Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph printed by J. T. Bowen after an engraving by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon for his Birds of America. This lithograph was printed for the Octavo Edition of the Birds of America. This is No. 32, Pl. 156. This is a lithograph of the Black-throated Bunting and features the images of a male and female pair perched on the thin branches of Phalaris arundinacea and Autirrhinum Linaria. The male is positioned just above and to the viewer's right of the female. Both are presented in profile, facing to the viewer's left, in identical poses. The drawer's credit, "R. T.", at the bottom center of the image, indicates Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists, completed this work (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). Below the drawer's credit, the legend reads: "Black-throated Bunting. / 1. Male. 2. Female. / Phalaris arundinacea and Autirrhinum Linaria." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S.F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
