JJA.2000.4Description
This colored engraving was done by Robert Havell Jr. for John James Audubon's publication, "The Birds of America". The engraving details three different forms of Black Guillemot in an Arctic sea. The Guillemot in Winter Plumage flying over the sea has a predominantly white and bluish coat, which helps distinguish it from its dark-coated counterparts on the bottom. The young Guillemot is sitting on a rock in the lower-left corner of the image while the adult Guillemot with white-tipped wings waddles in the ocean. The snow-capped cliffs along with the light blue sky can be seen in the background behind the Guillemots. Below the image in the center is an inscription that reads: "Black Guillemot, / URIA GRYLLE. Lath / 1. Adult summer plumage. 2. Do. Winter Plumage. 3. Young." The bottom-left of the image reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon. F.R.S. / F.L.S." To the bottom-right of the image is an inscription that reads: "Engraved. Printed. & Coloured. by R. Havell,1834." At the top-right is an inscription reading: "PLATE CCCXIX." The top-left bears an inscription reading: "No 44."Artwork Details
