Description

This is an Amsterdam edition facsimile of Robert Havell, Jr.'s engraving of the American Robin, after original artwork by John James Audubon. The facsimiles for this edition were copied from originals in the Teyler Museum in the Netherlands. This is No. 27, Plate CXXXI. The image features an animated scene of two adult robins feeding their five offspring in the nest built in the branches of a chestnut oak. The two adults are positioned above the nest, with the male on the viewer's left and the female on the viewer's right. The male is depicted leaning towards three of the young birds, who are straining to reach the caterpillar in the male's beak. The female is holding a pink berry in its beak, away from one chick that is climbing up a branch to reach her. The fifth chick is positioned just outside the nest, to the viewer's left, directly facing the viewer. The inscription at the bottom center reads: "American Robin, / TURDUS MIGRATORIUS. / Male, 1. Female, 2. Young 3. / Chestnut oak. Quercus Prinus." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S." The engraver's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Engraved, Printed, & Coloured by R. Havell, London, 1832." The watermark for this edition, "G. Schut & Zonen R Audubon T (Both the R and T are stylized.)," is present in its entirety along the deckled edge, near the center, with partial watermarks at each corner.
