soon going to strike the world. Reaching into my luggage I took out a rope, torch, CD$ 123 and my laptop computer. I put them all in my waterproof bag, slipped on my warmest sweatshirt, pulled on my shoes, buckled on my watch and set it for 11 :59p.m. I was now ready to take on the millennium bug. John Ng P.5-15 '" .... ~~;·~ .~.·-, ·~ •'. , ·-· ,, The Transport Bomber At 5 p.m. on December 31 st 1999 the most wicked transport thieves in the world arrived in Hong Kong. They quickly robbed many of the taxis there until it was time for Andersson - Philip Andersson - the best secret agent in the world. Andersson found out that a crystal bomb had been placed under Central Station. He knew exactly where the diamond bomb was located but he needed more time. The only way to reset the date without exploding it was to cut the red wire away from the crystal. He took the next MTR train, jumped out between two subway stations, took out a small, laser powered drill and blasted a hole three metres underground. He found the crystal with only two minutes left and began to disconnect it. Suddenly, the bomber appeared and tried to push Philip into the hole that he had made. Both men fell into it but Andersson managed to struggle out. He grabbed the crystal and with only ten seconds left, disconnected the red wire from the others. The timer stopped and just as his enemy tried to climb out there was a cave-in. He was killed instantly. Philip Andersson P.5-15 111 Millennium Bug . My mother worked in the airport but she was worried_ about something. One morning she didn't have any breakfast but just went st~a~ght to work. I kn~w that there was something going on. I switched on the telev1s1on. A reporter said that today was the start of the year 2000. He looked so serious but I _thoug~t th~t there was nothing to worry about. I listened very carefully and he s~1d t~at 1n this new year we might not have any power or food because of the millennium bug. Later the newsreader said that an aeroplane had crashed about ten minutes before. My dad came home with the newspapers and gave them to me. On the front page was the aeroplane which had crashed. Everyone had been rescued . Alice Yam P.5-15 The Skiing Bug Jesse's family walked down the Blackcom Mountain to the ski rental shop and rented four pairs of skis. They lugged them back up the mountain and into the hotel. After they had put the skis away and walked back down the mountain once more it was growing dark. They went off to a restaurant for dinner and later went midnight skiing. That night all the lifts were open and most people were celebrating the new year. Suddenly all the lifts stopped. There were shouts for help and just then Jesse remembered the millennium bug. She told her mum that she was going to bathroom but when she got there she became Super Jess! She rushed through the crowd and flew up into the air. Before anyone could blink she had everyone down safe and sound. The next day at breakfast Gavin pointed to a photo in the newspaper and stared at Jesse. "By any chance do you know who this person is who rescued the skiers?" he asked. Jesse looked down at the paper. "No I haven't a clue,". she replied. Jesslynn Schlamm P. 5-15 112 The Story of the Ugly Bug Eric grew up to be a super engineer, fixing all the satellites and their dishes that were damaged. One time he went up a mountain in India to the biggest satellite dish in the country. That one held all the communications information in the country. He moved slowly to the switch and pressed the OFF button even although it had a sign which said, "CAUTION: DO NOT SWITCH OFF" Everyone had a shock and began to shout for help. Eric was shouting too as he had just noticed that there was an enormous bug which was bigger than two large beetles. It ran towards him and he scrambled ·away as fast as he could. Eric ran faster and faster until he arrived back home and switched on his anti-bug laptop which luckily had batteries. The bug barged in as he put on his NORTON ANTI VIRUS. The creature was sucked into the laptop which Eric then quickly closed and threw into the deep, blue sea. Eric was very happy until ..... ...... . Nicholas Dearman P.5-15 Lift Accident Helen was quite scared about the millennium bug and the clock was ticking away fast. Just then a burglar crept quietly to the main door. It was wide open because the security lock had broken down and the caretaker was asleep. The burglar carried a torch which was