Description

This is a chromolithograph of the Black-Winged Hawk, printed by Julius Bien after the engraving by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon for his Birds of America. This is No. 4-2, Plate 352. This image features a male and female pair. The male is perched on a thin branch that extends upward from the bottom corner at the viewer's left across the bottom third of the page. The male is angling his body to the viewer's right, avoiding the female diving from the upper corner at the viewer's left. The male provides the viewer with a front view of the hawk, and the female's position provides a top view. A faint blue tint applied in an irregular shape provides the background. The inscription at the bottom center of the image reads: "Black-Winged Hawk. / FALCO DISPAR, Temm. / Male 1. Female 2." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York, 1860."
