Description

This is a colored lithograph of the Carolina Shrew printed by J. T. Bowen, after original artwork by John James Audubon. This lithograph was published in the Imperial Folio of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America by John James Audubon and John Bachman. This is No. 15, Plate LXXV. The image depicts three small, black shrews, two males and a female, in profile and drawn to life-size. The males and female are not distinguished in the image; only the legend information indicates such. The three shrews are positioned on small mounds of dirt beside some water, with tree-covered hills in the distant background. The legend at the bottom center of the image reads: "SOREX CAROLINENSIS, Bach. / Carolina Shrew. / Males & Female. / Natural Size." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.L.S." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen. Philada. 1845."