swinging from side to side. He also had a big brown sack that hung over his shoulder. Looking out for danger, the burglar tiptoed in but didn't notice that a ruby he had stolen from another house had fallen out of his sack. He took the stairs up to the first floor which belonged to Helen's family. The door opened easily because the family were asleep and had not noticed that the lock did not work. With the torch the thief guided himself to the parents' bedroom. The burglar carefully looked in all the drawers until at last he had found $3000, six rubies, two rings, a necklace and a string of pearls. He put them all into his sack and tiptoed back down the dark corridor and though the front door which he closed quietly behind him. By mistake the burglar went into the lift instead of going down the stairs. Just as the lift doors closed, the clock in the Williams' flat struck midnight. About 570 people can travel on each ferry, either sitting on wooden benches or standing. Every 7 or 8 minutes a ferry sets off. They can travel at 12 knots. It costs $1 : 70 to travel one way in the lower deck and $2:20 in the upper deck. Some people say that the Star Ferry is the best value for money sightseeing trip in the world! Julien Richards An Indian baker and caterer called Dorabjee came to Hong Kong in the1860's. He looked over the harbour and saw that there was no public transport over to Kowloon. In the 1980's he built the first Star Ferry. It was a big success and still is today. Approximately 100,000 passengers ride on the Star Ferry each day to get to places like Tim Sha Tsui, Central, Hung Hom and North Point. The Star Ferry takes 3-5 minutes and it has a maximum speed of at 12 knots. The ferries have 2 decks and carry approximately 570 people. It now uses diesel fuel that pollutes the atmosphere. Lots of other ferries leave from the Star Ferries Pier; you can find lots of old rickshaws there too. The Star Ferry has always been very cheap but in 1965 the Star Ferry Company raised the price; there were lots of riots in the streets. Last year it celebrated its 100th birthday. Operating times are 6:30 am - 11 :30 pm. Before the MTR was built the Star Ferry was the fastest way to get to Tim Sha Tsui from Central. Siobhan Mccrohan 116 When the ferries were first built they were fuelled by coal. This would mean some very hard work for the crew and a lot of sooty smoke over the harbour. Today the ferries are fuelled by diesel. Each Star Ferry can hold about 536 people and about 100,000 people travel on the Star Ferry each day. In 1965 the Star Ferry Chairman wanted to put up the fares. Lots of people signed a petition against this and So Sam-chung went on hunger strike. Michael Henderson The Star Ferry is one of the most famous ferry lines in the world. Star Ferries are green and white boats that sail across Victoria Harbour between Hong Island and Kowloon. There are 13 Ferries in use now, they all end with star: Morning, Solar, Celestial, Northern, Lone, World, Meridian, Golden, Day, Night, Silver, Shining and Twinkling. Data Capacity: 570 people. Comfort: upper deck, medium, lower deck low. Frequency : 3-5 minutes. 7 minutes to get there. Speed : 12 knots Fuel : diesel Polluter : yes The Star Ferry goes from Central to Hung Hom, Central/ Tsim Sha Tsui and from Wan Chai. The Star Ferry is an inexpensive, pleasant way to travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. There are a dozen green and white, double-bowed vessels which can carry 580 passengers Carly Crozer The Airport Express The Airport Express has been running since 1998 and is owned by the MTR company. Trains operate from 6am to 1 am daily. The travel time to the first stop (Tsing Yi Station) is about 12 minutes. The second stop (Kowloon Station) is about 19 minutes. You can use an octopus card or buy a ticket. The railway station is very close to the arrivals hall. There is a T.V on each seat. There is a lot of luggage space. The cost for an adult single ticket is $70 and for a child $39. Camilla Nevin The Airport Express is operated by the Mass Transit Railway. It runs from Hong Kong Island to Hong Kong International Airport and makes two stops. On Hong Kong Island in Central the Airport Express has a station, the station has sliding doors that open when a train comes in letting the passengers in. Making the train must have cost $100,000,000. The Airport Express opened some time last summer. The train carries many people and is very