Description

This is an original hand-colored aquatint engraving of the "American Robin" from the Havell edition of John James Audubon's publication, The Birds of America (1827-1838). It is part number 27 and plate 131 of the print series. The print was trimmed at some point and the part number and plate number in the top marginalia are missing. The image depicts seven robins: one adult male, one adult female, and five juveniles with their nest in a branch of a chestnut oak tree. The adult male, shown feeding a worm to three of the juveniles, has a dark head, yellow bill, black streaks on its throat, and rusty orange belly. The adult female is shown holding a white egg in her bill. She is similar in color to the adult male. The juveniles are located below the adults in the nest and on the branch. They have spotting on their chests. The print is in a gilded frame with a narrow white mat that exposes the trimmed edges of the print.
