Description

This is a small hardbound copy of Aesop's Fables. The front and back covers have the title above and below a six-pointed star with a depiction of a bird within it. The spine reads, "Fables of Aesop," and is also decorated. A piece of paper with the phrase, "America My County," above an image of a turkey, has been adhered to the inside front cover. An inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "John James Audubon / from his/ Grandmother with her love / Dec. 25[? The five is very faint.] - 1853." This would be referring to John and Lucy's grandson named John James Audubon (1845-1893) through John Woodhouse Audubon. The title page reads: "ÆSOP'S FABLES: A New Version, Chiefly from Original Sources. By Rev. Thomas James, M.A. With more than Fifty Illustrations, Designed by John Tenniel." A very faint, likely erased, penciled inscription is on the inside of the back cover. A small pencil sketch of an owl sitting atop some brickwork is tucked in the pages.
