Description

This is a colored lithograph of the Columbia Pouched Rat printed by J. T. Bowen, after original artwork by John Woodhouse Audubon. This lithograph was published in the Imperial Folio of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America by John James Audubon and John Bachman. This is No. 21, Plate CV. The image depicts three specimens on a mound of dirt, with a river and hills in the distance. One specimen, at the viewer's left, is presented in profile. The specimen at the viewer's right is peering toward the third specimen emerging from its hole in the dirt. The bottom edge of this lithograph has been trimmed; therefore, the legend only has the following information: "GEOMYS DOUGLASSII, Richardson." The artist's credit at the bottom corner at the viewer's left reads: "Drawn from Nature by J. W. Audubon." The printer's credit at the opposite corner reads: "Lithd. Printed & Cold. By J. T. Bowen, Philada. 1846."