comfortable. The Airport Express travels at 150 kph. There are blue and grey coloured trains. Morgan Ferrier Boat and Ferries Lots of Hong Kong boats have travelled many miles. Sampans are sometimes used to get around. Some quite old people have sampans. They used to use a long stick that had a flipper on. You put the stick in the water then put the sail up. Then wave the stick from side to side. Modern Sampans have a diesel engine. In Cheung Chau there are boats, a bit like a floating shop, that carry food or nets to bigger boats. It has been running since 1980. It is the fastest and most expensive in Hong Kong. There are air-conditioned, fully automated and very clean coaches. It is very efficient with trains running every few minutes. The rush hours are 8:00-9:30am and 5:30-7:00pm. Do not ride during these times! The fares range from $4 to $26 depending on how far across the harbour since 1868. It only takes 8 minutes. The tram rises up the steep hill and you get a beautiful view. The Peak Tram has been used since 1888. There are often loads of tourists and to get to the front of the Peak Tram you have to get to the front on the right hand side. It takes eight minutes to get to The Peak from the lower station. The tram runs daily until midnight a free shuttle bus runs from the Star Ferry Terminal in Central. The tram's lower terminus is open from 1 0am to 9pm on Sundays and public holidays. Francesca Duck The Peak Tram runs from Central to Victoria Peak, climbing 1,305 feet. It has been running from 1888 and is the fastest way to the top of the Peak; it takes 8 minutes from top to bottom. The cost is $14 one way and $21 both ways, for adults and $4 one way and $6 both ways for children. The lower station is opposite the American Consulate. An open top bus goes between the Star Ferry Pier and the Peak Tram station. There are four stops on Kennedy Road, May Road, McDonnell Road, and Barker Road. The top of the Peak is one of Hong Kong's best sites and attracts lots of tourists to see the wonderful view. The Peak Tram can hold 72 people. It is pulled up by a cable and does not carry fuel. The seats are quite comfortable but it can be quite crowded. Anthony Haynes 118 The construction of the Peak Tram began in 1885 and fin ished in 1888 when it started to run. In May 1888 Governor Sir William Des Voeux officially opened the stations. Back then it was called the, "Quaint funicular railway." (Funicular means simultaneously ascending and descending cars hooked together by a huge cable.) It runs 7am-12pm. It is computer controlled, with an automatic system check for safety. This safety feature prevents a big collision. 1. 1888-1926 Trams are powered by coal-fired steam engines. 2. 1926-1948. An electrically powered haulage gear system is installed. 3. 1948-1952. 62 seat, lightweight, all metal trams. 4. 1959-1989. 72 seat all aluminium introduced. 5. 1989-1999. Upgraded to microprocessor controlled electric drive system Matthew Davidson Taxis In Hong Kong there are three different sorts of Taxis. They are red on Hong Kong Island, green in the New Territories and blue on Lantau. They have padded seats but the drivers tend to drive quickly and you sometimes get shaken about. Fares start at $15 and are increased every 200 metres. You stop a taxi by putting your arm out. You can only stop taxis that have the taxi for hire sign up. They will not stop by a yellow line. There are some places where there are taxi ranks. Emily Blackbum The Peak Tram The Peak Tram is the best way to get to the top of the Peak. Originally the trains were powered by steam engines but today it's powered by electricity, and is controlled by a computer. The Peak Tram first opened in 1888. It is a funicular railway, which means that the train is pulled up the steep hill by a steel rope. The distance from the bottom to the top is 373 metres. Before the tram, sedan chairs transported rich people to the top. A sort of sedan chair is still used during charity races to make money for the Matilda Hospital once a year. The Peak Tram runs from Central to the Peak, and makes a few stops on the way. On a clear night it's a beautiful ride. You can stand up and see how far you can lean forward without falling down. You can buy your ticket from the Peak Tram office at the bottom station. Anna Poyhonen 1. The peak Tram was constructed in 1888. 