This is a watercolor sketch of Fort McKensie as seen from a distant hill. The fort can be seen in the center of the image with the U.S. flag waving in the wind. Nearby indian settlements can be seen on the left and right sides of the fort, surrounded by individuals going about their daily lives. All of these structures rest near the edge of the Missouri River, with a large series of mountains towering above the whole scene in the background. An inscription can be seen on the backside of the painting.
The painting also comes with its own monograph which reads: "12 versions of sketch (watercolor) of Ft. MicKenzie / Folio paper. Folded / JJA's handwriting: originally black ink / Fort mcKenzie / 6-8 miles above the Maria's river / on the Banks of the missouri, / presealed to me by Alex Calbertson Esq / who commanded at that Fort for 10 years. / August 9th 1843 / (unidentified) / Different land: blue ink. / My Grandfather John J. Audubon's writing / recieved by Florence Audubon / October 29" 1933 / Mary Bable Tyler Winters / June 26 1986."
