Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Black-shouldered Elanus by J. T. Bowen, after an engraving by Robert Havell, Jr, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was printed for the Octavo Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. This is No. 4, Pl. 16. The image features a pair of raptors. One bird grips a thin branch extending from the bottom corner at the viewer's left. This bird's body faces the viewer as it angles to the viewer's right to avoid the second raptor, which is diving downward from the upper corner at the left. A pale blue "halo" around the birds serves as a background. The drawer's credit, "R.T.," is included at the edge of the branch at the bottom corner of the composition at the viewer's left. This credit indicates the work was done by Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). The legend, at the bottom center, reads: "Black-shouldered Elanus." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S.F.L.S." The faint printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
