JJA.2019.3.2Description
These are the images of two hawks, cut from an engraving of the Black-winged Hawk by Robert Havell, Jr., after original artwork by John James Audubon. These hawks came from No. 71, Plate 352. In a complete plate, the male hawk (in this instance labeled 2019.3.2a) is gripping a thin branch that extends from the bottom corner at the viewer's left across the bottom of the image. This bird is angling its body away from the female (2019.3.2b), which is diving towards it from the upper left. 2019.3.2a provides a view of the front of the bird and the underside of its wings. The other hawk, 2019.3.2b, depicted in a dive, has its wings tucked towards its body. This image provides a top view of the bird's plumage. 2019.3.2a has the following incomplete inscription written in pencil on the back surface: "Plate 352 / Black winged Hawk / Cut from torn plates bought [?] [section missing] (New York) and from the Havell work shop." The inscription at the bottom center of a complete plate reads: "Black-Winged Hawk, / FALCO DISPAR, Temm. / Male 1. Female 2." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left, on a complete plate, reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S."Collection
