Description

This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Blue-winged Yellow Swamp Warbler by J. T. Bowen, after an engraving by Robert Havell, Jr, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was printed for the Octavo Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. This is No.23, Pl. 111. The image features a male and female pair clinging to two disjointed branches of a cotton rose. The male is clinging to a branch with a soft pink blossom at the upper right corner of the composition, with his body angled downward to the viewer's left toward the female. The female warbler's body faces the viewer, her head tilted upwards. The drawer's credit, "R.T." is included just above the legend at the center, indicating work done by Ralph Trembly, one of Bowen's artists (Audubon Art Prints, Steiner). The legend reads: "Blue-winged Yellow Swamp Warbler. / 1. Male 2. Female / Cotton Rose. Hibiscus grandiflorus." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S.F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada."