2. Carrie and Nick hate Mr. Evans because he r:ipf)ed up a will which said Hepizbalii a.n Mr. Johnny can stay. As Carrie and Nick eave Wales they see the house on fire. Forty years later Carrie returns with her children and meets Hepizbah and Mr. Johnny who are living in the bumt down house. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend this book to children who are nine and over. It is a modem horror story set in Australia . The main characters are Dawn and Rory. Dawn's mother died in a bus crash. Rory wa.s in the crash to but he survived. His Dad ran 11way and left Rory with his.., mother. Dawn's father is now marring Rory's mother and Rory and Dawn hate it. Rory has some pet maggots that live in an apple man. They started eating away at the apple man 's head and growing quite big and mean. They escaped from Rory and went to Dawns gold fish and slowly sucked the bones out of it. Then they went to Rory's mouse but this time only the general sucked the bones out of it so it could get big and strong. Then they started to grow very big and fat. They are now after Dawn and Rory and they're sucking the bones out of everything in their path. They start chasing Dawn and Rory on bats, climbing on and making them fly then sucking their bones out when they want to go down. - I read this book because Fraser recommended it to me and it was a special with all six book~ in one. I would recommend this book to people from nine to e leven . The next day mum, daddy and his little sister decide to stop all his tricks, then mum, daddy and little sister said Joshua learnt his lesson. The genre of this book is adventureand it is set in the present day in some woods, one summer. The main characters are Ginger, Nat and Pat. Ginger, a girl, is the eldest and Nat and Pat are her twin brothers. Whe- Ginger and her brothers meet beasts, they have to play a g~e called 'The Beast from the Ea~t'. There are about 50 beasts and they are big, furry and blue. The main beast's name is Fie~ and Spork is his friend . Ginger was 'it' and 1f she was still 'it' when the sun had gone down she would be eaten by the beasts. The game is between Ginger and the beasts. In the end Ginger catches Spork and after a while is let go with her brothers I would recommend this to people aged 9+. R.L Stine has written all the Goosebumps books. Bronia is the youngest and loves to draw what she sees. Edek is very intelligent and helps the family survive. Ruth is the oldest and is a born teacher like her father. Jan isn't really part of the family but was found, when he was sick, and Ruth looked after him and he join the family. Ian Serraillier is the author and the genre is an adventure story. The German's were invading Poland and the children were separated from their parents. Ruth , Edek, Bronia and Jan's town, called Warsaw was turned into rubble. Jan met the children 's father who gave him the 'Silver Sword' which he found in their house. The story is in Europe. The children had an amazing journey to get to Switzerland together with 'The Silver Sword,' which they thought gave them luck. I enjoyed this book very much and it is for able eight year-olds. I recommend this book because it is an exciting and interesting story. Harry thinks that Snape is trying to get the stone because the dog bites him, but he actually isn't. The book is aimed at children of 9-11 years old. I chose this book because lots of my friends recommended it to me, and my sister also saia it was good. When Amaz-0 tries to find his rabbit it was too late and the Pirate changes Tim and Amaz-0 into rabbits. But he couldn't change Tim's sister into a rabbit because she was hiding. She told Foz what happened and they went to tell the police, but they didn't believe them. To find out how it finishes you will have to read the book for yourself. I chose this book because I like Goosebumps and I like to read books by R.L.Stine. It was very interesting and I really enjoyed reading it. Reviewer: Sammy Stoten I ( Terrible Tudors Nick Arnold The way the book has been written is unusual as it is based on fact but told as a story, mixed with humour. This is done to keep the attention of the reader. The genre ot the book is historical fact, giving us a picture of Tudor lifestyles, behaviour and what they wore. T!J.ere is information about King Henry V111, Queen Elizabeth 11 (who is said to have only taken a bath every thre-e months and was credited with being one of the cleanest Tudors), and Henry V1 . Also, we are told about Mary Queen of Scots and Lady Jane Grey who was executed in England. I