This is a hand-colored lithograph of the Common Flying Squirrel by J. T. Bowen, after original artwork by John James Audubon for the Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. This is No. 6, Plate XXVIII. The image features five squirrels, two males, two females, and one juvenile, positioned around a section of tree trunk. One female is depicted leaping from the tree to the viewer's left, with a male poised on a thin branch above her, as if about to jump from the branch in pursuit. The other female, at the bottom left, is perched, in profile, on a branch extending from the trunk. The second male is clinging to the trunk across from the second female, with its head pointing downward. The one juvenile squirrel is peering out from a round opening in the trunk, near the center of the image. The legend below the image reads: "PTEROMYS VOLUCELLA, Gmel. / Common Flying Squirrel. / Natural Size. / 1,2. Males. 3.4.Females. 5, Young."
