Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of Audubon's Wood Warbler by J. T. Bowen, after an engraving by Robert Havell, Jr, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was printed for the Octavo Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. This is No. 16, Pl. 77. This image features a male and female pair gripping the thin branches of a strawberry tree. The male is presented in profile, facing toward the viewer's left. This position gives the viewer the opportunity to examine its coloring, with its dark blue back and patches of yellow on the top of the head, under the chin, just below the wing, and at the base of the tail. The female, in the bottom half of the composition, is facing toward the viewer's right. Her position allows a view of the bird's underbelly. The drawer's credit, "R.T.," is included at the edge of the branch at the bottom of the composition. This credit indicates the work was done by Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). The legend, at the bottom center, reads: "Audubon's Wood Warbler. / Strawberry Tree. Euonymus Americanus. / 1. Male. 2 Female." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S.F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