learned that the Tudors were often cruel , executing people for minor crimes such as pick pocketing. Even when playing sports, it was a cruel game with no rules or referee. Players would end up with broken limbs and other parts of the body as well as bloody noses! The Tudors wore big, flamboyant clothes which were probably most uncomfortable. Men wore ... dresses for the ladies. The author has also written about the clothe~ of the time, the men wore the big collars and short tr:ousers drawn in at the knee which were stuffed with materiar to make them look even bigger. The ladies wore long wide dresses. The- way in which the book is written makes it fun to learn about history and I would recommend it for people aged ,...9-12 years old. Jenny is a really kind and nice little girl but she was too tall for her age. She is as tall as a teacher so everyone thought she was the new teacher coming to the school and this is how the trouble began. Miss Ice is a really mean and strict principal. The problem occurs when Jenny was supposed to be a student but she was mistaken for a teacher. Everyone in the school fhought she was the new teacher. I The resolution was that Miss Ice fired Jenny and Jenny met the new teacher and Jenny went back home. I recommend this book because it is an interesting and funny adventure. PIM is a computer on a Stelcorp Starship that crashed in the desert on Earth during one of its intergalactic missions. Jansi is a human scavenging in the desert when he comes across PIM. -On entering the starship, PIM kidnaps him beca_g_se he needs to get repaired and then Jansi becomes annoyed. Jansi ~ angry because he was abandoned at birth and he has never been properly looked after. He has become a nature lover by scavenging through the desert. He is also hopeful, because he is trying to find someone to look after him properly and he never gives up. PIM is smart since it has been programmed well. PIM is thoughtful because it's looking after Jansi skilfully, PIM is also optimistic because it is always looking on the bright side. ,. The problem in this story is caused by a Stelcorp rescue vessel that answered PIM's cfistress call. It comes to help them but really it wants to destroy them. Jansi pulls the switch and takes the rescuers hostage so they can't destro PIM. Anotrte- Star ship is orbiting Earth and the*crew are going to destroy PIM too. Then PIM gets a cripple code from ·one of the hostages. .. The conflict.,...occurs when PIM decides he wants to keep on flying and he and Jansi do everything they can to stop themselves from being destroyed. I am recommending this book because I really enjoyed it as I like Science Fiction and other people who like Science Fiction would pmbably enjoy this book too. All the pupils in his class and even Miss Fox and the lady who sold candies, tried to pull / him up. But Bobby was not always so bad and all the pupils got to like him. Reviewer: Celine Cheung , The White Planet Carol Maine The book I was reading is The White Planet' written by Carol Maine. The genre of the book is science fiction/adventure. The main characters are James Alistair and Gary. James Alistair and Gary are twins. James Alistair is the adventurous one, Gary's more sensible even though he can get in a lot of trouble, Other characters are Jill, Uncle David, Captain Adnris, Marcon and Merril. They are on the, Planet Ciron in the present day. The maiFI problem is that the Menads have captured James Alistair, Jill and Uncle David. The Menads are holding the Dolphin people in slavery even though it's the Dolphin people's plapet. The problem was resolved by James Alistair shutting down the brain of the city. The adventure starts when Gary went in to his Uncles garage when he was told not to and finds a space ship and goes inside and it takes off. When it came bacl(Gary was not in it so the rest of them go and try to find Gary and get into all sorts of trouble. I just chose it because it was about space. It is mostly about your body and what goes on in your body. It has funny comments and it tells you about famous scientists, what they discovered, how they became famous and when they died. The rest is about how to make Frankenstein and what you need. You will need t go to a graveyard and get the bits like legs, anns, a head, a body, heart, lungs and brain. Then you have to put them together any way you like! I chose this book because I like science and the cover is very funny and attractive.
